Stars Finish Strong in Traverse City, Beat Columbus 7-1

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Alex Chiasson led the way with two goals as the Dallas Stars prospects put an exclamation point on an encouraging tournament.

The Dallas Stars fell short of their goal of playing in the first place game tonight, but took third place home with an emphatic and authoritative 7-1 shellacking of the Columbus Blue Jackets to end the 2013 Traverse City Prospects Tournament.

Brett Ritchie got a four-goal first period started when he scored his first of the tournament on the power play from McKenzie and Oleksiak. Valeri Nichushkin, Matej Stransky and Taylor Peters would pile on to give Dallas a 4-0 advantage.

Alex Chiasson would lead the way with a goal in each of the second and third periods and Oleksiak capped things off with a late third period marker (finishing up his Gordie Howe hat trick after another fight and an assist earlier).

The win sends an impressive group back to Dallas to open camp on Thursday with a 3-1 record and plenty of encouragement from the marquee names.

Curtis McKenzie finished the tournament as the Stars' leading scorer at four points thanks to his opening game hat trick against the St. Louis Blues prospects. Valeri Nichushkin co-lead the team in goals at three and notched a team high 16 shots on goal in four contests.

Alex Chiasson was quiet until a two-goal effort tonight, but was reportedly a force on offense along side Radek Faksa (also three points with one goal and two helpers) and Nichushkin while leading the team with a +5 rating. Jamie Oleksiak and Brett Ritchie also notched three points total in the tournament.

Jack Campbell was solid in net once again, stopping 24 of 25 tonight and 45 of 48 overall in the two games he played - Good for a .938 save percentage and a 1.50 GAA. He'll now spar with Dan Ellis and Christopher Nilstorp in camp, hoping to land the top job in Cedar Park.

Jason Dickinson, the often forgotten other first-round pick in 2013, finished with a -2 and no points in three games played.

Be sure to check out Mark Stepneski's YouTube page later tonight and tomorrow morning for more video coverage of the Stars' final outing in Traverse City.

Come on home, boys. Training camp awaits.
