Dallas Stars Prospect Update: First Star Honours For Ritchie, Smith; Esa Lindell Loaned

Nick Laham

How have the Dallas Stars prospects done in this past week of hockey? Defending Big D is committed to to giving you weekly updates as their seasons progress.

It's been another busy week for Dallas Stars prospects around the world with some transfer news from Europe, First Star Honors in the OHL and the Stars NCAA prospects doing well.

All of the prospects in the OHL have been scoring this week with 5 goals being scored by a combination of Radek Faksa, Brett Ritchie and Gemel Smith.

Radek Faksa has continued to struggle on offense on a Kitchener Rangers team that had a bad start to the season though they are now at 6-4-1 through their first eleven games. Hopefully they will continue to improve as the season progresses. In their last game of the week against Kingston Frontenacs Radek Faksa had a goal and an assist the goal can be seen here at the 0.22 mark. His performance earned him third star honours.

Brett Ritchie continues to perform for the Niagara IceDogs putting up three points over their last two games. In their game on Saturday Brett Ritchie scored two goals and earned First Star honours. His two goals can be seen here the two plays start at the 0.48 mark. In his previous game he continued to increase his assist total, now at 11 assist on the season.

Gemel Smith also scored twice this week putting up a goal and a +3 rating in Owen Sound Attack's first game against the Ottawa 67s. His game against the Ottawa 67s came on a 4 on 4 situation which can be seen here the play starts at 0.38. In the game against the Oshawa Generals Gemel Smith earned First Star honours and scored Owen Sounds lone goal in a 2-1 loss. There are highlights of the game and his goal available here.

Matej Stransky finally appears to be racking up the points having got 8 of his 11 points through his last 6 games. Hopefully this is the start of a come back for the Saskatoon Blades who have had a dismal beginning to the season, especially considering they are hosting the Memorial Cup Tournament this season.

Branden Troock put up 2 points this week over three games for the Seattle Thunderbirds scoring during a 2-1 loss to the Spokane Chiefs. There are highlights available to see his goal here. During Seattle's 6-1 loss to the Portland Winterhawks Troock finished with a -3 rating.

Mike Winther had a quieter week putting up a lone assist in the first of Prince Albert's three games this week. Their fourth and final game against the Swift Current Broncos on Sunday was a 5-1 victory in which Mike Winther finished with a goal and a +2 rating.

In the QMJHL Troy Vance and the Victoriaville Tigres played in two games this week in which he finishes with 0 points but with a +1 rating.

In Sweden Ludwig Bystrom played only a single game this week. He missed the first one, presumably due to injury/illness, and played only 51 seconds in the single game he played. Hopefully the limited ice time was due to lingering effects of what kept him out in the previous game and not a sign that he will be getting greatly reduced ice time.

Emil Molin played two games this week getting around 10 minutes of ice time on average in both games. He is still playing on Byrnas third line.

In Finland Esa Lindell, formally of Jokerit of the SM-Liiga, was loaned to Kiekko-Vantaa of Mestis (Finlands second tier league). He has played two games so far and scored a single goal. The logic behind this appears to be to let him develop more and get more ice time in an easier league. This does not effect his status with the Dallas Stars.

Despite the best efforts of Jyrki Jokipakka his team, IIves, are in the basement of the SM-Liiga. During their last three games Jokipakka has been playing around 23 minutes per game on average. He finishes the week with a single assist.

Its been a good week in the NCAA for Dallas Stars prospects with Scott WInkler and Alex Guptill putting up two goals each. During their first game of the week Alex Guptill's two goals was enough to earn him second star honours. Curtis McKenzie has returned from injury and got two assists through his first two games this season. Devin Shore got a single assist this week and Sinitsyn has yet to register a point.
