Dallas Stars Recall Matt Fraser; Jake Dowell Placed on IR
The Dallas Stars have announced that forward Matt Fraser has been recalled from the Texas Stars, with Jake Dowell being placed on Injured Reserve with an upper body injury suffered last night in Montreal.
Dowell had been playing relatively well as of late, centering the fourth line and providing a surge of energy that the Stars have desperately needed in recent games. Dowell, along with Adam Burish, had been one of the more consistent and effective players for the Stars and found some offensive production recently as well.
With Dowell out for at least he next week, Matt Fraser will join the team in Chicago. Fraser is fourth in the AHL with 26 goals in 50 games. In the month of February, Fraser has five goals and seven points, with an even plus/minus in eight games. The defensive issues that plagued the AHL rookie to start the season have evened out a bit and hopefully he'll get more than the four minutes of ice time he enjoyed in his NHL debut just before the All-Star break.
Full press release after the jump.
Frisco, TX - The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has placed center Jake Dowell on injured reserve with an upper body injury retroactive to Feb. 21 and recalled forward Matt Fraser from the Texas Stars, Dallas' primary affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). Dowell is expected to miss approximately a week.Dowell, 26, has skated in 43 games for Dallas this season, notching one goal and four assists. The 6-0, 198-pound center from Eau Claire, WI recorded assists in two of his last four games including one assist against Montreal on Tuesday night.
Fraser, 21, appeared in his first career NHL game earlier this season against Anaheim on Jan. 24. In 50 games for Texas this season, Fraser ranks second on the team in scoring with 42 points (26 goals, 16 assists). He leads the club with 26 goals and ranks fourth overall in goal scoring in the AHL. The 6-2, 207-pound forward was signed to a three-year entry-level contract by Dallas on Nov. 17, 2010.
The Dallas Stars faceoff against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. CT at United Center (TV: FOX Sports Southwest; Radio:1310 The Ticket).

This is what the teams committed to making the playoffs do at the trade deadline – improving.
Have we determined what Stars are doing this year: trying to make playoffs or going for high draft pick? I am still confused.
Glad to see Fraser get another chance.
He’s a goal-scoring machine. Last time I checked that was something the Stars (and 29 other teams) needed.
I'm still a little worried about how well he'll translate to the NHL, but looking forward to it.

When I've watched him he hasn't used his size.
And he struggles to get his own shot off. He needed someone feeding him the puck to generate any offense. He could fix some of those things as he ages, but how much he’s really going to be able to do in a fourth line role is debatable. I’d have probably recalled Glennie.

I've only see him play
once in CP and I was impressed. Went to the net hard, would skate the puck down the wing himself and rip accurate shots on net. Saw him hit a couple times.

I'm sure he does some. He just didn't when much I saw him.

Besides scoring in the AHL, he did well in the prospects tournament and the preseason.
That should give you a bit more cofidence.
Plus, even if he’s only half as effective for us as he is for the Texas Stars, that’s still a 20 goal a year player.
Please disregard everything I wrote yday about Texas having a shot at the playoffs
Currently missing Vincour, Larsen, Garbutt, Fraser, Sawada, Labrie, Spang and Schultz from opening day roster.
