Dallas Stars 2013-2014 Season Top Moment #6: Vernon Fiddler Flubs Shootout Attempt

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

In a game where the Dallas Stars needed the two points, Vernon Fiddler had one of the more unique shootout attempts seen in many years.

As part of our look back at the season that was, the DBD staff has put together a Top 10 list of the best moments of the season, moments that occurred within the course of the year that were highlights of this particular team and it's fight to the playoffs. They're ranked from 1-10, and we'll present them in reverse order, leading up to the top moment of the 2013-2014 season.

As the calendar turned to April, the Dallas Stars found themselves on a run that would see them win five games in a row. A stretch of games and points collected on a part of the schedule that was critical. With the west so tight in the standings, it was imperative the Stars put space between themselves and other teams competing for that last wild card spot.

And they were going east -- where interconference games hadn't been to kind to Dallas.

Wins against the Washington Capitals and the Tampa Bay Lightning helped give the team a boost. Dropping matches against the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes put the Stars in a position where they needed to just keep winning and picking up points.

The Nashville Predators came to Dallas looking to play spoiler to the Stars' playoff hopes. They'd not get the satisfaction of dashing those dreams. Though they tied the game up in the third and forced the game to a shootout, the Stars would walk away with the two points.

Thanks in part to Vernon Fiddler's attempt in the shootout. It gave us one of the strangest moments of the season.

As he falls, everyone believes the Stars were only picking up one point. But then he magically makes the goal -- I don't think Pekka Rinne expected him to get an actual shot off after his flub -- tying the shootout and allowing Tyler Seguin to win it in the next round.

No spoilers were had that night, even if a bad edge on a skate tried to make it so.
