2012 NHL CBA Negotiations: Don Fehr: "At This Point Talks Are Off"

NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr: "At this point the talks are off."

Following the NBA and NFL labor stoppages of last year the assumption has been that the NHLPA would eventually end up surrendering a percentage of their revenue, permanently, to get the sides closer to a 50-50 split. Like the other sports. Don Fehr and the Player's Association have a different notion, and it's this sticking point that appears to have have finally brought things to a stop.

The NHLPA has repeatedly, now, expressed a desire to temporarily reduce the players share of the pie and re-assess things at a later date. The owners view that as a non-starter, and told the PA today that their proposal is not worth discussing if the players aren't willing to take "meaningful reduction."

No further talks are scheduled. Talks are officially broken off for the time being.

We've been waiting for the hammer to drop for weeks now. Here it is. We'll have more later but...this does not bode well.
