The Stars plugged that hole in their roster, at least for the moment, with a pair of roster moves Tuesday afternoon to bring up yet another young blueliner.
Fiddler, who has been out with an upper-body injury, is eligible to come off injured reserve at any time. With the moves, the Stars are still carrying the maximum 23 players. But assuming Rome's injury is as serious as Stars coach Lindy Ruff implied last night, he could go on IR when Fiddler is ready to come off and leave the extra roster spot for the defense.
However, Mike Heika thinks the move may indicate Rome's injury may not be that bad and the move is simply to get an extra body for the next game or two.
Gaunce, 23, has 11 games of experience with the Avs from the 2010-11 season and was acquired by the Stars last April in exchange for forward Tomas Vincour. The 6-foot-1, 203 pound defenseman has one goal and six assists with an even rating in 28 games with the Texas Stars this season.
If you want a little more background on Gaunce, Mark Stepneski wrote a profile of him after he was picked up last spring.
Here's the full release from the team:
The Dallas Stars announced today that forward Vernon Fiddler has been placed on injured reserve, retroactive to the upper-body injury he suffered on Dec. 7 vs. Philadelphia. The team also announced that they have recalled defenseman Cameron Gaunce from the Texas Stars, Dallas’ development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Fiddler, 33, has eight points in 28 games for Dallas this season (2-6=8). Now in his third campaign with the Stars, the 5-foot-11, 205-pound forward has skated in 156 games for the club, collecting 46 points (14-32=46) and 120 penalty minutes. The Edmonton, Alta., native was signed by Dallas as a free agent on July 1, 2011.;
Gaunce, 23, has skated in 28 games for Texas this season, earning seven points (1-6=7) and 25 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound defenseman from Markham, Ont., has played 11 career NHL games, all with the Colorado Avalanche, collecting one goal and 16 penalty minutes. Originally selected by Colorado in the second-round (50th overall) in the 2008 NHL Draft, Gaunce was acquired by Dallas via trade from Colorado in exchange for forward Tomas Vincour on April 2, 2013.
