I'll be giving a full, very lengthy breakdown of this past season tomorrow but first I wanted to share some thoughts on the past month, and what you can expect from us here at Defending Big D in the coming weeks and months.
If nothing else, you have to admire this team's refusal to ever give up. This has been the most frustrating Stars season I have ever had to go through, but in the end I don't think I have ever been prouder of the guys on this team. These guys battled until the very end and you could just see the air go out of the sails midway through February. While there were some clunkers along the way, I don't think you could say this season was a failure due to lack of effort.
Steve Ott, depressed and downtrodden the past few weeks over not making the playoffs, came alive in the final game of the season. He has fueld this team emotionally all season long in lieu of Brenden Morrow and it was great to see him get the final goal of the season, 13 seconds from a regulation loss. He also had one of his signature moments last night at the start of the third period, and it is now available for viewing in all it's You Tube glory.
What a great, poignant way to end the final broadcast by Ralph Strangis and Darryl Reaugh. It was heartfelt, honest and completely unscripted. These guys are some of the best announcers in all of sports and while they are brutally honest at times, there is no doubting that they have a special connection with the team and players they cover.
The media will meet with the team for the last time this season Monday. Most of the players (like Mike Modano) are going to hit the beaches and just relax and heal. I expect this team to be right back on top next year and hungrier than ever, especially with Morrow returning. There will be a few Dallas Stars playing in the World Championships this summer, and a few will be going back down to the AHL to play in the playoffs there.
