Week of 1-23 OT Thread - I'm Just Writing Words To Make This Stick Out

Hello everybody. I am in the process of recording my second segment of "Graham's Week in Review." I am taking a brief break to write this out.

The last two OT Threads have really taken off. This makes me happy. It took it a while, but now it appears that the OT Threads have finally become a place for the regulars, and anybody else who wants to participate, to discuss whatever they desire. Whether it be Star Wars vs. Star Trek, Mac Vs. PC, iPhone vs. Android, or whatever, the the threads are fun.

If you all want to see my segment when it's done, let me know. It probably won't be finished until later this evening. If you watch it, feedback will be greatly appreciated.

And now, I have to get back to work before my afternoon class. I am trying to finish the recording process before I edit it all together. I still need to finish my opener, which I hope will be awesome.

Have a good rest of the week.

So, I like my iPhone 4S...a lot

It’s actually what I am using to record the video of my show (I’m recording the audio from a separate source, because I like professional sound).
Okay…back to work.

I like my iphone ok.

No way I’d ever get an android phone. They’re so glitchy and they crash a lot.

Really? I switched from iphone to a droid (HTC Inspire), and haven't had a single problem.

My iphone was always locking up, dropping calls, and freezing for minutes at a time when I opened the map function. (nothing like needing directions to a place, then having to pull over and wait 2 minutes so i can type in my destination) My wife, on the other hand, has had hers crash every now and then. But I’m the one downloading and using apps all the time, so go figure.

I don’t think it matters what brand, it’s going to have its own problems.

I keep hearing good things about windows phones.

So I may give one a try.

Yeah I haven't had any problems with my iPhone 4S.

Granted I haven’t had it too long. I had a Droid and my wife has the Droid 2 and both have had major problems after about six months. My Droid had the famous 256MB internal memory that was not upgradable. So basically once I had any apps on my phone it locked up and you couldn’t do anything. So I streamlined my apps but even the system itself has updates from time to time and it eventually overwhelmed the phones memory just with basic operating system updates. By a year in I couldn’t even use my navigation. It wouldn’t even load. That’s why I switched. I’m sure I’ll have some issues on the iPhone at some point but I’m much happier with it.

iPhones

work well but are boring. Android all the way.

Riiiiight.

Because having an operating system that works and enough memory to actually run the phone is super boring. :D

Well,

my OS works and I have a lot of memory, 1gb..and it’s more than just a bunch of icons on my screen..

While I am happy for you

My experience was completely different. :D That’s the thing, there are a million different android devices now. I’m sure some of them work. My iPhone works where as my Droid did not. Different strokes for different folks.

That's why I like it better. =)

Actually I have nothing against iPhone, I just don’t like the cult of iPhone.

It seems that you use your phone like you should, these guys just use ring/text ability and “love” the idea of owning iPhone. =)

iPhone 4S is where it's at. Siri is pretty amazing.

She doesn’t bat a thousand, but the voice recognition and common language usage for so many everyday functions like dictating emails and texts is pretty freakin cool.

Lightning is Loud

So, my house got struck by lightning two weeks ago tonight. Luckily my stove, fridges, washer/dryer and dishwasher are ok and there’s not a lot of damage to the house. But it fried almost all of my electronics including pool timer and sprinkler control panel. This is my 14th day with no TVs, no PCs, no stereos, no microwave and no garage door opener. Hopefully insurance will get their heads out of their @$$ sometime soon and pony up for new toys.

In the meantime, I’m curious. What would YOU do without all of these things?

Oh man is thunder ever loud

There was one clap of thunder so loud I literally bounced about six inches off of my cot I was so startled by it. We were convinced that lightning struck the flag pole about 80 yards from us.
Now, I don’t know if that is actually true/survivable from that radius, and if anybody can provide me with some actual data, maybe I will be able to gauge more accurately where the lightning struck near us.

by DFWTrojanTuba on Jan 23, 2012 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

Lightning is unpredictable on how it will effect things.

If the flagpole was metal, it may have made a loud noise, but been okay. Trees usually burst or crack though. And you can be inches from a lightning bolt and never know it. They don’t all make thunder, and they’re not all big. But that doesn’t make those small ones any less deadly. I still remember lightning striking a storm door that my hand was literally 2 inches away from.

antenna

It hit an antenna on my roof, in a straight line maybe 30 feet from my bed. Pictures knocked off walls, cracked drywall, power outlets blown out of their boxes, all kinds of small damage.
It flipped about 7 or 8 breakers. When I turned them back on, stuff came on upstairs because the jolt physically flipped switches. I know I didn’t go to sleep with the garbage disposal on. LOL.

