"From my standpoint, I've wanted him to know all along how I feel about him, how I feel he's important to our team's success and how he is a Dallas Star through and through. We talk about those things and he wants to be a Dallas Star. Obviously, the agent is trying to maximize what is best for Steve. That's the way it's gone. It's gone back and forth a little bit. I know time is of the essence here with March 3rd looming. We're going to do what's right for the franchise, taking in some of the financial considerations as well. Yet we realize we'd like to be able to sign a great player like Steve Ott."

Mike Modano Expresses Interest In Becoming A Minority Owner of the Stars

According to ESPNDallas.com, Modano, 39, said he's interested in becoming an owner because he'd like to keep hockey interest in Dallas at a high level. He's played his entire career in the Stars organization since he was drafted first overall in the 1988 draft. He then moved with the organization from Minnesota to Dallas in 1993 and has been the face of the franchise. Modano is the highest-scoring American player in NHL history, has played in seven All-Star games and hoisted the Stanley Cup in 1999.

In totally unrelated hockey news, but a story near and dear to me, Captain Phil Harris of the crab fishing boat Cornelia Marie died today at the age of 53. His death was the result of complications following a stroke back on January 30th while conducting a crab off load. For those who watch the show Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel, you know that Phil was truly a family man. His two sons were deckhands on the Cornelia Marie.
