Dallas Stars' Tyler Seguin Named NHL's Second Star of the Week

Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

The young Stars center was a big piece of the offense in the team's three wins in Canada this past week.

Tyler Seguin was named the second star of the week by the NHL today. It comes on the heels of an incredibly hot week for the 21-year-old center. He had five goals and two assists over the last three games in which the Stars swept their Western Canada opponents (Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks) on the road.

His five-point night against Calgary led to variations of "Thanks Boston!" from Stars fans (and even some media) on Twitter and various social media forums, a reference to the trade this summer that landed the one-time Bruin in Dallas.

That hot week of scoring rocketed him up the league standings, where he now sits eighth overall in total points at the quarter mark of the season. He's in some good company atop the scoring leaderboard, too:

Player Team Position Goals Assists Points
Alexander Steen St Louis Blues Center 17 9 26
Sidney Crosby Pittsburgh Penguins Center 9 16 25
John Tavares New York Islanders Center 9 16 25
Alex Ovechkin Washington Capitals Left Wing 17 7 24
Nicklas Backstrom Washington Capitals Center 5 19 24
Steven Stamkos Tampa Bay Lightning Center 14 9 23
Corey Perry Anaheim Ducks Right Wing 12 11 23
Tyler Seguin Dallas Stars Center 12 11 23
Henrik Zetterberg Detroit Red Wings Left Wing 10 13 23
Ryan Getzlaf Anaheim Ducks Center 10 13 23

What is even more interesting, though, is how Seguin has earned his points. While many of these top ten players are feasting on power play points, Seguin's have come mainly at even strength. Seguin is third in the NHL at even strength points and his linemate Jamie Benn is right behind him at fourth. Now just imagine what they could do if the Stars' power play could click....

Video highlights

Here's a few highlights of Seguin's work in the past week that earned him the second star:

The empty netter against Edmonton was one of the prettier empty net goals I've seen scored by a Stars player in a while.

And then there was that whole four goals scored in one game thing....something a Stars player hasn't done since 2007.

Number one...

....number two....

.....number three.....

....and number four.

Dallas Stars make roster moves

A bit of an afternoon update on Stars roster moves as well -- the Stars returned Travis Morin to the Texas Stars of the AHL and have recalled defenseman Aaron Rome. With the addition of Dustin Jeffrey via waiver wire and Kevin Connauton on a conditioning assignment (which means he's still technically on the NHL roster) the Stars are carrying the maximum 23 players allowed with the big club. At the moment, the breakdown is eight defensemen, 13 forwards and two goalies.
