I know this has been discussed so much that the logo should now almost have a dead horse on it but with the Stars talking about switching the logo I thought it would be interesting to hear anyone's ideas who is thinking "outside the box". I also included a poll after the jump to get a feel for everyone's thoughts on what direction they should head. I'm curious as to whether I'm in the majority or minority on this topic.
I've been a Stars fan from day one but I wish Green would've maybe changed the team name when he moved the team to Dallas. Guess he was probably feeling guilty about the situation and somehow thought keeping part of the name to go with the Stars at night in Texas was a good idea. Even though I'm a Stars fan though I'm always hesitant to buy any merchandise because I don't like the way the logo translates onto clothing. I'm sure when Cuban changed the Mavs logo it did wonders for merchandise sales, and I know the whole "winning" thing didn't hurt either. But I do think that switching the logo will maybe help bring some old and new fans back. Look no further than what bar/restaurant owners in Dallas do when business is struggling; they close down for awhile, remodel/rename and people start coming back in to see the changes. This is somewhat fitting because you can look at the organization as a bar/restaurant that lost all of its client's/fans favorite bartenders like Modano, Turco, Lehtinen and the bouncer at the door is no longer Hatcher. I know this analogy isn't perfect but work with me people. As I stated above, this post is about "thinking outside the box" on ideas for new Stars jerseys and logos.
The problem I have with the current logo is that the full "Dallas Stars" name is on it and not really encapsilated by anything. My favorite logos are the ones that can almost stand alone without a name on it and everyone knows what team is being represented (ie Blackhawks, Red Wings, etc.). I'm kind of at the point where I think it should either have a vintage feel to it or be totally revamped.
The vintage feeling I'm talking about can best be summed up best in Matthew Duke's concept work. I particularly like the secondary logo he developed. I'm not saying his design is perfect but I like where his head is at going old school on it.
For revamping the logo the talk has also been about switching to the Red, White, and Blue color scheme like what Darryl Reaugh posted here. Its an interesting idea and maybe switching to an emblem more like the one that Corsicana, Texas uses (a little down the page in the middle) might be a better fit. The only problem with using this color scheme is making jerseys that don't come off as too colorful or vibrant making them annoying to look at. Although it seems like both the Texas and New York Rangers have done it well for the most part. I also randomly stumbled upon this logo for Embassy skateboards that maybe could inspire some stuff.
I started thinking about using Star constellations, particularly the Taurus (bull), as a logo but then remembered the train wreck of a third jersey from the 2003-04 season. However, I then saw that Mike Ivall is already way ahead of me with his Stars concept design. This logo really strikes me as best used for maybe an AHL jersey or NHL third jersey but I am definitely a fan. Could be cool to use it full time for the Texas Stars jerseys and get the fans feelings. Keeping with this theme I saw this concept design that used the longhorn idea. Using a longhorn probably isn't the best idea seeing that it would alienate the Stars fans that are Texas A&M, Texas Tech, SMU, etc, fans/alumni but I like the creativity on it.
In summary, I really am of the opinion the Stars logo should change and I'm wondering if its a common feeling. Feel free to post anything you've seen that kind of keeps with the Texas or Star constellations theme whether its Red, White, and Blue, or black and white. I'm not judging, I mean I posted a city logo. Not being a fan of anyone in the playoffs right now is tough so I guess I'm trying to maintain sanity with this.
