Trade deadline targets

After giving the Stars current situation a lot of thought, I have come up with two names that I think Nieuwy should target at the trade deadline. Both players would be able to be part of the core group moving forward (assuming Nieuwy would re-sign them after their current contracts are up) because they are still relatively young. Additionally, these two guys are struggling somewhat and play for teams that have been struggling all season...

I'm talking about Derek Roy and Paul Stastny.

Both players are centers, which is beneficial because Ribiero isn't getting any younger and (IMHO) Benn needs to be moved back to wing. Both players have manageable cap hits - Roy's is $4m while Stastny's is $6.6m (personal note: I believe that Colorado overvalued Stastny - he should have been signed to a contract similar to Roy's). By way of point production both players are in the same range as Ribs - they are capable of putting up somewhere between 60 and 80 points-per-season.

Now, to be clear about my position and thinking - In considering a trade for either Roy or Stastny, I view it as a move to continue creating a core group to build around. As constructed, the Stars are heavy on veteran players and don't have the prospects to replace them as they retire. Nieuwy is not in an enviable position, and I would have to say that center is our weakest position - a trade is going to have to be made at some point lest we continue with depth issues for a few more seasons.

I'd be happy

to have either but how would we get them? What assets do we have to pry them away outside of Benn and Eriksson?

by StarzenheimerSchmidt on Jan 23, 2012 11:34 AM CST reply actions

Benn or Eriksson would be an overpayment for either player...

Buffalo needs… just about everything. They’re a pretty dismal team. I would honestly say that the position they’re most solid at would be goaltending. Miller is having an off year (which seems to happen every other year), and Enroth is a pretty solid backup. Enroth may make a solid starter someday too.

I have no idea what would appeal to Colorado… If I read the team correctly, they’re set up fairly well in the top-6… they need some depth scoring. Their defense also seems suspect to me. The trade for EJ is one that they’ll probably regret for a few more seasons. I would also imagine that they’d like to have some picks sent their way due to the Varlamov trade.

So, by way of tradable assets…

The long and short would be everyone except Eriksson, Benn, Kari, Goose, Larsen (though I’d entertain the idea), Ott, and Ribs.

But, specifically:

Morrow – Fairly reliable 20 goal scorer, 2-time 30 goal scorer. Provides veteran leadership, grit, and hard nosed play.

Vincour – Up and coming capable two-way player. Has had success in the AHL, still trying to put it together at the NHL level.

Robidas – Solid second pairing d-man. Provides veteran leadership, plays a dritty, hard nosed style. Tough as nails. Given style of play, not prone to injuries.

Grossman – Good second or third pairing d-man. Plays a pretty good stay at home game.

Fistric – A more physical Grossman.

And just about anyone down in Austin or still playing in Europe.

They

seem to be in a similar position as Dallas. If we’re getting rid of Morrow, why do they want him? Same with Robidas. Any scenarios? Who would be added to any of the guys above to get Stastny. I’d love to have him. Roy might be easier to land. Something around Morrow maybe. They’d probably be more willing to take on a vet hoping he pushes them over the top.

The point in targeting players

Like Roy or Stastny is two fold…

One: The player is struggling or being eclipsed by younger players.

Two: The team is struggling and needs to improve.

In Stastny you have a player who plays on a struggling team and has a somewhat burdensome contract – honestly, anything over $6m for him is the team over-valuing the player. Last season Stastny’s numbers took a hit, and he looks to repeat a below average season. Additionally, I get the sense that he is somewhat dissatisfied by his being eclipsed by Duchene and being passed over for the captaincy…

In Roy you have an adequately valued (or perhaps undervalued) player who is playing on a struggling team. Statistically speaking, he’s on pace for his worst non-injury shortened season.

So, as I was saying earlier, the point in targeting these two players is an attempt to take advantage of poor situations in Buffalo or Colorado.

Have there been any talks about them wanting to trade Stastny?

