Week of 1/9 OT Thread: All Replies Must be in French

Okay, the replies don't actually have to be in French. I just wanted to mock the Habs fans, who yet again protested that their coach doesn't know how to speak it yet. Seriously? How about protesting the crappy team you guys have had for 20+ years instead?

Graham is getting back into the swing of classes, so he asked me to fill in for him on the OT thread this morning. I don't know how many talking points I have, but we'll just see where it goes, shall we?

Football playoffs - Anyone cheering for a particular team? Seems like most people are Saints and Broncos fans at this point. I'm impartial, as I don't really care for the sport. But I do have a superbowl party every year. It's easier to plan than Stanley Cup Parties, that's for sure.

Do you guys have any offbeat movies? Since we discussed Equilibrium last week, I thought I'd throw this one out there. I have two that I absolutely love. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is my comedy of choice. If you grew up playing video games, then you will enjoy this movie. For real. I literally quote this movie at least 3 times a day. For the serious one, it's called "Blindness." It has Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo in it. Basically, it is about blindness that becomes contagious. It follows a man and his wife as they are put into a quarantine building, and essentially left on there own (with about 50 others) trying to survive. Except the wife can actually see -- she lied about being blind just so she wouldn't leave her husband behind. It is by far one of the most intense, thought provoking films I've ever watched. Extremely creative, too. (Also, a ton of nudity, just FYI. Everyone is blind and covered in filth -- it's easier for them to walk around mostly naked instead of cleaning clothes. It's not a film for young ones.)

Does anyone go camping? If so, how do you do it? Do you unload next to your car, and set up shop there? Go hiking? Are you a minimalist? What are your favorite spots?

Anyone read any good books lately? I can never seem to get into any new authors. I've always read Tom Clancy, Dean Koonts, and the other basics (HP, LOTR, etc.).

Now that Christmas is over, I have already seen Easter candy out in stores (not joking). What is your favorite all time holiday candy?

My wife is returning home from deployment in Korea!

We’ll be hitting up two Stars games, she’s been watching them in Korea at weird hours.

Also, the Habs fans drive me crazy. I understand that the language is a matter of pride for them but WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THE COACH! AGH!

It’s ONE man. Don’t they want to win?? Clearly management (who knows more about hockey than the fans) think he’s the best man available for the job.

It's pretty cool.

Got to get her third jersey (last year’s) lettered. Think she’s going with Ott.

Well, I started recording stuff yesterday

My “analysis” is pretty basic, but I’m gonna blame it on the fact I’m just starting it. I was going to publish it yesterday, but I need to finish color correcting it and need to put graphics up to make it look “professional,” even though I recorded it on an iPhone in my bedroom lol.

Just finished Silmarillion, again.

Love me some Tolkien. I read Hobbit/LOTR once a year, like Christopher Lee.

As a film major I can recommend some odd one's you may not have seen.

Sorry I missed the discussion of Equilibrium. That a great movie and high on my list. If you like off the wall movies here are some of my picks.

One of my favorite movies of all time takes the number one spot.

1. The Hudsucker Proxy

If you like the Coen Brothers when they are at their oddest and best (O Brother Where Art Thou, The Big Lebowski) then this is one to watch. Romantic comedy, fish out of water story with Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, Jennifer Jason-Leigh, and the incomparable Bruce Campbell. Well worth your time.

2. Dark City

If you’re a sci-fi nerd like me and you haven’t seen this yet then you’re doing yourself a disservice. A city where everyone falls asleep at the same time in the middle of the night wherever they happen to be. Driving, eating dinner, etc, it doesn’t matter they simply fall over. One man is still awake and can’t remember who he is. I highly recommend the Directors Cut if at all possible. It’s strange and it will confuse you but if you like that sort of thing then this one is right up your alley. Rufus Sewell, Jennifer Connelly, Kiefer Sutherland, and William Hurt.

3. The Brothers Bloom

Adrian Brody, Rachel Weisz, and Mark Ruffalo in an off-the-wall adventure comedy about a couple of con-artist brothers and their unbelievably eccentric mark (Rachel Weisz). Directed by Rian Johnson (Brick — another odd movie I would recommend)

I could go on forever so I’m gonna stop there. These are some of my favorites.

