Some big news from the mothership this Wednesday afternoon, as the Dallas Stars have announced sweater numbers for new players and some changes for some others.
We've known that Tyler Seguin would be wearing No. 91 with the Stars and that Shawn Horcoff was taking up the mantle of No. 10, and today we learn that Rich Peverley will wearing No. 17 and that Dan Ellis will wearing No. 30. Peverley going to 17 instead of keeping his traditional No. 49 -- going along with something we'd heard about the Stars trying to get away from numbers in the 40's, 50's and 60's and 70's.
Sergei Gonchar getting to keep No. 55 isn't very surprising, however, as he's a grizzled veteran and a Hall of Fame candidate and highly respected in the NHL. What's more interesting is that rookie Valeri Nichushkin will be allowed to wear No. 43 -- the number he wore playing in the KHL last season.
Other changes to note: Jamie Oleksiak (43 to 5), Ryan Garbutt (40 to 16), Antoine Roussel (60 to 21) and Jordie Benn (58 to 24) will all be changing sweater numbers this season. It could be the changes go in line with what we've heard, or perhaps these are four players being handed more "permanent" numbers with the franchise. Garbutt going to 16 makes sense, as does Oleksiak to 5, but it's going to be interesting to see how Roussel taking up 21 so quickly after Eriksson was traded will be interesting.
I'm guessing the fans won't mind it all that much.
What do you guys think about the new sweater numbers?
