The Dallas Stars used hard work and an aggresssive offensive attack to overwhelm the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night, winning 3-1 thanks in large part to a big first period.
Dallas looked a bit rough to start the game, giving the puck up time and again in the face of a tough Anaheim forecheck and only some close calls and big saves by Lehtonen kept the game scoreless. The Stars would fine some momentum after Lane MacDermid's second goal in as many games, although Cogliano would quickly tie the game on a play started by an improbably bounce off the boards.
The Stars proved unaffected by the quick score, and continued to put pressure on Anaheim. That hard pursuit paid off with a great shorthanded goal by Eric Nystrom and then by a gorgeous deflection by Alex Chiasson for the first goal of his young career.
The Stars would fade a bit offensively as the game progressed, failing to score on a four-minute power play despite some good looks and close chances.
So, the Stars win a big game on Friday night with some big performances by young players -- while debate over what the franchise truly needs to accomplish on the scoreboard continues.