I've heard it mentioned

By a few different people. Given that I’m not connected to anyone in the hockey world in any way, I cannot verify or say whether or not they’re good/valid/reliable sources…

But I have seen Dater comment on trade ruminations (all of them were from last season – I haven’t seen him make any prognostications for this season) and heard the Avs broadcast crew (this season) mention the possibility trading him.

The reasons that always get mentioned: big salary ($6.6m) for a few more years and the possibility that Joey Hishon makes that jump make the jump soon. I don’t think Hishon is going to make the jump this season (he’s on IR at the moment) – but I do think he’ll be NHL ready soon.

i think we should be targeting a guy like Frans Nielsen

while id be ecstatic with Nielsen in a Dallas jersey, im talking about players that fit his profile: young, shows a good amount of talent, potential to get better, underrated.

much like Goligoski was last year when we traded for him

by Long Island on Jan 23, 2012 12:52 PM CST reply actions

Don't know

a ton about him but he’s almost 28 and averages 30-40 points a season. Not like there’s untapped upside with him going by stats. And he’s on pace for his worst NHL season right now. Looks like a career bottom six guy to me.

by StarzenheimerSchmidt on Jan 23, 2012 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

he plays a shutdown role for the isles

and still manages to stay above -10, thats nothing to scoff at. if you ever get to watch his play he makes plenty of good passes and has really good hands. hes been underrated his whole career, and hes from denmark, DENMARK!!!

by Long Island on Jan 23, 2012 1:31 PM CST up reply actions

forgot to add

he has more of an upside than Statsny and roy

by Long Island on Jan 23, 2012 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

p.s.s.

what stats are you reading???? hes on pace to be about a point or two shy of last season

by Long Island on Jan 23, 2012 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

it's p.p.s.

P.S. stands for post script. So an additional addendum would be a post post script. Not a post script script.

No,

they are all about the same age, while Stastny and Roy have both had many seasons better than any of Nielsen’s. And why would a guy about to turn 28 have upside that hasn’t been reached yet?

As for stats, he’s on pace to average less than .5 ppg this season. Every other outside his 16 game rookie season he’s averaged .5 or more per season.

by StarzenheimerSchmidt on Jan 23, 2012 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

I just don't see Buffalo trading a player like Roy.

The issue is that I don’t think that wants to blow up their squad, and trading Roy would set those events in motion. If you trade him, your first line center is Ville Leino, and no one wants that. Also, You’d be set on building a franchise around Leino, Enroth (getting the feeling Miller’s days there are numbered, resembles the Belfour situation for us back in 01-02), Vanek, Myers (who has really tapered off in Buffalo), and the players you get for Roy and whomever else you trade. I think the Sabres are going to go the same route Dallas did starting in 08- rebuild on the fly. I’d love to have Roy though.

I said this a couple weeks ago- Dallas may kick the tires on Jussi from Carolina. There are a few reasons for this. One is that Carolina is perfectly capable of rebuilding around Jeff Skinner, and possibly Cam Ward. Another reason is team need. While Jussi isn’t a true #1 center like say Stastny or Backstrom, he can create a situation where Dallas has a line 1A and line 1B in Benn-Jokinen-Eriksson and Morrow-Ribeiro-Ryder. With linemates like Loui and Jamie, I’m sure he could be a 55-60 points a year guy for us. Lastly, and as cheap of a reason as this is, getting Jussi back will put a few more butts in seats. If memory serves me correctly, Jokinen was a fan favorite in his short time in dallas- hell, the guy had his own chant in the national anthem! I’m not quite sure what we’d have to give up for him (probably Larsen or Vincour to start), but I’d love to see him back in a Dallas uniform.

