The Dallas Stars have traded Brenden Morrow for a young gun defense man. Does this mean they are going into a selling mode? No, Dallas is currently holding the 8th seed in the tight Western Conference playoff race. At this hour you could say that Colorado and Calgary are probably not going to make it, but who knows? No one really does, but in the shortened season you have to tread carefully. Dallas made the mistake of holding onto Brad Richards too long and it ended up costing them. They do not want to make the same mistake with Derek Roy which is why he is likely going to be wearing a different sweater by April 3rd.
The point where you have to draw the line is do you want to be what Dallas has been the past four years in the role of a competitor, a bubble team, or do you want to be champions. This organization has plenty of talent coming through the system. People have worried that we won't be able to ever bring in a true number one defense man. Going on a cliche here from the movie "Money Ball" you don't simply just replace a guy like Sergei Zubov you develop. Something Nieuwendyk and Gaglardi believe in.
A page has been turning slowly and that page is almost fully turned. Dallas is becoming a dominate organization again. Unlike Edmonton they are winning with their young guns leading the way. Dallas has enough depth and enough leaders to lead the kids in the right direction. Players like Roussel and Eakin are exceeding expectations along with Dillon. Who I believe is our next Zubov. Now in no way am I comparing Dillon to Zubov I'm just saying he will be the big name Dman. Finally someone to help out Goligoski. Also with the young depth it gives players like Oleksiak, Nemeth, and Jokipakka time to develop and take it slow. Don't forget the new comer of Joe Morrow. There is no need to rush them into the AHL like we may of thought we could of done with Glennie a few years back. Players need time to adjust to the speed and tempo of the modern day NHL. Dallas is becoming their old self again. Now its just bringing in the right players to push this team to the top. Aqusisitions such as Erik Cole are those types of moves that will bring the cup back to the lone star state.
Dallas has taken a huge step in the right direction this season. This year could be the end of the playoff drought. Who really knows? Don't ever count this team out. Good things are coming, just relax and let them come. To finish with one last movie quote "If you build it they will come." They are coming.
