I’m supposed to be writing an article for a non-profit I blog for. But I made the mistake of opening up the Stars’ highlights from last night’s game against Vancouver when I first arrived at the coffee shop to work. Ten minutes later and I’m still reveling in it. And avoiding the gazes of my fellow patrons, who were probably a little put off by my celebrations during the barrage of third period goals. I didn’t know the result you see. And went through a complicated procedure of eyes half open and hand covering part of the computer screen, in order to open the highlight video without seeing the score first.
I’ve got it down to an art.
Now instead of working I feel compelled to write about the Stars. I mean... Six. And one. Over the last seven. And the six scalps? Barring Nashville, all against top level, competing teams. We're not supposed to be in this, but we are. Seeing Schneider break his stick on his way off the ice might have summed up everything about it. I don’t know what’s happening at ice level with these guys, but there’s something happening. At the trade deadline we firesale Morrow, Roy, and Jagr. Understandable, but still. All of them was kind of tough to swallow.
The bitterness lasted what, two days? And suddenly a guy called up from the AHL discovers an elite level golden touch. Fiddler has the best two weeks of his career. Whitney becomes an even stronger veteran presence. Benn starts putting pucks in the net. And goaltending? There’s nothing more to be said about goaltending. Bachman did a pretty amazing Kari impression for a couple weeks, and then Kari played the part of himself so well last night.
Is Chiasson playing tonight? I don’t know if it matters with the way everyone’s stepping up. I mean, five different goal scorers last night? Spread the wealth around guys. I like it.
This is the team we should have been all year. Another one tonight. Let’s do it again.
