With the NHL draft approaching I started thinking about the disparity in draft positions between all-star forwards and Defensemen in the NHL. Almost every upper echelon center or winger in the NHL is usually a 1st round pick while several Defenseman (Weber, Chara, Lidstrom, etc) were 2nd round pics or later. I decided to put together a list of several All-Star teams and each players' draft position by round. Because there wasn't an All-Star game this season, last season or 2010 (crazy huh?) I used the teams from 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012. I know its not a huge sample size but it really put it into perspective... for me at least. Keep in mind that the "swing" players that switch between Center and Wing I marked as a Center. These are players like Kane, Skinner, Marleau, Zetterberg, etc. I also didn't take out a player if he made the all-star team multiple years. So if a player like Crosby or Chara made it in 2011 and 2012 I included them in both year's teams. Filtering through that would take a little more time than I'd be willing to put in right now.
- % of Defensemen that were 1st round pics - 15/50 or 30%
- % of Forwards that were 1st round pics - 80/102 or 78%
- % of ONLY Centers picked in the first round - 43/57 or 77%
