Week of 2-13 OT Thread

I apologize that this wasn't published earlier today. Stupid midterms. I tried to delegate somebody else to do it, but apparently I consulted somebody busier than I am (although it doesn't appear to be the case now, I was studying intently for an exam I got out of an hour ago) and I never heard back from him, and it's evident that the Off-Topic Thread hasn't been uploaded yet.

My snaps game didn't appear to click with many of you all, so no more experiments like that.

So...

Reese's Pieces or M&M's?

Would you ever go see a movie "remastered in 3D?" Seems like a waste of money to me. But, if you decided it was a worthwhile event, what would you see?

Was this parent's "lesson" too extreme, or justified?

What do you make of the below "Valentine's Prank?"

Maybe I want to be able to do this? Maybe? No...Definitely.

I largely want this to be an entertainment thread. Gotta keep up the morale of the blog somehow, right?

Cheers.

I saw that video of the parent over the weekend

and while I would be pissed too, there is no way I would be that crazy. That dude is a little too amped over a teenage girl being a teenage girl. Kids get rebellious at that age, so I don’t think he’s justified doing what he did. I don’t know the whole story, but it seems harsh.

I would love to see someone do the engagement ring prank. Effing hilarious, that.

Peanut Butter M&M’s.

I agree with you on the whole “re-mastered in 3D” crap. It is a money making scheme that makes you pay again to see special effects. There might be a handful of movies that I would go see in 3D, but not many, and not Episode I: Phantom Menace. I think a film like Ghostbusters, Army of Darkness, or Heavy Metal would be worth going to see in 3D.

By the way, I liked the Snaps game, sorry it wasn’t popular.

Also, for anyone that has Directv, Center Ice free preview today through Sunday. Which means I’ll be able to watch some games instead of my customary listening to R&R over the internet.

Here’s hoping we get some wins this week! Go Stars!

See, I don't know exactly what led up to him publicizing his discipline of his daughter on YouTube

But, there are many ways to look at it without knowing the whole story.
It could be that his daughter is in fact a spoiled brat with no perspective on how hard life can be. It could also be that the father is also an attention-seeking person just like his daughter (seriously, he published it to YouTube AND Facebook…his Facebook is public, by the way.) But the facts are, he read aloud a letter that was published by his daughter on her Facebook profile, and he published the video to YouTube, the most popular medium for online video content. And he published that video to his Facebook. So, if you look at it that way, it would appear that he’s kind of an attention whore.
That being said, and again, not knowing everything that led up to the video, I think the father is excessive in his punishment. But again, maybe the father tried to take steps before deciding to put bullets into his daughter’s computer. Maybe he didn’t. Perhaps a lot of crap went down between the letter being published and he was left “no choice” but to go to that extreme.
I don’t know why I’m analyzing all the possible causes of why the father shot the laptop. Oh wait…I’m a COMM major…this is what I do.

And on the 3D subject

It really is a money-making gimmick, in my honest, cynical opinion. If it wasn’t shot in 3D, it’s going to look like trash rendered in 3D. The same thing goes for trying to upconvert SD video into HD video. The file will certainly be HD, but the content won’t be HD.
But also…the USC Band shot a 3D documentary last semester, and I’m wondering if they’ve finished putting it all together…but I also don’t know what it would look like in 2D…hmm…

I loved the Snaps game when I was younger

I’m just too damn busy now to frolic on the interwebs.

Dad overreacted, but the girl acted like a spoiled brat. Respect your parents. Do your chores without (much) complaint.

Peanut M&M’s

Fake engagement rings would be hilarious, as long as it didn’t happen to me. If it did, that’s a cruel prank…but sometime’s that’s the point.

I'm always one for a great prank.

I’ve done some great Facebook hacks, one of which involved changing my friend’s status to read, “Currently on set with Steven Spielberg!” 43 people “Liked” it, and 10 comments were written along the lines of “DUDE THAT’S AWESOME!”
He wasn’t too happy about his email going off constantly for about two hours.

See that's a harmless one.

Getting a girl’s hopes up that she’s getting proposed to and then finding out its fake…it spells disaster from every angle

I agree with Roger Ebert on 3D.

Why I hate 3D and you should too
http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2010/04/30/why-i-hate-3-d-and-you-should-too.html

Why 3D doesn’t work and never will. Case closed.
http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2011/01/post_4.html

As a film guy I really don’t like it. To me the whole point of film is to immerse yourself in a different world, lose yourself in a story and get your mind to think of concepts it may never have before. Some people have told me that they think 3D does in fact immerse people into the film and those people…well, are just completely wrong. 3D completely takes me out of a film. It is a barrier. A constant reminder that you’re watching a movie and on top of that you’re also losing some of the quality as far as the amount of light is concerned. We’ve gone to such great technological lengths with HD and Blu-ray to finally be able to see many classic films crystal clear, as they were intended and shot. Then IMHO we take a big step backwards in order to try and get children to make their parents endure the travesty that is the “new” bastardized versions of Star Wars. All in glorious 3D of course, so we can continue to have our noses rubbed in the fact that Lucas has stolen our Star Wars from us and that he actually keeps making the films worse with every step. Throwing a gimmick on classic movies so we can sell the movie all over again is just wrong. So is making a movie in 3D so you can just charge more for movie tickets. I saw Avatar in 3D. It looks better in 2D. When I saw the 3D portion of The Order of the Phoenix in IMAX it was absolutely distracting and terrible. Then I saw Tron: Legacy in both formats as well and that was the tipping point for me. That was the moment I started to really hate 3D. Let me tell you that movie is absolutely gorgeous in 2D. Not the greatest movie by a long shot but it is beautiful and it does look better in 2D. I’ve already previously lamented my newly purchased copy of the five disc collectors edition of Blade Runner and I tell you if anyone tried to throw 3D on that stunning visual masterpiece of a movie they should be slapped about the face. No need for that gimmicky junk. When it comes to 3D, just say NO! By buying into that overpriced, vomit inducing, cash-grab technology you’re doing the entire film industry, and more importantly yourself, a great disservice.