Dark City I remember part of.... but not much.

They used to show it on the SciFi all the time when I was a kid.

I’ll have to look into the others.

You should watch Dark City again too.

I think it’s a brilliant concept with great themes and characters. The Directors cut though helps get those across even better than the theatrical version. Great art direction. It’s a real mind-bender which I love.

What? Blasphemer!

You need to go watch the Director’s Cut of that as well. DO NOT watch the theatrical version. Ridley Scott man! I just got done watching the Director’s Cut of Kingdom of Heaven which I already really liked, but is a completely different and better movie with all of Scott’s original content put back in. You would think after being vindicated on Bladerunner, and creating great films like Alien, Black Hawk Down, and Gladiator, that the studio would just stop interfering and let him do his thing.

Well he's hasn't batted 1000 to be sure.

I didn’t see Robin Hood but many of his movies in between his great ones have either been good or pretty good. I didn’t like Hannibal but that was more Julianne Moore’s fault than his. American Gangster was decent. Every now and then though he will come out and do something brilliant. He’s still very capable. Besides Ridley Scott’s return to Alien! How can you not be the teensiest bit excited for that?

Rocky Horror...

to some… … …is a good musical. It is in no way a cinematic classic in the same sense of the term. Its focus is simply on the actors performances and it’s not told any particular way with camera work or the like. You certainly cannot compare it to an absolutely revolutionary film like Bladerunner. There is no common ground on which to stand between those two movies. To do so would just be… … …wrong.

Agreed.

But if they were similar, would they be cult classics? Or just good movies? They get their reputation because they’re so different from any other film out there.

by Tsudbury on Jan 10, 2012 4:19 PM CST up reply actions

See that is the distinction I would make.

I think that Bladerunner is altogether a “classic film”. It’s highly regarded in the film industry as a cinematic achievement in special effects. Rocky Horror I would relegate to just “cult classic,” status. It had an odd following for an odd movie. It’s fun and a lot of people like it, but I don’t know if it was a revolution and bar-raiser like Bladerunner.

Unfortunately neither was at their best while in the theater.

The theatrical version of Bladerunner was terrible. When you have Harrison Ford trying to torpedo the voice-over by deliberately reading them deadpan (because no one that actually knows how to make a good movie wants them in the film) and then you put them in anyway? Unreal. The Director’s Cut is a masterpiece!

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. I found out about them about two years ago, and have been reading them nonstop. I think there are 13 of them so far, and I’d highly recommend giving them a shot.

Well I must say

I quite enjoyed Scott Pilgrim as well. I can’t say I’ve heard about it anytime before the movie though.

As for books I’ve read Harry Potter a billion times over the last few years and actually just started on Lord of the Rings/ the hobbit this fall. I keep falling asleep during those movies so I figured I’d enjoy the movies more once I read the books

As for camping I’ve spent my last 4 summers camping at one spot! Except I get to lead a bunch of kids for a week at a time but its been fantastic for me =) I haven’t done tents or anything lately though… just cabins so who knows if that counts.

If you fall asleep during the movies...

…you’ll have a tough time getting through the books. I love Tolkien, but he had pacing problems.

by Sugaa on Jan 10, 2012 9:01 AM CST up reply actions

Oh, Tolkien can be excruciating at times.

I don’t read a lot of novels but I decided to read Lord of the Rings. By midway through the second book I knew simply to skip over any “song” I came across. There was A LOT of irrelevant singing in that story. He’s like Stanley Kubrick to me. The man was a genius but sometimes it took so long to get where he was going that you just wanted to gouge your eyes out.

Yeah, i skipped over the songs too lol... and I've read it a dozen times.

But the guy invented (literally) and ENTIRE history of Elves, Orcs, Goblins, Men, Dwarves, and Hobbits, as well as creating complete languages for several of them. The guy had every detail of the world in his mind, and so it was merely fulfilling the culture he had envisioned.

That’s great for him, but I still skipped the songs.

