Howdy, first fan post here on Defending Big D. What a day to wake up on. A day many of us, myself included didnt always think was coming. This will be my 4th season of hockey in general to keep up with, my 4th season as a Dallas Stars fan, like you all. I survived my first (hopefully last?!) lockout. Nobody ever told me being a hockey fan would be so hard. Over the past three seasons I have become absolutely bat **** crazy about the Dallas Stars. Ive watched or listened to every game since I saw my first. Its taken over my life. I run line combinations in my dreams. Haha. All this said, I have never experienced playoff hockey. I was not apart of the awe inspiring playoff run. I had no idea. Ive become and stayed a fan through these "soul searching" years. The late season collapses are all I know. But, they never deterred my faith that this team was special. I woke up today believing that more than ever.
During the offseason, I made some big changes too. I moved out on my own in June. Ive continued to hold down a job, which is something I was unsure Id be able to do before brashly setting out on my own. I got my apartment, and quickly painted it the Dallas Stars team colors in hopes that Id be watching some hockey soon in my own place. Being able to celebrate as loud and unruly as I wanted when a goal was scored. Yelling profanities as loud as I can every time Corey Perry is showed on my screen. October came and past, November and December too. No hockey. Well, no NHL. During the lockout I started realizing my infatuation with the sport. I followed the Texas Stars instead. If there was a silver lining in that CBA clusterpuck its that Im now invested in the Texas Stars too. (What a season they're having!) I found myself watching college hockey. Searching youtube for Brett Ritchie or Radek Faksa highlights. Just anything to fill the gap, and for the most part did. But it still wasnt right. The absense of the Dallas Stars was definitely taking its toll every month that $100 cable and internet bill came in, realizing I didnt even use my HD FSSW channel I had been so proud of a few months beforehand, but still paying it instead of getting groceries in hopes that the lockout would end. I turned 21 and wasnt able to celebrate at the American Airlines Center, or watch a game at a bar. My dog wasnt giving me evil looks for making him wear his Stars jersey, while my own Stars jersey hung in the closet collecting dust...
Then, BAM. I was awake when the lockout ended early Sunday morning. I tweeted all the Stars players the second the news broke. Then I got one back from Eric Nystrom saying, "Here we go!!!!" and just like that, not only did I know the NHL was back, it FELT like the NHL was back. I took many shots of Jameson at 5AM to calm down and force myself to sleep. Tossing and turning in bed figuring line combinations in my head. Wondering if the Captain Morrow was healthy. If Kari was ready. To see Jaromir Jagr in a Dallas Stars jersey. It was finally all back for me, and for all of you too. And I dont think Ive ever been more excited in my life. I dont feel guilty or angry about returning easily to the NHL. I just want it back. The past two weeks seeing the advertising, hearing the radio commercials, seeing the billboards, all of it. Its finally time.
I'm so pumped to get the season started, and I'm happy to say that tonight when the puck drops I will be watching the Dallas Stars from my 1 bedroom apartment. The one with the green walls and gold trim. The one with an air hockey table instead of a dining table. The one with the Loui Eriksson fathead. The one with the horribly priced HD cable package. The one with the dog and owner wearing Stars jerseys. The one with the Dallas Stars mug full of Shiner Boch. My place.
Thanks to anyone who actually read this. Woke up with way too much on my mind and no one to share it with. Big thank you to the Defending Big D staff for running such an awesome blog, even through the hassle of the lockout. Love this community, its my favorite way to get into trouble for screwing off during work. Cant wait to get this season underway.
Go Stars Go!