You built an AR 15? That's awesome!

AK is pretty awesome as well. We don’t seem to have many good rifle ranges around here in Nashville that I know of. Granted I’m just staring out. There’s one out by the state park but it’s run by the state and it just takes way too long to get out there and actually shoot. You have to wait in a long line just to get the ticket for the range and then you have to go through their booth (only two at a time) and have their gun guy check your weapon to make sure it’s not loaded. Then you have to report and check in with a different guy who is the actual range marshal. Then they watch you like a hawk the whole time like you’re a four year old. I have a nice indoor range I go to which is much better. Much more helpful people and not condescending. Maybe I’ll graduate to rifles eventually and try find a better option.

I just got my first pistol. It’s a Jericho 941, which I have to say is pretty freakin’ amazing.

I live in plano and we have bullet trap which sucks they show no respect to people under 21.

then theres an outdoor range in garland that is fantastic.
and yeah I dropped about 800 and built a ar from the ground up if i bought one from say bushmaster it would be 2 grand plus and its the same grade materials and parts. you save alot if you buy the parts yourself learn a bit and just build it yourself.
wow that really sounds like a pain and no fun. I think pistols can be more fun to shoot but my immediate family owns about 26 guns so im buying ones they dont already own.

Nice choice, I’ve heard alot of good things about those. what caliber did you get?
I got a S&W M&P .45 in september its my car gun atm. then I also bought a kel-tec sub 2000. Its an awesome cheap little folding gun, reliable, and it takes glock mags so I have a 33 round 9mm mag in mine lol its so fun.

Customer service is key as usual.

That’s pretty cool. I don’t know that I have the aptitude to build an assault rifle. Maybe someday. Yeah I enjoy pistol shooting. I haven’t done much rifle shooting. Once I have a couple pistols I’ll probably look into some other options.

I love the Jericho. I heard nothing but good things about it as well and they were right on. I got the 9mm so I could get the 15 round clip and overall less expensive ammo. It’s heavy because it’s solid steel but it feels great. Not a CC gun but for home defense and the range it’s awesome. It’s very accurate as well.

I like the S&W M&P. They have a .40 rental at the range I go to and it was certainly one of the better guns they had to shoot. That and an old Sig 226 9mm which was probably my favorite. Dang. A .45 is serious. I still haven’t gotten used to going that heavy of a caliber. My buddy has a Ruger .45 and that was pretty crazy. The Kel-Tec sounds like A LOT of fun. That’s pretty awesome. Not a huge fan of the glock mags just because the one’s I’ve used are pretty difficult to load but in that gun I think it would probably be well worth it.

theres nothing wrong with a heavy gun

my favorite 9mm’s are by CZ and they are heavy and steel but so smooth and accurate.
but yeah Gun building can make one insane. for instance right now i was trying to instal a pivot pin on my AR and to do that i have to put in a spring then insert a tiny half a cenimeter pin on top of that. hold those down and insert the pivot pin. so basically i push the pin in with needle nose pliers, then get a skinny allen wrench to get the tiny pin flush so i can puch the big pin over it. all this only for it to slip from under the allen wrench and launch itself into oblivion. I’ve spent hours loking for a pin smaller then a centimeter and now have to order another one. It’s worth it once your done but it’s a hell of a ride.

My family owns a s&w 500 so im used to heavy calibers lol
I’m not a fan of glock in general but they make the highest capacity mags aso thats the only reason I use them. I dont like the way their guns shoot though.

Yeah I've always seen the CZ's rated well.

I’m not a fan of Glock either. I don’t know why so many people seem to like them. I know they’re easy because the safety being build into the trigger. I just don’t like the pre-set trigger because it’s just too much of a pull to me. It feels too much like double action and when proper trigger pull is so crucial to the aim of your shot I’d just much rather have a single action. And as I said before the mags are really tough to load. I’ve been much more accurate with…well just about anything.

I have a odd question.

I’m planning on doing historical presentation of police. My class is about Finnish police 1930-2010. Things of Finnish police are all in this class, no need to do anything from that topic and that’s why I would love to do presentation of Dallas/Texas police.

The history from 1845 to 2012. Also something from times of your independence, times with Mexico and Spain. But those things would only be a small part of it. Main idea would be your police force. How it was born and how it has developed in your state.

I have 2-3 weeks? Is it impossible to do it? I have to get my material from internet mostly.

Not a problem if I have to get another topic, but this one would be cool. And I bet it would be a new one to my student friends.

I also have five other classes, so this period will kill me anyway. Students – myself – are stupid some times.

That would be an interesting topic.

But other than wikipedia and the dallas police website, I wouldn’t be able to tell you where to look.