2012 UFA's

I looked on capgeek at the 2012 UFA list and a few names caught my eye that maybe we could pick up cheaper because they are UFA:
-Zach Parise (Won’t be cheap, but a great offensive player)
-Ryan Suter (Rock solid defenceman)
-Mikhail Grabovski (Would be a solid #2 C)
-Tuomo Ruutu (Powerforward winger)
-Frans Nielson (Defensive specialist would be a great #3 C)
-Johnny Boychuk (Solid Dman with good point shot)
-PA Parenteau (Could be a 2nd/3rd line winger who puts up points)
-Antero Niittymaki (Always liked Niittymaki could be a great backup if Bachman needs more time)

by KBreezy on Jan 23, 2012 7:15 PM CST reply actions

I like

Parise
Suter
Ruutu

are my top 3.

Suter would be at the top of my wish list. #1 dmen don’t grow on trees and I can’t see how else we could acquire one.

Grabovski maybe. On a 30 goal pace..not much of a setup man though.

Nielson would probably be an upgrade on the third line over Fiddler. A little more offense.

Parenteau I like, depends on other roster decisions he might be Ok.

Boychuk, maybe the best thing is he’s a right shot.

by StarzenheimerSchmidt on Jan 23, 2012 7:37 PM CST reply actions

Ruutu would be good.

We have Fiddler signed for a few yrs so I guess if we picked up Nielson could be the 3rd line C and Fiddler the 4th line C. That’s some good depth.

"The Dallas Cowboys announced they have released Jerry Jones."

by T-rom on Jan 24, 2012 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

Yep

exactly my thoughts. I really like Fiddler, but If he was playing for, oh, Chicago, Boston, Vancouver, etc…he’d be a 4th line center. And that’s what we aspire to.

by StarzenheimerSchmidt on Jan 24, 2012 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

Oh,

and Ruutu would just be a good fit who can play any forward position, score 20 goals, add grit.

by StarzenheimerSchmidt on Jan 24, 2012 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

The only way I would accept Ruutu in Dallas

Is if the fans don’t continue the Carolina tradition of calling him Roo.

Worst. Name. Ever.

We could call him the Finnish way.

“Jakke”.

Would be funny to see a guy in Dallas, who once played streethockey with me.
We were 10 years old.

Trevor Daley is my cup of tea.

by Henri Muroke on Jan 25, 2012 7:59 AM CST up reply actions

Stastny would put more butts in the seats.

He might find more success between Benn and Eriksson too. I think he’d like the change of scenery just fine if he got to skate with those two guys every night. If they’re looking to dump his salary, taking an expiring contract or two from us along with a prospect/pick might suit them just fine. I’d like to see Stastny here.

Obviously we’d all like to see Parise and Suter, but I have to say I definitely agree about Frans Nielsen. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Stars uniform. Jussi would be nice to have back too, but I don’t think they’ll go after him.

by Travis Drybread on Jan 23, 2012 9:18 PM CST reply actions

Stars need, and can afford to sign a superstar.

Neither Roy, nor Stasny are it.
Parise fits the bill, but… @ what price?

by iHorses on Jan 23, 2012 9:36 PM CST reply actions

Stastny isn't a star?

His lastname is Stastny! An off year, but he’s got lots of skill to return to the form of last year. Love to have him, but doubt it’s possible.

by Chris Barnard on Jan 23, 2012 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

I agree. The name certainly helps but,

he is a good player. He’ll likely come cheaper in trade than Parise will, without the risk of him leaving at the end of the year. That, of course, is contingent on the Avs wanting to ship him somewhere, which is unlikely.

Parise does fit the bill as well, and I’d love to have him, but Stastny is probably more easily obtained, not to mention he won’t cost $7 to 9 million a year.

by Travis Drybread on Jan 24, 2012 7:57 AM CST up reply actions

Not sure

Stastny could come cheaper since he’s NOT an impending UFA it should cost us more.

Parise isn’t having THAT much better a season offensively than Stastny, and Stastny actually has a higher career PPG average than Parise.

by StarzenheimerSchmidt on Jan 24, 2012 11:22 AM CST up reply actions

The Stars still need a center

And unless Parise can play center… I’m not sure I’d waste time on him. Same with Nash. Would I love to have them in Dallas? Absolutely! Do we NEED them in Dallas? Not as much as we need a center.

