Playoff Comment of the Year - Round One Division

Winners get streamers... - Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Back by popular demand, and inspired by the following post from one of the regular word smiths that post on Defending Big D....These are the Round One Finalists for "Playoff Comment of the Year". Enjoy.

So... Dallas' president goes on the record by calling Benn and Seguin "f—king horses—t", and clowns out with stuff like "f—k your daughter's wedding!" (you don't even have to read between the lines on that one) - and I'm supposed to trust this organization's judgment on how prospects earn playing time, and evaluate players? LOL

I have attempted to add the original post that the "Comment of the Year" was replying to in order to give context. David and Robert are automatically dq'd for obvious reasons.

Unofficial Scoreboard:

Funny that you mentioned(sic) Julius

I was wondering how he would look in the Leafs jersey and in their system.

Exactly, BaylorBear95. It's the inconsistency that is so infuriating.

This league wants to grow the game by making it fast and fun which has been a good trend. Then in the playoffs, during the only time non-hockey fans even consider turning their TV on, the NHL reverts to the same BS old-school traditions. They let the refs dictate how a game will be played based "flow" and "feel" instead of enforcing the rules that have made the game more attractive.
.
The non calls for interference are a joke. The diving needs to go. The officiating based on circumstance and score needs to go. It's the same damn thing every year. It's the reason neanderthal, non-skilled, POS players make differences in the playoffs every year.
.
Emotions are ramped in the playoffs and sometimes fans see things other than what happened like on the clean, non-predatory hit Boyle threw on Dickinson. It was against a player on your team. Too bad. It was well within the rules at the slowest of replays and not targetting. Yeah, Boyle might be a dick. But he's not dirty. Fandom might make some see it differently. That's cool and understandable. But anyone who cheers the Hatcher hit that broke Roenick's jaw in 57 different places and laments a clean hit on Dickinson might be playing into the NHL's trope of 'that's how playoff hockey is decided'. The refs are stuck in a shit position where they are told to do one thing and then ‘seasoned' to do another.
.
I watched (and rewound four times) a play last night during the third period where Tom Wilson took an 8 (eight!!!) stride run at Jacob Slavin, in a one goal game, while the much taller Wilson kept his shoulder as high as he could the whole time with no intent to lessen impact.
.
Slavin dodged it last minute and, on the league's premier national telecast, Pierre Maguire yelled something along the lines of , ‘Whoa, Wilson almost KO'd Slavin in the corner there, heh.‘, like it would have been a highlight.
.
Imagine never having seen an NHL game, turning it on with a friend who likes hockey and then trying to understand the rules as they are called in the playoffs.
.
Meanwhile, diehard fans of the game like us wonder why this amazing sport doesn't grow further into mainstream popularity.

.
A stray observation on the Stars PK giving up less shots in the slot with Polak on the ice: "They also see way more shots in both circles, which is great if the bar is set at 'keep shots to the outside of the perineum'." - David Castillo

Just an opinion but the name Legion of Doom is too legendary to be trifled with.

The name of that Flyers line was the perfect fit for their haymaking and playmaking style and there will never be another quite like it.

However, a fitting homage to Montgomery which might better fit our top line, and brought up by somebody else here, is the Legion of Boom. Somebody here also suggested the Legion of Zoom for the second line. Those two names seem apropos of everything.

The Stars third line makes opposing players really sad because they are hard to score against and you never know who's going to be on the fourth line.

Line 1: The Legion of Boom
Line 2: The Legion of Zoom
Line 3: The Legion of Gloom
Line 4: The Legion of Whom

This post is directed at all of you

...experts on this fan blog who feel it necessary to harsh my mellow with your insistence that your view is the only possible correct view about (insert player name). It's started to reach FaceBook levels of bitterness and I'm tired of it. ALL of you know the five or six posters I'm talking about. You EACH can't just let go of the position you're taking...to the point of hijacking the comment section with endless threads of "You're wrong! You're position is stupid!"

NONE IF YOU IS AN EXPERT OR WORK FOR AN NHL FRANCHISE (to the best of my knowledge). Lighten the heck up and let the rest of us enjoy this flow that the Stars (the team we are ALL rooting for) are rocking right now.

(Steps right the fuck off his soapbox)

Thanks for your attention. You may now resume your (insert adjective) squabbling.

Have you ever seen a sequel that you knew was goimg to be cringeworthy but you couldn't look away?

One that makes you groan and roll your eyes in disgust because it was just a terrible concept right from the drop?

Well, this comment is exactly that because of insomnia. So, unless you liked Transformers 3 through 16, look away and save your popcorn money for Monday night's Stars game.

On the topic of ‘oom':

The Legion of Fume is the nickname the front office staff have for the foul-mouthed Jim Lites and the seething Tom Gagliardi.

The new coaching staff seems to be flowering at the right time and are looking to become The Legion of Bloom.

There are players locked on the bench who may not see the light of day again this year. The Legion of Tomb will instead eat nachos for eternity.

The Stars goalies have been sweeping away shots with such ease this year, they look like The Legion of Broom. (There's only so many words that rhyme with vroom, people.)

The young, talented prospects coming up are going to be seasoned in the minor leagues by Jim Nill for another 4 to 12 years before allowed to play an NHL game. They are The Legion of Groom.

Look, it's not my fault. I told you to skip past this whole comment.

I'll just let myself out of this region of the room.

I thought Bishop would've been hurt by effectively platooning with Dobby

But this is an interesting year for the Vezina in that none of the finalists were remotely workhorses for their teams. Bishop actually has an edge on Lehner in minutes played, and even Vaz isn't in the top 12 in starts. I suspect Vaz will win it but it should really come down to Bishop or Lehner. The only edge Vaz has on them is wins, really, and with the goal support he got, all he had to do for a W was not allow 4 goals. Looking at the rate stats and some of hockey-reference's fancy-ish stats (which I never see mentioned anywhere else, so I take their utility with a grain of salt) I kinda think Bishop has the best argument.

Sv%:
Bishop .934 (led league)
Lehner .930 (2nd in league)
Vaz .925 (t-5th)

Team's goals for (total, so not exactly each goalie's actual goal supprt, but close enough):
Tampa: 319
League Avg: 244
Isles: 223
Stars: 209

Quality Starts and QS% (starts in which goalie's Sv% is greater than/equal to league avg Sv%;
>.600 good, <.500 bad, league avg = .53):
Bishop: 31, .689 (Led league)
Vaz: 34, .642 (5th)
Lehner: 26, .605 (13th)

Really Bad Starts (starts with Sv% <.850):
Bishop: 1 (Talk about consistency. That's pretty damn impressive)
Lehner: 4
Vaz: 7 (!)

Goals Saved Above Average (uses four variables to approximate how many goals the goalie prevented: sv%, shots faced, league avg sv%, & league avg shots faced):
Bishop: 32.24 (led the league)
Vaz: 26.40 (2nd in league)
Lehner: 26.24 (3rd in league)

GA%- (goals allowed % relative to league avg goals allowed , whatever that means, normalized to 100 so that 100 is exactly average and 0 means your Sv was 1.000, presumably 85 means you were 15% better than average):
Bishop: 73 (led league)
Lehner: 78 (2nd in league)
Vaz: 83 (8th)
