Update: The Dallas Stars have announced that defensemen Trevor Daley and Aaron Rome have been placed on injured reserve, while both Jamie Oleksiak and Carl Sneep have been recalled from the Texas Stars. Daley's placement on IR is retroactive to Feb. 17, so technically Daley can return as soon as tomorrow's game against the Nashville Predators if he is deemed healthy.
Sneep's callup is likely insurance in case Daley is unable to play. The defenseman, acquired via trade in January, has played in 12 games for the Texas Stars this season. He has nine shots on goal and two points in his past five games and has three points overall on the season. Sneep was likely not the first option for the Stars after Oleksiak, but Patrik Nemeth, Tyler Sloan and Maxime Fortunus are all currently injured.
Rome, as noted below, is likely out long-term after suffering a foot injury on Saturday night.
Original story below:
The Dallas Stars are on their way to Nashville this afternoon after a big win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night, preparing for another road trip back-to-back that will once again test the depth of the team.
The biggest news for the day has to do with the defensemen, as Mike Heika reports from the team plane today that neither Aaron Rome nor Philip Larsen are on the trip to Nashville. Aaron Rome suffered an injured foot on Saturday night and did not return, with Glen Gulutzan saying Rome "could be out for some time," according to Heika. Rome is still waiting on an MRI.
Larsen is also likely suffering from a concussion and will be tested for such soon; for now he's listed as day-to-day with a head injury.
The Stars have recalled Jamie Oleksiak from the Texas Stars and hope to have Trevor Daley back on the ice on Monday; the veteran defenseman is likely to be able to play after suffering a neck/shoulder injury against Calgary.
Oleksiak played six games for the Stars and recorded his first NHL point in the first loss to the Calgary Flames and averaged around 15 minutes of ice time during his first stint in Dallas. It will be interesting to see if Oleksiak returns with any extra confidence this time; in four games in Austin since being reassigned the big defenseman has three goals and five points, including a game-tying goal in the final minutes of regulation on Saturday.
He looked okay during his time in Dallas but hopefully will start to become more comfortable at this next level soon. He's certainly proven he can dominate at the AHL level; 16 points (4 goals, 12 assists) and a plus-19 in 16 games since New Year's.
If Rome and Larsen are indeed out for a significant period of time, it will be interesting to see how the Stars address the depth on the blue line with just six healthy defensemen in Dallas. Patrik Nemeth is currently injured and the Stars have just about exhausted their NHL-ready depth in Austin, aside from perhaps Maxime Fortunus and Carl Sneep.
As far as goaltenders are concerned, Gulutzan indicated that Cristopher Nilstorp will be in net on Monday against the Predators, which would likely mean that Lehtonen would return on Tuesday night against the Blue Jackets.