Hey now, No hitting below the belt!

I’d say Tolkien executed his story much better than Lucas does when he’s not reigned in by a much better director or a studio. I’m pretty sure Tolkien wouldn’t have gone back into his book and completely changed his characters and feel of the story and then tried to convince everyone that hated it that it was better that way. And then on top of that only release the book with as his new version and try to burn down the previous one. What a jackwagon.

I enjoy the new star wars remakes.

Even as someone who watched the original originals (the very first vhs release from the 80s), I don’t mind the changes.

But that may be because I don’t focus on them. I focus on the plot itself, which is phenomenal.

The new one's had a chance to be good.

They just needed a little less Lucas. Just like the original trilogy. The man cannot write dialogue. ESPECIALLY ROMANTIC DIALOGUE. The best line of the original trilogy was one he didn’t write. Han’s response to Leia’s declaration of love. “I know.” It was changed at the last second by Harrison Ford and the director Irvin Kershner. I mean that’s epic. Lucas’ original dialogue? “I love you too.” How ridiculous. The man needs to be reined in.

To have him write, in essence, a love story with the prequels what a ludicrous proposition. It was too light at times which took away from the emotional investment and the darkness that the films should have been. This should have been and could have been The Godfather. What makes a man, who is trying to be good, go down a path into darkness? Instead we got “meesa being berry berry scared!” Ewan McGregor was the saving grace of all three films. He was brilliant!

He was deliberately trying to appeal to a new generation though...

that was why he went the direction he did. He wanted to involve the next gen the way the older gen was, and he accomplished that.

But yes, his writing is a bit weak at times. Ewan is great, Portman is awesome (though, like you said, her dialogue is not).

I tend to focus on the details behind the story though. The fall of the Jedi and the rise of evil makes the story themselves great. He did a good job in accomplishing that. Now, if it could have been wrtten out in a book a la tolkien or rowling? That would have been unbelievable. But Lucas’ medium is film, so that’s the way it goes.

Well it's just a good thing that dialogue isn't important in film... ... ...

Oh wait… … …I meant it’s one of the most important aspects of any film. Lucas needs someone to tell him that he sucks from time to time. He’s a good producer but a horrible director.

WHAT?!?!?!?

HAN FIRES FIRST TREVOR! HAN FIRES FIRST!!! They changed out Boba Fett’s voice? Adding the horrible Darth Vader, “NOOOOOO” from Revenge of the Sith to the end of Return of the Jedi? CGI cartoon characters ruining any kind of serious tone in the cantina scene and Jabba’s Palace? Obi Wan, just got done describing Mos Eisley as a “wretched hive of scum and villainy”… … …but that cantina band sure is a whole lot of fun. Oh it’s a travesty of epic proportions. Ultimately though, all that would be fine if Lucas would simply do both. You could have your ruined horrible versions that are dumbed down for the whole family and I could have my gritty serious tones and a bounty hunter that is morally questionable and much more interesting and we would all be happy. The thing I have a problem with is that George Lucas says that the movies I still love aren’t “right” and only his new version should be in existence. The guy is a real jerk.

Have you seen the new blu rays? We'll bulletpoint your complaints:

I agree, Han fired first.

Who cares about Boba Fett’s voice? He hardly has any lines anyways. How does it make him more or less menacing to change to VO in a few lines?

The additional “NOOOOO!” is not like that. It’s more of a “NO!” And I actually think it adds to it — especially watching them all as one story, instead of individually (like LOTR)

All of the worlds are supposed to be extremely busy places. That was his original intent. In order to accomplish that, you have to add CGIs to the cantina. The cantina itself is not supposed to be serious and boring. People went there to have a good time. That’s what the CGIs show. They disappear during the more serious notes. Sum and villainy have fun too.

And I agree about having both options available. He should have done that. At least make it an option if you buy the full set. But you can’t really argue that a few CGIs in the cantina ruin the seriousness of the films. The only one that ever had any depth to it was ESB. RoJ is a joke in of itself. You can’t complain about CGIs if you don’t concede Ewoks. (Thank god he lets them blink in this remake.) They’re his vision, you can’t argue with him about the way he wanted the worlds to be. They were always far from perfect, even the originals. The problem is that as time passes, people ignore the imperfections and focus on what they really like. Now they have this idea that the original 3 were absolutely perfect as is, and any change to them whatsoever is horrible.

