Dallas Stars Roster Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin Making Case For Calder Trophy Consideration

Also: Jamie Benn loves playing the Los Angeles Kings.

Thearon W. Henderson

In this weekly feature, I look at where individuals are trending to in this handy-dandy table format. The analysis of each person is done solely by me and my observations -- sometimes I do it by committee with other writers, but I've got the ultimate say. So if you disagree on any of these, feel free to tell me in the comments! Who doesn't like a good ol' hockey debate?

The Dallas Stars played two road games before the Christmas break. We look at those performances in this week's roster analysis.

Jamie BENN
2gp, 1-2-3, +1

Comments: Jamie Benn has over a point-per-game pace against the Los Angeles Kings. Too bad the Stars don't meet them in divisional play anymore.

Jordie BENN
2gp, 0-0-0, +2

Comments: Jordie Benn had a solid two games last week.

1gp, 0-1-1, +1

Comments: Alex Chiasson earned another assist to add to his point total, even though the goals have dried up for him lately. He was out of the lineup versus the Kings due to flu.

2gp, 0-0-0, -2

Comments: Erik Cole doesn't match up well against those bigger west coast teams, I think.

2gp, 0-0-0, +2

Comments: Kevin Connauton has been a part of a good transition game for the Stars this last week. His offensive mindedness has him with some pinches down deep in the offensive zone, and the forwards coming back to cover his point on the blueline has helped to ensure that hasn't backfired on him too often -- yet.

Trevor DALEY

Comments: Trevor Daley remains on IR with a high ankle sprain.

Brenden DILLON
2gp, 0-0-0, -1

Comments: Brenden Dillon getting hit and possibly being hurt may have caused the biggest heart attack for Stars fans this season. On a line that's already decimated by injuries, one thing that is definitely not needed is for the second-most veteran non-injured defenseman to go out of the lineup.

2gp, 1-0-1, +2

Comments: Cody Eakin had two really strong faceoff nights, and that goal he scored versus the Kings was setup beautifully -- good thing he connected on that one.

Comments: Dan Ellis didn't get into the lineup with only two road games on the docket, but his recent play on home ice most likely means he'll get a look in goal over the five game homestand.

2gp, 0-0-0, +2

Comments: Vernon Fiddler did really well on faceoffs, and his specialty of penalty killing kept both teams from capitalizing on the man advantage.

2gp, 0-1-1, +1

Comments: Ryan Garbutt had a hell of a setup for Eakin's goal.

Cameron GAUNCE
2gp, 0-0-0, +1

Comments: Cameron Gaunce is another guy who has helped with a good transition game this week. He even took some time killing penalties and didn't look out of place in that situation.

2gp, 0-1-1, -1

Comments: Alex Goligoski hit a season high with nearly 32 minutes played versus San Jose. He's looking a lot more dialed in with the bigger minutes placed on him due to injury.

Comments: Sergei Gonchar was out with concussion-like symptoms this past week. Hopefully he returns to the lineup soon.

2gp, 1-1-2, +2

Comments: Shawn Horcoff is settling in nicely, and it's always a good day when you can score a goal without actually putting the puck in the net.

Comments: Dustin Jeffrey seems to be the odd guy out with Colton Sceviour's outstanding play.

2gp, 1-0-1, 2.00 GAA, .944 SV%

Comments: Kari Lehtonen has looked much more like himself these last few games. Hopefully he's back to the form Stars fans are used to seeing from him in net.

2gp, 1-0-1, +1

Comments: #ImValNichushkin was comedy gold as he wished all Stars fans a happy holidays in his native language. With his goal this week, Valeri Nichushkin moves up to 7th in rookie scoring with 19 points, and has the second best plus/minus of all rookies.

2gp, 0-0-0, -3

Comments: Rich Peverley was on the ice for a good portion of the goals against this week.

Stephane ROBIDAS

Comments: Still sending all the good wishes for a speedy recovery to Stephane Robidas. Anybody else getting tired of the IR button...?

Aaron ROME

Comments: Aaron Rome remained out last week with a lower-body injury.

2gp, 1-0-1, +1

Comments: Antoine Roussel continues to help with depth scoring. Also, I'm not sure what he says out on the ice but there are some people who just really don't like him -- and that's just fine by me.

2gp, 0-0-0, -2

Comments: Colton Sceviour had quite a good run in his first few games after being called up. He's had a couple of quality chances this week, but just couldn't finish them.

2gp, 1-1-2, +1

Comments: As goes Tyler Seguin so do the Stars go. When his line is clicking, this team is pretty hard to beat.

2gp, 1-0-1, +2

Comments: Ray Whitney got his groove back.
