The National Hockey League announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through October 24.

Here's the press release from the Dallas Stars...

NEW YORK (October 4, 2012) - The National Hockey League announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through October 24. A total of 82 regular-season games were scheduled for Oct. 11 through Oct. 24.

The cancellation was necessary because of the absence of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL.

So there you have it, as we've been fearing. The Stars' official website reflects the change, with a first date now scheduled against the Vancouver Canucks on October 25th.

For Dallas this cancellation affects six games specifically.

Oct. 13 @ Phoenix
Oct 14. @ Anaheim
Oct. 16 Phoenix
Oct. 18 Minnesota
Oct. 20 @ Boston
Oct. 23 @ Ottawa

The language in the release says that the "regular season schedule" through October 24th was cancelled. Some, such as Michael Russo on Twitter, are suggesting that the verbiage could possibly have been chosen to get around refund policies, as officially the "games" have not been cancelled, only their schedule.

It says that 82 games "were scheduled" for this time period, not that 82 games have been cancelled.

The games themselves could technically still be played. Technically.