And, watching them sequentially, ESB has even more depth to it than it had before, knowing the details of Anakin. (And I won’t argue about acting choices. He was terrible.)

Oh man, I just wrote a ton and lost it. Take two.

You and I are going to fundamentally disagree here Trevor. You want to clean up the background? Fine. You want to improve the audio to 5.1? Fine. You want to add deleted scenes? Okay, but the additional Jabba one in New Hope was redundant and poorly executed. IT’S NOT OKAY TO CHANGE A CHARACTERS MORAL CENTER! It’s not okay to mess with the tone of an entire scene. You mean to tell me that fuzzy gremlin playing the harmonica and singing like Louis Armstrong in Jabba’s Palace wasn’t distracting? Annoying? It took away from the movie and it definitely detracts from the feel of that whole scene. Busy places don’t mean campy places. Scum and villainy drink heavily, get in bar fights, and maybe play darts. They don’t do the Electric Slide. They sure as heck don’t drink appletini’s right before they threaten to kill you for minding your own business because they don’t like the look of you.

And Bobba Fett may not have a lot of lines, true. However, I and millions of other fans like me know those lines by heart. We can recite them in our sleep and we remember every single minor inflection and we like it that way. I don’t need the new actors voice. It’s distracting. It also takes away from the scene and the film. The previous delivery was good. Probably better. The change is unnecessary. One of the first things they teach you in film school is how to know when to keep things in your film. The one question you have to ask is, “Does this help and further the story?” None of these changes did that. They are superfluous and distracting. It’s one thing to make a directors cut for a film that the studio destroyed before it was ever released. It’s another thing to take one of the greatest sci-fi genres of all time, one that revolutionized the way film making was done and then decide to “fix it.” It changed the story and in many ways. Some minor changes I don’t mind. Having that wretched excuse for an actor Hayden CGI’d in blue form at the end? I didn’t mind that. But most of the changes weren’t that subtle. Greedo missing at point blank range because you see Han’s head distort like a pretzel to “dodge” the LASER BLAST is bordering on insanity. The changes overall distracted WAY MORE than they added and that took away from the whole story. The story didn’t need changing. They’re not perfect movies. Not many movies are though. I agree the Ewoks were probably the biggest mistake in the original trilogy. Again, Lucas didn’t ask that all important question. Still it doesn’t kill the movie. That certainly doesn’t justify him in making the problem even worse.

If I’m Michael Curtiz, I don’t go back to Casablanca and say “Man that Sam sure wasn’t very good. His acting was so bad and it needs to be changed. It’s amazing anyone even watched the film because his scenes are so bad.” That is a ridiculous notion. The film may be the greatest film of all time. It’s adored by millions upon millions of people. Is it dated? Sure. Does it still stand the test of time though and transcend all that? Absolutely. Now if Michael Curtiz did go back and decided to make Sam into an orange person with fuzzy ears and that talks like a baby then we would all hate him for it. And rightfully so. If he told us all that we were all crazy for thinking that Sam should be anything but an orange fuzzy person who talks like a baby, and that we should all go jump off a cliff we, would hate him even more. And rightfully so.

So we'll agree to disagree. I understand why you don't enjoy the changes. Hell, I'm not even saying I love them. I'm just saying I don't mind them at all.

1. Sucks when you lose a big post. The second is never as well phrased, is it?
2. You shut your mouth about Appletinis. Those are delicious.
3. When you say the extra Jabba scene in A New Hope, do you mean when he is oustide the Falcon, looking for Solo? He always wanted that one, including in the original. But they filmed it with a large man, thinking at the time that Jabba was going to look like Fryer Tuck. By the time they changed their minds, filming was complete.
4. And I actually mind the Hayden CGI at the end (weird that we differ on that opinion, no?) IMO, if you’re going to replace Old Ani with Young Ani, you have to replace Old Obi with Young Obi. You can’t keep the guy in the film just because he was knighted. Do one or the other.

