Well, it's that time of year again. The air is getting slightly more tolerable, the Rangers are beginning their playoff trench run, Gary Bettman is making an ass of himself, and EA is fixing to release their new batch of sports games. While the popular pick is Madden, hockey's #1 video game series, NHL, is probably the more entertaining venture. The game, unlike EA's other sports franchises, is always improving. For example, the addition of True Performance Skating will make the game feel fundamentally different, and that's just one of the many improvements to gameplay.
With the release of the game's demo today, and the drought of NHL and Stars news at the same time, I felt as though it'd be as good a time as any to gauge interest for this years version of the EASHL (EA Sports Hockey League) team. If you aren't familiar with the concept, the EASHL allows you to create your own player, and join a team of other people who do the same. Through frequent, solid play, you can improve your characters stats, eventually getting him (or her) to the rank of legend. The real appeal is the fact that it isn't the same kind of multiplayer as Call of Duty, where everyone has to look out for themselves and do their own thing. This mode is just like if we were playing a real game of hockey, requiring teamwork, communication, and strategy. The only thing missing is athletic ability, but who really needs that?
Defending Big D had a pretty solid team on NHL 12. You can see the summary of our year here. We never won a championship, but we made the finals multiple times. Anyway, if there's enough interest, it'd be pretty neat to make another team for next years game. This website's community is so amiable that getting along with teammates was a breeze, and the game nights, while sometimes jimmy-rustle tier, were always entertaining. It should be more of the same this year. With the changes EA is implementing this year, the "glitchers" should be less prevalent, making playing "good hockey", as we like to call our team's general playstyle, much more effective (You can see video evidence of EA trying to take away glitching right here). This, in theory, should give us at least a few more wins.
If you're interested in joining the club, go ahead and post your XBL Gamertag in the comments, and I'll make sure to send you a team invite when the game comes out on September 11th (If you were a regular on the team last year, I'll go ahead and send you an invite anyway. Ya'll know who you are). There's only a few requirements for joining- generally know how hockey works (which you already do), download and play the NHL 13 demo just to get a feel for the new skating (if you played 12, 11, or any other EA hockey game, it's a bit of a learning curve), and have an Xbox 360.
Below I'll post a few questions for discussions sakes, and to try and figure out what we're looking at as far as this team goes. Feel free to answer any of these in the comments.
1. What position would you like to regularly play?
2. Do you have a certain playstyle (DP's "shutdown" style, Jon's "run n gun" antics) or move (Chika's one-handed Ribeiro crap) that you like to use frequently?
3. Do you have any preference to the type of matchup you like to play with? For example, "2's" (2 human players per team, LOT'S of dangling and glitch goals) or "6's" (No computer players, requires a ton of teamwork and communication, however, less glitchers).
4. What uniforms do you want us to wear? Specifically, any preference to colors? (I take all feedback into account when I make the unis, but I'm 99% sure that they'll be green again.)
5. Is Bonesaw ready?
Hope to play with ya'll soon.
