I have to admit it. I really enjoy watching this Stars team. They are young, work hard, and I do not think anyone truly knows what to expect night to night from this hockey club. After Kari put up 30 saves through two periods to bailout a tired and mistake prone team, the Stars became opportunistic and put two goals in the back of the net in the third while still only managing six shots on net. The Stars are infuriating, and at points last night I was wondering if anyone on the hockey team other than Kari was going to show up at the Staples Center.
The young guys are going through their ups and downs just as everyone has expected. It is a trial by fire situation for the Stars and I think it will pay off sooner rather than later. Guys, like Roussel, Eakin, Dillon, and Larsen will only get better with the experience that they are earning this season. However, the problem with the young guys consistently playing is that some of them have been exposed. My focus is on Jordie Benn, consistently night in, and night out he is a liability for the Dallas Stars. From falling down last night skating over the blue line while the Kings were on a rush to not being able to pick up his guy in front of the net. He needs to be better, he has shown glimpses of what he could be, but there is no consistency to his game and in my opinion Phillip Larsen looks like he has a higher ceiling and the better defenseman at this point.
My following problem right now is with the entire team. This team struggles to play a consistent, solid hockey game every night. I believe it comes down to not having an identity, but that point has been run into the ground so I think its time to find something else. I am a big fan of the eye test and in my opinion last night the Stars did not play with any cohesiveness, with the exception of the top line. What stuck out to me last night is Erik Cole, every time he was on the ice he was impressive, however he seems to continually skate past his teammates, trying to split the defense and create something all by himself. With how juggled the lines have been this season, with injuries, call ups and trades it feels like there is a lack of chemistry that is plaguing this team from being a cohesive group.
This team is exciting and shows a ton of potential for the future, however the entire point of this fan post is that this team is consistently inconsistent and until they find that piece of their game they will continue to be in the lower half of the Western Conference standings, with trade rumors swirling. I am excited to see what happens in the final 18 games of the season, but I am of the thinking that we most likely go .500 and miss the playoffs. As I ended one of my previous fan posts, Here's to the future, because it is incredibly bright.
