2009 NHL Playoffs: Defending Big D makes their picks

NHL Playoffs Blog Coverage, Schedule and Scores - SB Nation

With the 2009 NHL playoffs kicking off tonight, we continue our coverage by submitting our picks for each series. Throughout the playoffs, we'll track our progress and submit new picks for each round. It should be interesting to see which of us comes the closest in the end.

Follow the jump for our complete picks for each round.

Western Conference First Round

vs.

#1 San Jose Sharks Vs. #8 Anaheim Ducks
Fear the Fin | Battle of California (with extra Chen!)

Brandon: This should be a pretty exciting series to watch, although I don't think the Ducks have the personnel to keep up with San Jose. Sharks in six.

Gravypan: Sharks in 5 because they've got goaltending and special teams. Something the Ducks don't have going for them right now.

Derek: Sharks in 6

vs.

#2 Detroit Red Wings Vs. #7 Columbus Blue Jackets
Winging it in Motown | Uhh...Mirtle's working on that I think (link goes to Official Site)

Brandon: My upset special: Detroit has goaltending issues and Columbus has Steve Mason. Blue Jackets in seven.

Gravypan: Red Wings in 6 because of the experience factor. Though like I wrote in my preview, I do think Columbus will give Detroit problems.

Derek: Wings in 7

vs.

#3 Vancouver Canucks Vs. #6 St. Louis Blues
Nucks Misconduct | St. Louis Game Time

Brandon: St. Louis is a great story this season, and has a lot of momentum heading into the playoffs. Blues in six.

Gravypan: Canucks in 7 because GM Place will be the site for yet another potential Game 7. But I wouldn't be shocked if St. Louis wins this series.

Derek B: Canucks in 5

vs.

#4 Chicago Blackhawks Vs. #5 Calgary Flames
Second City Hockey | Matchsticks and Gasoline

Brandon: Now this will be a great, high energy series and one that I look forward to watching closely. Hawks in six.

Gravypan: Blackhawks in 5 because...(cue lyrics to Hey There, Delilah)

Derek: Hawks in 6

Eastern Conference First Round

vs.

#1 Boston Bruins Vs. #8 Montreal Canadiens
Stanley Cup of Chowder | Habs Eyes on the Prize

Brandon: Boston has everything going for them: great goaltending, good scoring and great defense. The Habs barely got in. Bruins in five.

Gravypan: Bruins in 6 despite my growing dislike of them. Which is odd since I love the Red Sox.

Derek: Bruins in 6

vs.

#2 Washington Capitals Vs. #7 New York Rangers
Japer's Rink | Blueshirt Banter

Brandon: This should be another great series to watch. Alex Ovechkin up against the recharged Rangers and Sean Avery. Capitals in six.

Gravypan: Rangers in 7 despite my lifelong hatred of them. I think it'll come down to goaltending. Advantage, Joel's twin brother.

Derek: Caps in 6

vs.

#3 New Jersey Devils Vs. #6 Carolina Hurricanes
In Lou We Trust | Canes Country

Brandon: This is a totally irrational pick: I love Jamie Langenbrunner and can't express how much it pains me to see him playing for the Devils. I hate Martin Brodeur. Canes in seven.

Gravypan: Hurricanes in 7 despite my dislike...oh who am I kidding, I don't dislike the Devils. But I do think their due for another first round exit just because.

Derek: Canes in 6

vs.

#4 Pittsburgh Penguins Vs. #5 Philadelphia Flyers
Pensburgh | Broad Street Hockey

Brandon: Best East conference matchup. The Flyers have scoring, physicality and finally look ready to contend. Standing in their way is a Penguin team desperate to get back to the Finals. Flyers in seven.

Gravypan: Pens in 6 despite my loathing of Sidney Crosby. Or as a certain Red Wing's blogger calls him, Gary's Baby Boy. Still, the guy's got talent and the Pens have been on quite a roll since dumping Therien.

Derek: Pens in 7
