I think he can grow into the defensive responsibility.
And if you move him up and give him more offensive responsibility, that’ll only encourage him to learn to do that, I would think.

Should be interesting.
I know seasons aren’t made or broken in single games in January, and that we are not officially eliminated from the playoffs with a loss tonight. But this is the team we are most directly competing against for the 8th spot, and given the 4 game loss streak, this game is about as must win as they come, IMO.
This is a big one.
Do they simply settle for being ‘not good enough’ and coast to the probable 10-11th place finish, or do they decide they actually give a crap about the season and fight for more?
I just opened a bottle of wine.

I don't think so.
He took a first-year team in the AHL to the Calder Cup Finals. Although, I think Jamie Benn helped out quite a bit

Time will tell.
I think this the biggest test the team has faced this season, in terms of life or death for the playoffs. I’m really curious to see how they respond.
Yes, he called them out last night, but it’s the only time all season he has. Much of the time he’s been the same sorta ho hum we tried it just work out but cookies and punch for everyone type of coach that Crawford was.
That inability to get players to respond in times of adversity cost Crow his job. I’d like to say Gully is better, but the jury is still out IMO.

With what he’s been through the last few months plus being diagnosed with lung cancer, it’s not really a surprise that he would go downhill fast

Stars D-pairs are: Grossman-Daley, Souray-Robidas, Goligoski-Larsen… Mark Fistric and Adam Pardy are healthy scratches.
I wouldn't have scratched fistric, he's been playing well
i suppose Larsen adds a little more offence though which is what we’re desperate for
Fistric doesn't really do much.
Larsen can give you some special teams value.

Knee injuries can take a big toll on confidence and conditioning, especially if its your first major one.

just link to other people’s stories now. How many news organizations are out there that don’t actually have reporters?
CBS does
But the problem is this – if you don’t get it up first, people kvetch, you lose hits, you look out of touch. So if it’s a place you trust, you link to the report while trying to verify it.
It’s a no-win situation, especially when first-hand sources like players end up being wrong.

Nah
Even struggling some, he’s still a better NHL player than Woywitka. Edmonton thought he had negative NHL value. He’s not what he once was, obviously, but he’s still servicable, especially when his foot isn’t recently busted

He has no value offensively, and they don't trust him defensively.
He also plays no special teams minutes for a poor defensive team. I don’t see the appeal.

Yup
Had it on her face (in eyeblack or something, I assume).
Her prognosis is better than his (I think she had spinal shock but not a broken back), but it’s still a super scary and expensive incident that deserves some support.
Heck, they were on the same floor in the same hospital and have talked to each other a bit about it.

dislocated his spine, had multiple fractures, and significant ligament disruptions and that doctors say it’s very unlikely he’ll walk or have use of his hands ever again.

If it’s a true spinal dislocation, then it’s very unlikely he’ll recover anything except function at or above the level of the original injury (I think I read he had some forearm movement and triceps).

When he was first injured, they didn't know the full extent because of swelling
It was several days later that they were able to determine that the cord was severed

When, in the opinion of the Referee that, specific personnel changes have be made by one or both teams late in a game and ultimately an altercation ensues, the appropriate penalties are to be assessed and the incident reported to the Commissioner immediately following the game for review and possible supplementary discipline under Rule 28.

Misconducts with fights are only for instigators, and the change to the fighting rules a few years ago were that instigators in the final five minutes have some extra post-game discipline.
You can get some extra stuff from the league if the refs think someone was put out there specifically to fight. But nothing else, really.

we have known the entire season this team would be scrapping to slide into the 8th seed.

Yeah
Some of that is this team seems to ride a bubble like no other. If the confidence is there, it’s awesome. When it goes away, it’s terrible.
I do think they have the ability to reel off 11-3 at another point in the season. But they kind of are what I thought they were – in a dogfight for the final playoff spot when remaining healthy.

they haven’t played Vancouver at all yet. Nor Calgary. Those two teams KILLED us last year. They still have several games left with the Sharks. 2 with Chicago.

This isn't the time or place.
I think they projected too much with the picks. You want ceiling, but at the same time the players have to have a decent chance of reaching the ceiling for it to be worth anything. The top picks have a long way to go to reach the potential assigned to them, and it likely won’t happen.

Isn’t necessarily the answer, as well. We’ve seen with the Oilers and Blue Jackets that if you bring in young talent to a group with a losing attitude, all you’ll do is continue to lose and lose and lose some more.

I’m an advocate of bringing in new veterans to change the leadership style (I was hoping Burish Fiddler would be a part of this) while integrating young talent as well. You go full-scale young with a team like this and all you do is turn into Edmonton or Columbus.

Getting goals is where the system fails.
You can only get so far shooting the puck in from the center line every God damn time when there are options to gain the zone and create opportunities while their forwards are still chasing.

Every defenseman on earth knows to stop the pass on a 2 on 1. That’s just poor defense and not NHL caliber. They do need to spend some money, but they should still be able to develop SOMEONE.

He had no business being up as a rookie
He succeeded with Zubov because Zubov covered up his mistakes. But when the Russian went down, then Niskanen was exposed, and every mistake he made chipped away at his confidence.
He needed to be sent down then, but the Stars D was racked with injuries and they couldn’t get away with it. But the longer he was in the NHL, the more he got into his own head to the point where he couldn’t even keep a puck in at the blue line.
He had plenty of problems all on his lonesome. But they were compounded by the being up as a rookie.

I absolutely understand that feeling
I just think if you’re going to do something, it should have some discernible goal. Trading people for low-round picks and mediocre prospects just says “moving the chairs on the titanic” to me.

I completely agree.
Heart is just something to say. It’s not about that….there are issues with system, and energy at times….but not heart. That’s just something to say I think.

I just think those terms are too loaded.
I don’t know that they, for 60 minutes a night, have the stomach for the fight as a group anymore. I think they’re close to emotionally done.

It’s great sometimes, but then they start watching too often.

Not so sure about that...
He wants them in position, but the positions are not that static. Its sort of a zone style coverage. The problem is that if a player is on one side of his “zone” and is not moving his feet, it is easy for some to skate through his zone before he can get moving.
They are offensively.
Healtey is the best offensive player on the ice.

I never got a look at what the penalty was, though, because the Minnesota feed had to show me every hit in the game. So I wasn’t sure if it was a high stick or what until I heard R&R on my delayed radio feed.

this season because we have bare bones he’s had a chance to prove he’s more than that. It’s plain he isn’t so when we eventually upgrade our offence put him back
They need to actually use a third checking line

He does a lot of things well, particularly in his own end
He does have a bad habit of getting overly worked up, but his fairly “put himself out there” nature makes him a target for both love and criticism.
If you want to say he’s part of the problem, sure. But so is everyone else at this point.
