Sidney Crosby was looking for a fight and the Dallas Stars' Matt Niskanen obliged in what is sure to be (at least part of) the talk of the hockey world in the next news cycle or two.
It was 4-1 Stars at the time and Brenden Morrow had just fought Kris Letang. Crosby, either in a fit of white hot rage or an attempt to get his club fired up decided to take on the small Stars defenseman. Art said earlier tonight that Niskanen has never technically "fought" in his NHL career. We'll have to check on that, but he was definitely the smallest guy on the ice at the time for the Stars, and according to Matt Niskanen's comments on the post game show, that fact was not lost on him.
This is burying the lead of course, because the guy the Penguins were mad at all night was Jamie Benn, for some reason, who twirled twice against the Pens.
"I never saw that coming. We were up 4-1 and he was probably trying to get the team going. He asked me to go and we went," Niskanen said after the Stars defeated the Penguins 5-2 at American Airlines Center. "I didn’t say a word to him all night. I wasn’t on the ice with him all night. I made sure he really wanted it and we went. It happens."
You can see the results for yourself here. The only result that matter is on the scoreboard. A 5-2 Dallas Stars win.