Some people have told me that they think 3D does in fact immerse people into the film and those people…well, are just completely wrong.

These are also probably the same people who’d tweet this:

(unless they’re your contemporaries…this is more of my generation…I know…just plain sad)
I was not impressed with Avatar both times I saw it. I care more about the story of the film, and the story was not good…at all. And I hated all the accolades it was getting because of it.
What do you have to say about live sports in 3D, if you’ve ever seen it?

by DFWTrojanTuba on Feb 14, 2012 12:27 AM CST up reply actions

I'm really not crazy about it even in live sports.

That second article where it talks about how our eyes aren’t meant to focus and converge at two different distances made a big impact on me. The idea of that just kind of bothers me. Until they actually build the Holodeck I think 2D is just the best option.

I liked The Adventures of Tintin. 3D worked fine.

It’s best used, when you don’t “think about it”.

Avatar was okay, but only because Stephen Lang is Duke Nukem, he was the best thing in that movie. As a movie Avatar was something similar to Jurassic Park. You just watch the show and don’t mind the fact that the movie isn’t that special. And I still love Jurassic Park.

Other that these I have seen only Alice in Wonderland 3D and that really didn’t work.

Trevor Daley is my cup of tea.

by Henri Muroke on Feb 14, 2012 6:33 AM CST up reply actions

That's the trick though when you say, "3D worked fine."

If it only “works” but it doesn’t truly ADD to the film’s experience then to me it’s detrimental. The very first lesson I learned in Film school was the need to determine if what you’re putting in the movie actually adds to the film as a whole. Every scene needs to further the story in some way and each element should build on what’s there and that’s how you make a good movie. The moment something actually detracts, or the addition of a scene is superfluous, it needs to wind up on the cutting room floor. That’s how I feel about 3D. It is usually way more of a distraction and a barrier than it is adding anything to the movie. It just doesn’t benefit a film really. Somewhere along the way James Cameron forgot that.

True, that's also why didn't pay attention to it.

There are some who think that 3D might be the future of movies, also some who think it will be within ten years. Hate to say it, but right now I see no reason why it would be that way.

Good thing with Cameron is that he might bring Arnold with him. It was done deal even with Avatar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJRSBxeN1tY

Trevor Daley is my cup of tea.

by Henri Muroke on Feb 14, 2012 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

Actually, 3D movie sales are in steady decline.

While James Cameron still thinks it’s the future it appears that the majority of people are starting to disagree with him. You look at products like the Nintendo 3Ds where many people complained about it and pretty much just turn it off five minutes after they purchased it. I feel like it’s dying and I’m okay with that.

Perhaps it might go down.

I have never been to interested with 3D, but I also have nothing against it. But like you have said, it’s not that special.

But will I see Hobbit in 3D? Who knows? Perhaps one time, them others 99999 times will be without it. =)

I actually enjoyed tron in 3-d...

I didn’t think it was overdone like some of the others. But i love the movie itself. They made such a beautiful world with only 2 colors, it was astounding.

I can do without 3-d. But since I got one of the copies of Avatar in 3-D, and plan on selling it for a few hundred bucks on ebay once they can’t be obtained anymore, I hope that I stay in the minority for a few more months.

I really liked the movie too.

The only thing that I had any trouble with was the face animation for CLU and younger Flynn. That’s still just not quite there yet unfortunately. But, I thought the story was good, the acting was good, it’s beautiful, and it’s definitely one that’s a buy in my opinion. I’m telling you though it actually looks better in 2D. It’s like magic on a disc when I put that in my blu-ray player. It is one of the most gorgeous movies I’ve ever seen. You do actually lose some of that crispness watching it in 3D.

Yeah, I've got it in both, and saw it in theaters both ways.

I thought the 3-d added a lot to the dogfight in the air, other than that, I didn’t really notice it. And I think I’ve nailed down the thing that bugs me about CLU — it’s the eyebrows. They’re too fluid and smooth with their movement.

To me it's his mouth. It's when he tries to form certain words that it just doesn't look right.

If he’s just standing there doing nothing it’s fine but when he’s trying to emote with words it’s just not accurate. I think your probably right about the eyebrows too now that I think about it. I’ll have to look at that next time I watch it.

Peter Jackson might do something cool with it.

He helped with Tintin and – I think – will direct the next one himself. He also might do some good with it in Hobbit, but I don’t need it in Hobbit. If it works, cool, but it’s not a must.

Well that's just one theory to explain the paradox.

That’s where we get the idea for the possibility of multiple dimensions so it’s actually an infinitesimal number of worlds.

So in that theory

There might be a dimension out there where the Stars never signed Avery, He who shall not be named actually sold the team before he wen’t bankrupt, and they are on their way to winning the Stanley Cup again.

Not to contradict you,

but string theorists think there’s about 13 dimensions. And they are not “alternate dimensions” like in the classic show “Sliders.” Instead, it’s an expansion of the dimensions that we know.

So, unfortunately, we have signed Sean Avery in every single dimension.

I was talking specifically about Everett's initial Many Worlds Interpretation (MWI) of Schrodinger's Cat.

That assumes every decision branches into two different dimensions. I wasn’t going all the way down the rabbit hole of String Theory.

Or M Theory also would work to that end.

Somewhere in the 11th dimension there are many universes… … …and the explanation for the weakness of gravity… … …Multiverse! Ugh… … …my head hurts

that's more of alternate reality than anything else though

which, unfortunately for quantum mechanics, has become synonymous with dimensions.
