Dallas Stars Roster Analysis: Kari Lehtonen Struggles, Alex Chiasson Goal Drought Continues

The goaltender, who has stolen plenty of games for the Stars over the course of the first half of the season, came back down to earth with poor defensive play in front of him.

In this weekly feature, I look at where individuals are trending to in this handy-dandy table format. The analysis of each person is done solely by me and my observations -- sometimes I do it by committee with other writers, but I've got the ultimate say. So if you disagree on any of these, feel free to tell me in the comments! Who doesn't like a good ol' hockey debate?

So I go down for the week with the flu and the Dallas Stars tack on three more losses to hit their losing streak at four games (and counting?) How fun....

Jamie BENN

Comments: Jamie Benn hasn't been leaking goals against on the team as much as others, and the captain was named to the Canadian Olympic roster.

Jordie BENN
3gp, 0-0-0, Even

Comments: Jordie Benn has been putting his team at a disadvantage with some penalty minutes over the course of the last week. While that may not be a big deal normally, the penalty kill hasn't looked that steady so now isn't the time to be doing the conga to the penalty box.

3gp, 0-1-1, -3

Comments: Alex Chiasson continues his goal drought, but it's not for lack of looks lately. He's putting up consistent shots on net over the past week but nothing's going in.

3gp, 1-0-1, -4

Comments: Erik Cole can't seem to keep the pucks from going in when he's on the ice. He isn't on a hot streak of goal scoring to outweigh that trend, either.

3gp, 0-0-0, -3

Comments: The Kevin Connauton and Cameron Gaunce pairing was exposed a lot defensively during this stretch of bad games.

Trevor DALEY
2gp, 0-0-0, Even

Comments: Trevor Daley returned to the lineup and has looked energized.

Brenden DILLON
3gp, 0-0-0, -4

Comments: Brenden Dillon regressed defensively last week - along with the rest of the team.

3gp, 0-0-0, -2

Comments: Cody Eakin will do something really well defensively, and then negates it with an ill-timed turnover.

1gp, 0-1-0, 3.00 GAA, .769 SV%

Comments: Dan Ellis allowed three goals on 13 shots before being pulled in his only outing since December 17th.

3gp, 0-0-0, -1

Comments: Vernon Fiddler continues to be a faceoff specialist and penalty killer, but that penalty killing was mediocre last week.

3gp, 0-0-0, -1

Comments: Ryan Garbutt seemed to be in danger of earning a healthy scratch after some poorly timed penalties versus the Islanders.

3gp, 0-0-0, -2

Comments: Alex Goligoski has looked ok this week, but he's only one dude back there and can't pull along the whole defensive corps.

2gp, 0-0-0, -2

Comments: Sergei Gonchar returned from IR as well, and while he's looked good since coming back, his noticeable lack of power play points is starting to become glaring after over half the season has passed.

3gp, 1-0-1, -1

Comments: Shawn Horcoff got rewarded for his improved play recently with his fifth goal of the season.

1gp, 0-0-0, -1

Comments: Dustin Jeffrey would have had one killer offensive chance had the pass made it to him last night, but outside of that he wasn't very noticeable - which can be a good thing. He's struggling to stick in the lineup when the forwards are healthy, though.

3gp, 0-2-0, 3.33 GAA, .888 SV%

Comments: Kari Lehtonen needs you to never leave, Mike Valley...his numbers this week were pedestrian, but not all of it is his fault - the team in front wasn't helping much either.

3gp, 1-0-1, -2

Comments: Valeri Nichushkin continues to hang onto the puck for long periods of time, but when a team collapses around him defensively (New Jersey) he struggles to get his game going. He made the Russian Olympic team at just 18 years old, so he'll get a bump for that this week. Way to go, baby Russian!

3gp, 0-3-3, -3

Comments: Rich Peverley is now tied for 5th overall on the team in points and is 3rd on the team in assists. He's doing it very stealthily, but he's climbing that board quick.

Stephane ROBIDAS

Comments: Still sending all the good wishes for a speedy recovery to Stephane Robidas. He's the only one left on IR now! He's reportedly targeting a return date sometime in March.

Aaron ROME
1gp, 0-0-0, -1

Comments: Aaron Rome was out for two games this week. He'll return to the lineup tonight.

2gp, 0-0-0, -1

Comments: Antoine Roussel found himself healthy scratched after a few too many ill-timed penalties recently. He'll get back in tonight, let's hope he provides a good spark of energy.

3gp, 0-0-0, -1

Comments: Tyler Seguin hasn't registered a point in three straight games. I'm not sure he's 100% over that flu/bug thing that's been going around the locker room - there are times he's turned on the jets but at other times he's looked a step off his normal pace out there.

3gp, 0-1-1, -1

Comments: Ray Whitney has to bury some of these looks he's getting, but the puck keeps getting fouled up in his stick or he's hesitating just a moment too long before his opportunity closes.
