Dallas Stars sign Curtis McKenzie to an Entry Level Contract

Jeff Sabo

The Dallas Stars have signed former Miami Redhawk and 2009 Dallas draft pick to a two year entry level contract.

The Dallas Stars have signed 2009 sixth round draft pick, 159th overall, Curtis McKenzie to a two year entry level deal which begins at the beginning of the 2013-2014 season. He is currently playing with the Dallas Stars AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars, on an Amateur Tryout Contract.

Curtis McKenzie has spent the past four years playing for Miami University in the CCHA. He has a total of 80 points through 159 NCAA games.

The 6"2 205 pound left wing is a big body who will help fill some gaps down in Austin. The Texas Stars may be light of left wings next season, especially with the possibility of both Matt Fraser and fellow former Miami Redhawk Reilly Smith having full time places in Dallas next season.

Curtis McKenzie has played in a single game for the Texas Stars this season and has yet to earn his first professional point.

Heres the Press Release from the Stars:

FRISCO, Texas - The Dallas Stars announced today that forward Curtis McKenzie has been signed to a two-year entry-level contract, beginning in the 2013-14 season.

McKenzie, 22, just completed his senior season at Miami (Ohio) University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), where he recorded 24 points (11G- 13A) and 80 penalty minutes in 39 games. The Golden, British Columbia native played in 158 career games for the Redhawks (NCAA Division I), posting 80 points (29G, 51A) and 285 penalty minutes. McKenzie helped Miami win the CCHA regular season title twice (2009-10, 2012-13), the 2011 CCHA Tournament and he made four-straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2010-2013), including reaching the 2010 Frozen Four (National Semifinals).

Prior to his college hockey career, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound left wing played two seasons of junior hockey with the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). In 102 career BCHL games he had 74 points (33G, 41A) and 171 penalty minutes and helped Penticton win the 2008 BCHL Championship. McKenzie was Dallas' sixth-round selection (159th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

McKenzie is currently playing on an amateur tryout contract for the Texas Stars, Dallas' development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).

The Dallas Stars, who currently sit three points out of the eighth and final playoff spot, faceoff against the Nashville Predators tonight at Bridgestone Arena at 7:00 p.m. CT (TV: FOX Sports Southwest PLUS; Radio: 1310 The Ticket).
