How have the Dallas Stars prospects done in this past week of hockey? Defending Big D is committed to to giving you weekly updates as their seasons progress.
This week both the NCAA and the AHL have started and there are plenty of Stars prospects in both. The Texas Stars won their first game on Saturday against San Antonio 2-1 and won in overtime against the Charlotte Checkers in Ceder Park on Sunday. Though the Texas Stars have many prospects these updates will focus more on those players playing in the juniors, NCAA and abroad. There will be plenty of coverage of the Texas Stars all week but I will still update their stats in the table below.
Brett Ritchie has been held pointless through the last 4 games during a poor week for the Niagara IceDogs. They won only one of their four games this week and it reflected on Brett Ritchie who finished the first two games with a -3 rating. Though in the third game against the Sarnia Sting he did finish with a +2 despite the IceDogs losing 4-3 in overtime. He was however given a game misconduct late in the third period for boarding. They did win their Sunday game against Windsor Spitfires but again Brett Ritchie was held without a point.
Radek Faksa and the Kitchener Rangers had a quiet week with both of their two games being played this weekend. He got an assist in the first game and was held pointless in the second game which they lost 6-2. The Rangers haven't had a great start to the season and will have to step up as they have won only three of their first eight games.
Gemel Smith continues to put up the points for Owen Sound with two assists in the last two games. He's still on his point per game pace from last week and is helping keep Owen Sound Attack on top of the Midwest division.
Mike Winther has returned from the groin injury that kept him out last week and had a relatively good week, scoring a goal in his first game back and earning third star honours against the Portland Winterhawks in the Prince Albert Raiders second game of the week. In their third game however they suffered a 9-0 rout at the hands of the Moose Jaw Warriors, on the positive side despite the Raiders letting in nine goals Winther finished with an even +/- rating.
The Saskatoon Blades are still suffering defensive problems, and some offensive ones, and were shut out against the Portland Winterhawks on Tuesday. Stransky managed to get two assists against Kootenay Ice in their second game of the week though it wasn't enough and the Blades lost 4-3. Stransky did have a goal and an assist on Sunday for Saskatoon, as the Blades beat Medicine Hat 6-3. The Blades won both games over the weekend, with Stransky picking up three total points.
In the WHL Branden Troock is still out with an illness and hasn't played a single game this week for the Seattle Thunderbirds. In the QMJHL Troy Vance has had a relatively horrible week having a -3 rating in Wednesday's game against Baie-Comeau Drakkar and was out for both of the Tigres games this weekend because of illness.
Emil Molin has earned himself what appears to be a permanent spot on Byrnas third line and is now averaging just under 10 minutes of ice time a game. He also scored in Byrnas victory over Rogle this week and the goal can be seen here, the play starts at the 1.00 mark. The footage is in Swedish though.
Ludwig Bystrom also scored this week getting a goal during Modo's 4-0 defeat of AIK and has now got himself a regular position on Modo's third defensive pairing. He is also averaging just under 10 minutes of ice time a game but is being used more defensively than offensively. You can see his goal here, the play starts at 1.13. Again this link is in Swedish.
Jyrki Jokipakka continues to hold together IIves and has continued playing big minutes averaging about 27 minutes in the last two games and had an assist as well. Jokipakka has stepped up into a leadership role and has been playing good sensible hockey. It bodes well for Dallas Stars fans that he can play those kind of minutes and also take a leadership role in a team that is likely to be fighting relegation at the end of the season. It will help him for the jump to North America when it occurs.
Esa Lindell has yet to register a point in the SM-Liiga but is getting plenty of ice time against the tough opponents. He is getting around just under 20 minutes a game. He still needs to refine his defensive game a lot and can be caught out by being too enthusiastic on occasion. He is still young however and these things will be refined with a few more years in the SM-Liiga.
The NCAA got going this week with four of the Dallas Stars NCAA prospects in action. Devin Shore was on national television earlier this week for the University of Maines 1-0 loss to Notre Dame. Despite being a freshman he was centring the Black Bears first line. He appears to be becoming their number 1 playmaking centre.
Both Scott WInkler and Alex Guptill have got points in their first two games for their respective teams. Scott Winkler had a goal and assist in Colorado College's second game against Clarkson University while Alex Guptill got an assist against Rochester Institution of Technology. Dmitry Sinitsyn has yet to register a point for U-Mass Lowell.
Curtis McKenzie has not played a game for the University of Miami (Ohio) due to an upper body injury.
