What’s up with the Dallas Stars and their alternate captains? Do the vanishing A’s mean anything ominous?

It’s one of many questions Sean Shapiro takes on in his latest Stars mailbag at The Athletic:

The Stars haven’t officially stripped anyone of the alternate captaincy, but they’ve stopped rotating the “As” between John Klingberg, Tyler Seguin, Alexander Radulov, and Jason Spezza. Seguin and Klingberg have worn them since the All-Star break.

Montgomery said the move was meant to create a more consistent leadership group, and that Seguin and Klingberg have earned those letters. He also said Radulov and Spezza are still able to lead in their own way.

Sean also discusses some possible moves for the trade deadline:

I believe the Stars will do something before the deadline. The size of the fish they land will be determined by the market, and I feel at this point we are in a bit of a league-wide waiting game. There are many buyers and not enough sellers.

Gustav Nyquist would fit well in Dallas, and there are connections that could help make a deal happen.

One player who’s unlikely to be part of any deal is a backup goalie:

Anton Khudobin is pretty close to untouchable in my mind. Think about where this Stars team would be without him.

There’s much more under the paywall. [The Athletic DFW]

A note from Sean’s latest mailbag has prompted this request:

He’s also posted a great review of the Mom’s Trip, including these selections from an overflowing cup of quotes.

Denis Gurianov in, Ben Bishop out: some lineup notes for tonight.

Here’s what Jim Montgomery wants from the Victory Green Gang tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Saad Yousuf covers both the Stars and the Dallas Mavericks for The Athletic, which means he gets to cover both Miro Heiskanen and Luka Dončić.

Around The League(s)

It looks as if Tyler gets all the #MDK action again, because the Central Division rode the pine en masse again last night. Nobody plays back-to-backs anymore...?

But here’s what else to expect tonight in #Death:

Your daily trade-deadline talk continues with Dan Rosen’s new mailbag, in which he examines scenarios for Mark Stone, the Minnesota Wild and more. [NHL]

Will the Detroit Red Wings target Julius Honka for their rebuild? Like Oliver Kylington, “[he] fits right in age-wise with the current young defensive core blossoming in Detroit.”

Not just an all-time NHL great, Jarome Iginla holds a particularly significant place in Canadian sport. Sportsnet examines his career with the help of close friend Craig Conroy.

Also at Sportsnet: Roberto Luongo’s ties to Florida have only deepened since the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shootings. A year later, Ryan Dixon writes a long catch-up with Lu.

Greetings From Scenic Cedar Park

Joel L’Esperance is hot like fire, and the Texas Stars are feeling it.

They’ve also put together another awesome giveaway for Pink in the Rink. This year’s breast cancer-awareness game takes place this Saturday.

Happy Valentine’s Day, however you celebrate it. Enjoy.