Last thing I’ll say about the changes so we can end this nerd fight — I think the story as a whole is unaffected by them. Especially if you stop comparing it to what you knew as a kid (at least, i was a kid when I saw them). They are still great films, CGI or no. I think if everyone would just stop spending so much time complaining about the changes, they would enjoy the freaking films. You can even consider it 2 different mediums if you like (as we did with the LOTR discussion) — a pre graphics story, and a post graphics story. Both are great in their own way.

Last rebuttal and then you can get in the last word if you wish. :D

1. True. I had a whole thing on the Greedo scene that I forgot about.
2. I’m not saying anything bad about Appletini’s. However, you are not not scum or villainy though right? I’m tellin ya. Hard liquor, fights, and the occasional dart board. That’s it.
3. Again, I’m fine with him adding deleted scenes. That’s different. That being said, it does not further the story. The exact same dialogue is used in the cantina and there’s a reason why it was cut. Not to mention Jabba looks like crap and he’s about 1/3 his size in ROJ. That’s not a deal-breaker for me. Greedo firing first and distorting Han’s head in such a way to insinuate that he DODGED A FREAKIN LASER BLAST because you don’t have the guts to have a character with that level of complexity…that I have a problem with.
4. We don’t see the grown up Anakin at all until the last couple minutes of the final film and we only see his scared head above his upper lip. If you talk about integrating the story from the prequels then changing Anakin to Hayden, who we’ve seen run the gamut of emotions (not well, but we did see it) makes more sense. We had a whole movie and a half of Obi-Wan as an old man. It’s much more established than this random middle aged man that shows up out of the blue…wah wah…and doesn’t seem like he could hurt a fly.

Finally, again my problem isn’t with the new versions existing. I wouldn’t have a word to say about it if I simply had the theatrical versions restored as well. Lucas has outright said he will never restore the theatrical cut. When the special editions came out in theaters I went and saw them with all the new crap they put in there and I didn’t really mind it one bit. However, I never dreamed that they would soon be the only versions available. My problem is the attempt to erase the original theatrical versions from existence. It’s unprecedented. To my knowledge no other director has ever looked at an entire bulk of their fan base which has a very reasonable request and a love for one’s original work, only to then be given the “double deuce” and basically told that they are morons for liking originals in their purest forms. It’s beyond egotistical. It’s no where near the same argument as a different medium. It would be the equivalent of Tolkien commissioning the LOTR films to be made and then, once they were completed, making it his mission in life to go around burning all the copies of his book. It’s just wrong man. Wrong.

We shall agree to disagree though. I’m sure I haven’t convinced you even though you should be. :D

That's why I kept my DVDs after I bought the blu-rays.

You know, the DVDs that had the original theatrical versions as a bonus that came out a few years back? I grew up with these movies (I was 5 when the first came out) and I still remember walking out of the theater after ESB scared that Han was going to be frozen in carbonite forever.

Sometimes I think Lucas forgets he shouldn’t be biting the hand that feeds him. Those of us who grew up with the originals made him. If we hadn’t bought tickets to the movies (usually multiple times), all the toys and other tie-ins, does Lucas really think he would be work a gazillion dollars?

Yeah I have those DVD's as well

it’s a Laserdisc rip but it’s better than not having them. Lucas’ ego just got too big. He started to believe his own hype and he got soft. He stopped surrounding himself with people that would challenge his ideas and instead gathered a bunch of “yes” men. That’s why he’s ruining so many things. You lose perspective when you lose the ability to collaborate. When you think you’ve arrived you think you can do no wrong and then that’s exactly what you wind up doing.

I read once year Hobbitt/LOTR. I also see LOTR as a one book. In Europe it is. But in states they published it in three books and since it was a big hit… Well the rest is history. =)

Books simply cannot be compared to movies

it’s an unfair comparison like you say. Books have 400 to thousands of pages. Movies have 90 to 180 at most and that’s in a screenplay format.