Carpe diem!

by dmoore44 on Jan 24, 2012 11:27 AM CST up reply actions

Well

I was singing the praises of a center in the post you replied to.

by StarzenheimerSchmidt on Jan 24, 2012 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

I guess I could see that

I was looking at it from the “not as many teams will be inquiring about him and boosting his value” angle.

And ya, assuming that they’re shopping him, it’d probably cost us Larsen and a pick at the very least, assuming they want Larsen.

by Travis Drybread on Jan 24, 2012 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

neither of them

are anywhere near young enough

by Hillbutton on Jan 23, 2012 11:27 PM CST reply actions

Roy is 28 (will be 29 later this year) and Stastny is 26… We were talking about Richards being a part of our core going forward and he’s 30+ now…

by dmoore44 on Jan 24, 2012 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

Stastny is just about to hit his prime years

just like Goligoski.

Stastny in his prime with Benn and Eriksson on his wings is a line I wouldn’t want to play against.

by Travis Drybread on Jan 24, 2012 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

I have dreams of a Suter/Larsen D-pair for the Stars

by KBreezy on Jan 24, 2012 2:19 AM CST reply actions

I like the sound of that.

I have a similar dream but it is a D-pair of Goligoski/Weber

by Traptors on Jan 24, 2012 11:26 AM CST reply actions

I'm not sure

how much I like the idea of two clear cut #1 dmen being paired with guys who aren’t even close to top pairing caliber players. I hope Larsen ends up there. Goligoski isn’t. I’d like to sign Suter and somehow acquire a solid right shot defenseman like, say, Luke Schenn to play with him.

by StarzenheimerSchmidt on Jan 24, 2012 11:36 AM CST up reply actions

You obviously aren't much of a fan

If you think goligoski isnt going to be a top defenceman for us. Hes an offensive puck moving defenceman. If you paired him with a big defensive guy that I know the stars are definitely looking to aquire that would be one hell of a combination.

by Traptors on Jan 24, 2012 11:50 AM CST reply actions

Much of a fan of the team or Goligoski?

He is a good offensive guy who isn’t that good defensively, at least not this year. If the game is on the line and you’re up by a goal at the end, you want a guy like Suter on the ice. You don’t necessarily want Goose out there(if you have better options). He is what he is, a second pairing PMD. Nothing wrong with that. If you want to dream and have the Stars as a contender you want a guy like Suter with another shutdown guy and Goose in a second pairing and you have the makings of a good defensive corps.

by StarzenheimerSchmidt on Jan 24, 2012 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

I'll add two more names to the list...

Derick Brassard and Patrik Berglund.

Berglund puts up around 40 points per season and is signed to until 2012-2013 for a cap hit of $2.25m. He’s not as defensively responsible as Eriksson or Benn, but I think our team structure would make up for that shortfall. I tend to think that he’s underutilized in St. Louis, and that he might fit in well in Dallas. He’s 23, so he’ll have time to grow with Eriksson and Benn.

Brassard has comparable numbers to Berglund (a little lower actually) and makes a little more (a cap hit of $3.2m) and is signed until 2013-2014. From what I’ve seen, Brassard is definitely not a defensively minded forward… But like Berglund, I think if you give him the right line mates, that flaw can be overcome. Brassard has shown flashes of skill – and until he decided to engage James Neal was talked about as a Calder Trophy candidate (he led NHL rookies). I’m not sure the BJs are willing to give up on him just yet… but Brassard hasn’t seemed to reacclimate well after returning from his injury. All that said, if the Stars wind up attempting to make a move for him, he does have talent and could be another successful reclamation project.

Suter announced that he won't sign an extension before the deadline.

I’m not sure if this is a good thing (as far as trades go) considering we’re not exactly the contending team that he I’m sure he hopes he ends up with.

If he’s not coming to us, I hope he stays with Nashville til the end of the year.
