The Texas Stars opened a season of what they hope is redemption on a positive note under head coach Willie Desjardins, winning 2-1 against the San Antonio Rampage.
The Texas Stars opened their season of redemption on the road in San Antonio Friday night, earning new coach Willie Desjardins his first AHL win with Cedar Park defeating the Rampage 2-1 on opening night (and what should have been opening night for the Dallas Stars as well) of the American League's season.
Texas utilized mistakes in San Antonio's game and ample special teams favor-ability in the early going to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Maxime Fortunus and Dallas veteran Toby Petersen.
An improved Texas defense over a year ago, backstopped tonight by Christopher Nihlstorp (Jack Campbell is expected to start Sunday night at home against Charlotte), kept the chances against at a minimum as Willie's crew out-shot the Rampage by a sum of 34-19. The Stars allowed San Antonio just four third-period shots as they milked home the lead.