It's a different medium

You can appreciate both and love both. However if you read a book and you love it you can’t expect the movie to live up to the same expectations. You have to adjust your view of the material. I did the same thing with LOTR. As a film major I knew it COULD NOT be the same. It’s an impossibility. If you let go of your own investment in the material and try to see this as a new vision of it then you can appreciate both for what they are. They’re both incredibly done stories in their respective mediums.

I try to look at them as an "interpretation" of the books.

Camping is camping. It always counts.

My friends and I have a hybrid for of “taking it easy.” We pack out to some waterfalls several miles from where we park the car. But we also carry a cooler for beer and liquor.

One time we went camping, and It took me 2 trips to the camping site. My first trip was to drop off all my camping gear and chair (65lb pack). The second trip, I reloaded my backpack with 48 beers, 50 cigars, 4 fifths, and carried a cooler of ice.

I left the camping trip with a backpack full of camping gear, an empty cooler, and 8 cigars.

Every time one of the 9 ask a group for help in the films, they always answer “nahhhhh.” but then change their minds at the last second and save the day. Every. Single. Time.

Best example of that is the Ents. Takes them a day just to say hello. And then in the movie they decide not to go to war (lol wut) after weeks of discussion. But then one quick “Hoom-Boom,” and every Ent assembles and they have a battle plan formed? Are you kidding?

I have, for the most part, not had a problem with what was left out of the HP movies, with one exception.

My favorite book is Prisoner of Azkaban, because the end is such a shock. Right up until they are all in the Shrieking Shack, there is no hint that it is Peter Pettigrew that is the villain, not Sirius. I still remember the first time I read the book for that reason. Jo really did a great job keeping it a surprise until the end.

The movie gave it away halfway through when Harry says he saw Peter on the Mauraders’ Map. Plus, I would have liked to have seen the backstory on the mauraders and what happened to Snape – it would have added a lot to Snape’s character to know why he hated James, Sirius, et all (aside from the revelation about Lily in HP7).

Speaking of HP, the following is a true story – I was in England for almost the entire summer of 97, when the original book came out. I remember seeing it in a bookstore, because the cover of the English edition is rather distinctive (the bold colors of those editions really make them stand out). I'm going to do you the biggest favor in your whole life and tell you that you need to make some time for Mass Effect.

I feel you completely on not having time. I also have very little for games. That’s why I’m so picky. I only buy the highest rated one’s that I know are worth the precious little time I have to play. Even then I have some games that I bought that are sitting and I’ve yet to even crack the case. I’m lucky if I can play two hours in a week. Still, it doesn’t matter how long it takes you to finish the game, Mass Effect is well worth it. It’s like playing a movie. It is unbelievably good. I promise you, it’s a worthwhile investment.

I'm sorry...

But I can’t take the Wii seriously when you miss out on games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption and Skyrim. You can keep Zelda compared to those games. Mass Effect 2 is the greatest game I have ever played and the story and execution is one of the most amazing entertainment experiences I’ve ever witnessed. The Wii is a great machine and great for families but, IMHO, it’s not enough on it’s own. If you have the Wii AND an Xbox or PS3 that makes sense but it’s just not robust enough of a system by itself and doesn’t have enough serious titles in order to keep my interest.

Don't be.

Mass Effect2 is work of guys that were once doing BGII, there are even some hints of that in that game.

Skyrim was nice, but I liked it better in PC. I don’t like it when I don’t have mouse+keybord involved.

Nintendo is it’s own world and Wii was a risk. Now they know it made some money and can finally start making a new one.
As I said, other games I can play in PC and then there are those few I can play in Nintendo.

by Henri Muroke on Jan 11, 2012 10:50 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah I guess you're a PC gamer too so at least you can still play the others.

I could never do that. Before I got the first Xbox I would play RTS games on my PC and I liked those. However clicking on a map and building bases made sense to me with a mouse and keyboard. But I could never get the idea of the FPS on PC. I bought Halo for the PC and tried to play online and pretty much got rocked every time. I could never get used to aiming with the mouse. I never got it down. The only matches I was good at were CTF because I didn’t have to try and shoot anyone using the mouse. I don’t know how you do it. After that I finally bought an Xbox and got A LOT better at Halo.

