Dallas Stars Place Forward Dustin Jeffrey on Waivers

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Jeffrey, acquired as a waiver claim from Pittsburgh earlier this season, has played 12 games since arriving in Dallas in mid-November.

The Dallas Stars indicated a young forward could be on his way back to the big leagues today as they placed Dustin Jeffrey on waivers.

The first confirmation of that move that I could find came from Renaud Lavoie from the Montreal Journal.

The Stars acquired Jeffrey, 25, on a waiver claim of their own earlier this season, picking him up Nov. 17 from the Pittsburgh Penguins. At the time, speculation was that the rumored Vernon Fiddler trade request had some real weight to it, but it obviously never came to fruition.

Since arriving in Dallas, he has played in 12 games with one assist and a minus-two rating while being used primarily in a third and fourth line role. He has 112 NHL games in his career, most of them with the Penguins, with 13 goals, 12 assists and 10 penalty minutes.

If Jeffrey clears, he can be assigned to the AHL's Texas Stars or he could stay in the NHL. Clearing means the team has a 30 day window (or 10 games he plays in, whichever comes first) in which they could send him to Texas without having to clear waivers again. Of course, he could be claimed as well. The Stars will know that in approximately 24 hours.

Right now, Jeffrey is the 13th forward on the Stars roster. Does waiving him and potentially then assigning him to Texas mean a young forward is on his way up? There are several possibilities with Texas, from Colton Sceviour, who impressed in his short stay earlier this season, to Travis Morin and even Chris Mueller or Curtis McKenzie. The odds-on favorite would likely be Sceviour, but there's no real way to know yet.

With Jeffrey still up, the Stars have 13 forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies on the NHL roster, not including Stephane Robidas, who is on injured reserve.

Updated: Actually, according to Mike Heika, the Stars are not likely to bring another forward up to fill this hole if he is sent down.

Dallas is home until the end of the month, and Texas is home until Feb. 4.
