There are a couple of newsy items out there this afternoon as we wind down the work week, and the first one didn't look good at first. Cody Eakin, struck by Colton Orr of the Toronto Maple Leafs last night early in the third period, was not on the ice for practice this morning, per Mark Stepneski with the Dallas Stars:
Cody Eakin not on the ice this morning. Shawn Horcoff and Rich Peverley not out there either. Dustin Jeffrey is still here.

But then later this from Mike Heika:
Cody Eakin did not skate today, but Lindy Ruff said he expects him to play Saturday vs. Pittsburgh. Dustin Jeffrey is still here. Will stay.

So it appears as though the center situation will remain stable, or as stable is it was.
Shawn Horcoff and Rich Peverley weren't out there either, but those were maintenance days, and the lineup should remain unchanged for Pittsburgh Saturday night.
The Stars expect Dustin Jeffrey to remain with the club for the time being, though he cleared waivers yesterday. There is some confusion on whether or not he'll be eligible to play in Cedar Park during the Olympic break due to possibly already having "earned" and Olympic break at the NHL level. We'll verify that soon.
Then there was this other bit of news out in the Pacific. Remember those guys?
#SJSharks sign Thornton and Marleau to three-year extensions. Cap hit for 19 is $6.75M; cap hit for 12 is $6.6M.

You could choose to look at it this way: Why won't San Jose just go ahead and die and decline already?
There's also this way:
The 2014 UFA market just got thinner. Vanek, Jagr, J. Jokinen, Stastny and Vrbata are top five scorers on the list. http://t.co/6AMhYGz5xy

Vrbata isn't going anywhere. Five years from now my then nine year-old daughter will ask me what free agency was. The trade market will be the only thin offer of hope where immediate improvement lies come June.
