Dallas Stars' Prospect Grading Up And Down, NCAA, USHL Special

A grading of the Dallas Stars prospects based upon their season performance, improvement and performance compared to expectations.

This is a new feature that is debuting on Defending Big D this season: 'Prospect Grading Up And Down'. Essentially we will be grading how Dallas Stars prospects have done over the course of their seasons. This will be done on the basis of whether they've improved based upon previous seasons performance and how they've performed compared to expectations.

This particular grading will be of the Dallas Stars prospects based in the USHL and the NCAA.

Name 2013-14 Team Statistics Up/Down/Even Future

Alex Guptill (LW), 22 Drafted 3rd round 77th overall, 2010

University of Michigan (NCAA)

31GP 12G, 13A, 25P

Even

Alex Guptill appears to have stalled this last season in the NCAA. He didn't improve statistically from last year and was faced with discipline issues. His worth ethic was also questioned. Having left the NCAA and signed an ELC with the Dallas Stars its up to him to take the next step that is needed if he is to achieve his potential. Hopefully playing and being with the Texas Stars will solve any discipline issues and his size and skill could be better suited to the pro game. This season hasn't seen a step forward for Guptill. Next season could be a different story however.

Name 2013-14 Team Statistics Up/Down/Even Future

Devin Shore (C), 19, Drafted 2nd round, 61st overall, 2012

University of Maine (NCAA)

35GP

14G, 29A, 43P

Up

Devin Shore has continued to blossom in the NCAA into one of the Dallas Stars finest prospects and possibly their best centre prospect. He came close to doubling his point production from his first season in the NCAA and he has become a dominant player in the NCAAs toughest division. He has been named captain for the Black Bears next season and hopefully he will continue on his upward trajectory. Devin Shore is one of the most exciting prospects the Dallas Stars have and could turn pro at the end of his third year in the NCAA.

Name 2013-14 Team Statistics Up/Down/Even Future

Matej Paulovic (LW), 19, Drafted 5th round, 149th overall, 2013

Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL)

27GP 6G, 10A, 16P

Down

Matej Paulovic was one of the stranger picks from the 2013 NHL Draft for the Dallas Stars. He was taken in the CHL import draft and played 18 games with the Peterborough Petes before he was cut. He signed with Muskegon and has spent the rest of the season there. The future for Paulovic is unclear and the Dallas Stars will continue to own his rights for another three years due to changes in the CBA. It is possible that Paulovic could develop into something but at the moment I have a hard time seeing it happen.
