Jamie Benn will compete against Corey Perry, Joe Pavelski and Patrick Kane in the West and John Tavares, Patrice Bergeron, Claude Giroux and Evgeni Malkin in the East to see who is the most accurate shooter. Benn won the event at his last All-Star game appearance, with four goals hit on five shots.
The hardest shot competition is where you will find Tyler Seguin, which is surprising if only because I would have thought for sure he would have been in the fastest skater competition. He's got a wicked blast off the circle, so maybe that's what his inclusion in this event is based off of. He'll have to beat out Dustin Byfuglien, John Scott and Shea Weber from the West and Aaron Ekblad, Evgeni Malkin, Steven Stamkos and P.K. Subban from the East if he wants to win this one. We wish him good luck with all that, because I'm pretty certain this event should be called the "Shea Weber Shot Contest", am I right?
Both Seguin and Benn will compete for the West in the relay competition, with Benn getting a chance to hit the tiniest little nets in the mini-net passer spot and Seguin getting the opportunity to showcase his sick stickhandling skills. They'll be on relay team two for the West.
Benn will be in round two of the Discover NHL Shootout, with Seguin in round three. Hopefully Benn has something creative up his sleeve better than the lame attempts we've seen in recent memory from him. Remember when he used to loop far out and come in hot to beat every goaltender and score? That was fun. The slow play/stick handle/whatever the hell that was attempts he's shown the last season or two? Not as much fun.
Fun fact about the shootout competition: the first and third shooters for each team are deemed the "Discover" shooters and count for two points. If they go in the order of the released shooters in the competition, both Seguin and Benn (third respectively for each of their rounds) would be considered Discover shooters. No pressure, guys.
