Stephen Johns, Marty Turco Played Sled Hockey For A Good Cause In Advance Of Training Camp Opening This Week

The current and former Dallas Stars brought some of the fun in a game meant to raise funds for a good cause.

On Saturday September 8th, current Dallas Stars defenseman Stephen Johns and legendary alumnus goaltender Marty Turco participated in the annual sled hockey charity game hosted by the Dallas Sled Stars, the Southwest Wheelchair Athletic Association, and the Dallas Stars Foundation.

Each year, the SWAA, Dallas Sled Stars, and Dallas Stars Foundation hold a sled hockey charity game against the Texas Sled Hockey team to raise awareness and funds for the new season.

The game was spirited, full of laughs and fun, with both Johns and Turco scoring a goal a piece and an assist or two in the Dallas Sled Stars’ 4-2 win over Texas Sled Hockey. While this year’s event was a little more low key compared to last year, it was no less important in raising awareness and funds for the local disabled hockey community.

A post-game meet and greet included some of the local youth sled hockey kids and Stars fans, who were treated to a tour of the Stars Alumni facilities and the Texas Hockey History Museum located at the Star Center Farmers Branch rink and then spent time one-on-one with Johns and Turco.

The Dallas Sled Stars also have a few stars of their own, with team captain Taylor Lipsett and Tamar Burr. Lipsett is a 3-time Paralympic medalist (two gold and one bronze) and 2-time World Champion in para ice hockey. Lipsett also joined the NBCSN broadcast and helped cover and commentate the sled hockey games at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympics. Burr was one of the first women from Texas to be named to the women’s sled hockey team for the 2018 paralympics. Although she didn’t make the final squad, Burr is already training hard with the goal to make the team next season.

Johns and Turco had a blast, and while neither had tried sled hockey before, both were eager to get on the ice and help their team to victory.