You just need to practice. :D

The 360 controller is the best one out there. It’s designed really well. It’s just a tough transition between PC and Consoles when you’ve played all your life on one or the other. I’ve had a console since a kid and just learned on consoles as they progressed. NES, SNES, N64, XBOX, and now 360. Like I said, I had RTS games like Command and Conquer on the PC but after a while they would just be a huge time suck and I just wasn’t getting much out of them so I stopped and moved over exclusively to the 360. Story is a big deal to me now so Bioshock and Mass Effect are just epic. I think the pinnacle of the RTS though was Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun. The one where they actually got James Earl Jones and Michael Biehn to do the cut scenes! Pretty freakin’ awesome.

Heh, fair enough.

I still like to build my own PC, so my money goes that way. And yes, I play with it, a lot. Nintendo is more for my girlfriend and multiplay. Then again… Games like Zelda and Metroid Prime are good reasons to loose your sleep.

I can’t play with console, I just suck at it. The failure here is me, not the console. =)

I did buy the Orange box and I started trying to play Half Life 2 but it just didn’t hold my interest. I think I came to it too late. It’s tough to play games like Bioshock and Halo Reach and then come back to Half Life. Maybe that’s lame but I just can’t do it. Those other new games have just spoiled me.

Well, you know when we were flirting with a PC vs. Mac discussion?

I would be one of those Mac guys. I’m not militant about it like many Mac users. I hate how pretentious Mac is and I want to punch every person wearing a “genius” shirt in the face. I do still have a PC but it is several years old and does not work very well at all. I’m a video guy though and I learned all my editing in Final Cut Pro so over the years I’ve gradually switched over. I do prefer it now over the PC. I love it and I don’t think I’ll be going back anytime soon. I have an iPhone now and everything. It’s crazy!

See I'm the opposite

If a game is too big I can sometimes have trouble keeping my interest. I played Fallout 3 for a long time and I got side tracked so much by all the side quests that I only got about halfway through the story. It’s still sitting in my cabinet because the task to complete it is just too daunting. I’m just hoping and praying I can stick with Skyrim long enough to finish the story before Mass Effect 3 comes out.

by EagleBelf on Jan 12, 2012 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

Well, the the "quests" in FFVII are a bit different.

They aren’t really side quests. Most of it occurs naturally in the game. Like most RPGs, you get stronger the more battles you face. In the normal course of the game (with minimal exploration) you gather strength fast enough to complete the game, so the side items aren’t necessary.

The level 4 limit breaks are the ultimate “special” attacks that characters have. Some are obtained as the plot unfolds, and some you have to look for if you want them. Likewise, there are a couple of extra characters that you can choose to add to your party, but the game is complete without them. (Of course, if you DO get them, you get additional story lines, and more details behind the basic plot itself.) Running through the game itself probably takes about 60 hours, but it moves pretty quickly. Each “chapter” (segments of the plot?) usually lasts an hour or two.

by Henri Muroke on Jan 12, 2012 3:10 PM CST up reply actions

I mean I really liked the gameplay

My problem with Bethesda is that I don’t feel they compel you enough to actually move through the story campaign. That’s the difference with that game and a game like Mass Effect. I would do side missions and some of them would be absolutely awesome but I would do some of them and then WANT to get back to the main story. Probably because everytime I did a story mission I was just sucked deeper into it and loved it even more. Bethesda story missions just seem like any other quest.

Words of wisdom.

My problems with Fallout 3 were with story… You always go to a place and he just left it. Finally you find what you are looking for and… Boom, he is dead…

First two had better story, better side quests and really cool humor, a really dark humor.

Third is okay, but after first play, all the best thing are done. I like games you can play over and over.

Mass Effects are better in that category.

I'm also big into the overarching plot of the games themselves...

from the beginning incident to everything that happens in the stories… they let you choose how involved you want to be in the plot. (I’ve also toyed around on blogs, discussing hidden meanings to things found in the game)

Even the portal games intertwine with the Half Life games, which I thought was a nice touch.
