This is my first post so bare with me a bit....
Hypothetically, if GMJN were to draft a partner for Val to create a dangerous second line scoring presence, who to pick?
Both Ivan Barbashev and Nikolay Goldobin are projected to be drafted in the 10-15 range. Both are Russian wings with phenomenal skill. Barbashev can play center, while Goldobin can play either wing. Both are left shots. Barbashev has the size advantage at 6'0.5" 185#, while Goldobin is 5'11.5" 178. Both players are already getting acclimated to the NA game due to playing in the OHL(Goldobin- Sarnia) and the QMJHL(Barbashev- Moncton).
I don't want to remove Val from the 14-91-43 line, but it is nice to think about the options. I believe a top 6 of Benn-Segs-Chiasson and Val-Barbashev-Richie would make me happy. Provided Barbashev is decent on the dot. That would give Chiasson more opportunities to score. Barbashev would give Val a linemate his age, hopefully sparking a benn-segs type chemistry. Not to mention they can both communicate to each other with ease.
Goldobin is a RW that can play LW, so you could use Val-Eakin-Goldobin. Granted I am of the opinion that Eakin doesn't work all that well as a 2C. In this scenario, I think it best that we get a FA/Trade for a decent 2C. Goldobin supposedly isn't that great in his own zone, so that makes it that much worse. I'm sure Ruff can work on it similar to the way he did Val early in the season. It's not ideal, but at the same time I am not sure either draft pick will make the roster their first year. Actually I highly doubt either will make their NHL rosters next season.
Both players are high-risk high-reward type players. Your thoughts?
