Over the past few weeks, I have really enjoyed the blogs on the Star's defence. The article concerning possible free agent targets and trade targets I thought was great. However, I felt it was missing one key element; What is it going to cost for each player? As we know, the stars aren't the deepest team in the league and the prospect pool is average. I do believe we have upgraded our offense this season and I would be reluctant to see any of the top 6 leave. Defensemen can be pricey so as a Stars fan, who would you be willing to see traded and more importantly, who would you think would need to be traded to bring in a decent NHL ready defenseman. Now the elephant in the room is Brendan Morrow but I think trading him would do more harm than good. You would get a decent return but I don’t think GM Joe and Co would get what they would want considering his age and injury problems recently. I also think it’s a non starter due to his importance to the franchise as a whole. Other options are all 3rd/4th line roll players so to get a good defenseman back, I could see the Stars having to give up at least 2. Possibly Tomas Vincour, Ryan Garbutt, Eric Nystrom but I still think teams won’t give up a top 4 defenseman for 2 3rd or 4th liners. I also think they are important to the stars now and into the future (especially Garbutt and Vincour). The other option is to add in a prospect, Reily Smith or Alex Chiasson etc. But again, will a team give up a top 4 defenseman for players that, for just now, have no major NHL impact? The last solution is to trade draft picks. But as I hear the 2013 draft is to be as deep as the 2003 draft, I would be very wary of giving away the possible talent that could be on offer this time next year. But maybe a late round pick would be worth sacrificing for some immediate help on the back end. I’d really love to hear what other Stars fans are thinking about our possible options.
