Dallas vs. Phoenix: The Mini-Football-Like-Season (3/24/14)

There are many different ways to deal with the Dallas Stars this season. I have no doubt each of us is dealing with this roller coaster ride of a team in their own unique way, but this is how I am choosing to deal with this last push for the (dare I say it…Dare! Dare!) playoffs.

Here is what we know:

  1. St. Louis, Chicago & Colorado are locked in for the top (3) seeds in the Central.
  2. San Jose, Anaheim & Los Angeles are locked in for the top (3) seeds in the Pacific.
  3. Minnesota isn’t going to be run down by either Phoenix or Dallas.
  4. Vancouver, Winnipeg & Nashville are the walking dead.
  5. Calgary and Edmonton are the no longer walking and very much dead.

Nothing here should come as a big shock, especially if you have been standings watching like I have for the last several weeks. I am choosing to think that Phoenix is the team we have to beat, regardless of what the other teams around us do. Barring a Disney scripted comeback by a team below us or a team blowing all four tires and screeching to a halt, Dallas will end up 8th or 9th.

I am choosing to also think of the last (16) games of the season as a football schedule. As it stands, Phoenix is (3-2) and Dallas is (1-3). Once Dallas plays Winnipeg later tonight (3/24/14) both teams will have 11 games remaining in their schedules.

The issue that this technique poses is what to do about and OT/SO that occurs in the final games (and you know there will be plenty). The first OT/SO is considered a loss, but a second OT/SO is considered a win. Lucky for me so far, this has yet to occur with either of these teams so far, but I have no doubt it will by the time this is all said and done.

Legend: TEAM (win-loss)[OT/SO]{points}

  • If game result causes [OT/SO] >1, then [OT/SO] resets to 0 and game = win

Dallas starts with 75 points and Phoenix starts with 73 points. So Dallas starts out this mini-football season with a (1) game lead. The goal should be to tie or beat Phoenix in this format.

Week 1: DAL (0-1)[0]{75}, PHX (0-1)[0]{73}

Dallas loses to Winnipeg in Regulation, and Phoenix loses to Boston in Regulation

Reaction: "Ok, neither team won, so we start this ‘mini-football-like-season’ off again next week at square one. Second verse, same as the first, a whole lot louder and a whole lot worse."

Week 2: DAL (0-2)[0]{75}, PHX (1-1)[0]{75}

Dallas loses to Pittsburgh in Regulation, and Phoenix wins against Calgary

Reaction: "Ok, there goes Dallas’s insurance game already. Not completely unexpected this week, what with Dallas playing one of the toughest teams and Phoenix playing one of the weaker squads."

Week 3: DAL (0-3)[0]{75}, PHX (2-1)[0]{77}

Dallas loses to Philadelphia in Regulation, and Phoenix wins against Los Angeles

Reaction: "Of course Phoenix scores twice at the end of the game to take the lead and hold on for the victory. The Phoenix Cockroaches are living up to their name. Dallas better figure out how to win against the East, or they’re going to be the cockroach that OD’s on raid bug spray."

Week 4: DAL (1-3)[0]{77}, PHX (3-1)[0]{79}

Dallas wins against Ottawa, and Phoenix wins against Florida in Regulation

Reaction: "Both teams win, glad to see Dallas took my advice and won an eastern conference game. Phoenix still holds a technical (1) game lead in the standings though."

Week 5: DAL --- , PHX (3-2)[0]{79}

Dallas --- , and Phoenix loses to Boston (again) in Regulation

Reaction: "Dallas game has yet to be played, but Phoenix has already lost this week. Huzzah! Boston; you gave us Seguin and Peverley and now you have beaten Phoenix twice at the end of this season. If you’re keeping score at home, that’s all the times this season. I’ll have to remember to kiss the bruin square on the mouth."

Week 6: DAL (plays Chicago), PHX (plays New York Rangers)

Week 7: DAL (plays Nashville), PHX (plays Pittsburgh)

Week 8: DAL (plays St. Louis), PHX (plays New Jersey)

Week 9: DAL (plays Washington), PHX (plays Minnesota)

Week 10: DAL (plays Carolina), PHX (plays Winnipeg)

Week 11: DAL (plays Tampa Bay), PHX (plays Los Angeles)

Week 12: DAL (plays Florida), PHX (plays Edmonton)

Week 13: DAL (plays Nashville), PHX (plays Columbus)

Week 14: DAL (plays Columbus), PHX (plays Nashville)

Week 15: DAL (plays St. Louis), PHX (plays San Jose)

Week 16: DAL (plays Phoenix), PHX (plays Dallas)
