Mike Heika is reporting that the Dallas Stars have hired former general manager Bob Gainey as a consultant for the organization.
Gainey recently ended a similar job with the Montreal Canadiens and will likely be a sounding board for general manager Joe Nieuwendyk. Stars president Jim Lites confirmed the move to Heika on Wednesday afternoon.
``I think the most important thing I can do in my job is hire good people, and Bob is one of the best persons I know,'' Lites said. ``He was available, he was very interested in what we've been able to accomplish, and I just believe having a voice like that will be extremely beneficial in a lot of ways.''
Gainey became the head coach of the Minnesota North Stars in 1990 and general manager of the franchise in 1992, moving with the team to Dallas. He stepped down from the coaching role when Ken Hitchcock arrived in 1996 and left the general manger's job in 2002. He spent 2006-2012 with the Canadiens in roles ranging from interim coach to general manager and finally consultant.
Details of his job description are still being finalized.
