Week of 1/16 OT Thread - All Your Comments Are Belong To Us

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a day to honor the reverend who led the nonviolent Civil Rights Movement in the mid to late 1960s in the United States. He gave one of the most famous speeches in American History during this time: I Have a Dream. Most of us have this day off, while our friends overseas don't.

And now for something completely different.

So, the Golden Globes were on last night (I did not watch, as I decided supporting my school's basketball team was a good idea. It was hard to watch.). Apparently The Descendants won Best Drama. I have not seen it yet. For those of you who have, is it deserving of the Best Drama Award? Should I go see it?

Continuing with movies, what film do you think deserves the Oscar for Best Picture? Although it's not on the list of nominees for Best Drama, my vote for that award, if I was dignified enough to have one, would be The Artist. It did win the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical, so we'll see what the Academy will do with this film. If you haven't seen it, it's worth going to.

Are you glad that Tebowmania will hopefully end? Seriously, I cheered for Tom Brady during that game because I was so sick of the overcoverage of him. Tom freaking Brady. (I respect him, but I dislike the Patriots)

no you're not.

I hate the movie for one reason alone: At the church, the clock sounds, and he has 1 hour before they rob the place. He runs home, draws an elaborate plan on the house (in colored crayons, no less), probably takes an inventory of what’s around the house, sets every single trap, and THEN manages to cook himself dinner. In one hour.

In real life, they’d bust in on him while he was still coloring, and slit his throat.

Just sayin.

if you've read all the books, just be prepared for the whole "interpretations" thing we talked about last week.

There’s no way they could fit all of the book detail into the films. And they sacrificed a lot of “minor” things from the books that wound up playing a huge part in the 6th and 7th. They just didn’t know it until it was too late. And a ton of the sub characters get lost too. About the only ones you get to know are Fred and George. Anyone less than that, and you won’t hear much from them throughout the films.

But I still like them for what they are. And they give a good visual representation of the books.

Yeah I was watching Part 1 of HP7

They skipped over a ton of stuff and changed some significant details of the wedding scene. But, given the way they presented it in the film, they got away with that change in the wedding scene.
Even though the book is split into two movies, it’s obvious they still have to skim over some important details so the audience will remain interested.

Award shows are usually horrible if you're a real film nut.

The films that should win usually don’t and it’s often because they have to give it to someone that they snubbed in previous years. It’s somewhat arbitrary. This year I can’t really say that I’ve seen any of them but Hollywood hasn’t been putting out a lot of good stuff recently.

The Oscars are the awards that NEVER awarded Alfred Hitchcock for Directing. They consistently snub Christopher Nolan. They did not award Brando or Coppola for the Godfather (When was the last time you watched “Cabaret”? Because that’s the film that beat it in both categories), Orson Wells for freakin’ Citizen Kane should have won about five different categories including Picture and Director (it won only for best screenplay).

Generally I have trouble watching most award shows because of stuff like this.

Psycho lost out to The Apartment.
VERTIGO wasn’t nominated for Picture, Director, Cinematography or Actor

The problem with Citizen Kane was that it was up against Casablanca in the year after World War II started.

As good of a movie as it is, do you think that it didn’t get some votes because it was a movie (at least partly) about people standing up to the evil Nazis? Under any other circumstances, I think Citizen Kane wins.

Just like if everyone hadn’t been so impressed with the behemoth that was Titanic, LA Confidential wins (or if it had come out in a different year). As much as I love Titanic, LA Confidential is definitely the better movie. And I love Russell Crowe (and I thought it was a travesty that he didn’t win Best Actor for A Beautiful Mind – as much as I like Denzil Washington, Training Day did not impress me). And he wasn’t even nominated for Master and Commander.

Sometimes, the Oscars get it right. But it seems like there are too many head-scratching, WTF choices, going back to the beginning in the 1930s.

That's one of the things I love about Crowe, how he did so well in such varied roles.

In four years, he was in LA Confidential, The Insider, Gladiator, and then A Beautiful Mind. Particularly The Insider. I lived in Kentucky when the events depicted in the movie took place, so I was pretty familiar with the story and the participants. I really didn’t think he could pull that role off. That movie, even more than LA Confidential, is what really made me a fan of his.

That was mainly my point.

It’s as arbitrary as anything else and they don’t get it right on many many occasions. Quite frankly, I think the Dark Knight should have won Best Picture in 2009. I love Danny Boyle but I didn’t think Slumdog was better than Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight. It was certainly better than everything else in the best picture field and it wasn’t even nominated. It’s the same mentality that kept Hitchcock from winning. Even if a movie has considerable depth and brilliant performances, if it is deemed “too entertaining,” it’s then not considered worthy of the film academy’s highest honor.

And....COMIC BOOK MOVIE. Too low-brow for the Academy, even if they did unbend enough to reward Heath Ledger for his brilliance in that movie.

When I heard Heath Ledger was cast, the last thing I had seen him in was Casanova, so my response was “You’ve got to be joking!”. Everyone knew that the Joker was going to make or break that movie. In the end, if I hadn’t known who was playing the Joker, I would never have guessed it was the same actor from Ten Things I Hate About You, A Knight’s Tale and Casanova. And the thing was that he was SO brilliant that it wasn’t entirely a sympathy vote when he won.

George Lucas is retiring from film making.
“Why would I make any more [‘Star Wars’ movies] when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?” Lucas inquired. Besides, he says of the criticism he’s received from fans of the franchise, “I think there are a lot more important things in the world.”

he did say he would come back for an indiana jones 5.

but that’s it.

(And for people complaining about Crystal Skull, you DO realize it’s just as hockey as the original three, right?)

Don't make me yell at you again Trev!!!

If it was hockey that would be awesome, but simple hokeyness was only one of a myriad of reasons why Crystal Skull was an abomination to the franchise and an affront to good storytelling. Shia LePoof was an disaster. The story was undeveloped and disjointed. There was no character depth of any kind. To your point though, I would argue that there is nothing comparable in the first three films to LePoof being taught by monkeys to swing on vines through the jungle. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING COMPARABLE. Just like Kathy Bates in About Schmidt, if I could unsee it, I would in a heartbeat. To anyone who hasn’t seen it…SAVE YOURSELVES! DON’T DO IT!!

really?

How about “You’ve betrayed the stones of shiva….” casting a spell to cause the stones to heat up? Or that knights of the dark ages were able to successfully construct a buzzsaw deathtrap with a never ending power supply that was also motion triggered? Or a floor with no supports whatsoever, yet some of the letters were stable?

It’s all ridiculous fantasy. That’s what makes them enjoyable. Just like comic books turned into film.

DUDE! MONKEYS TEACHING LE POOF HOW TO SWING ON VINES!!!!

Searching for ancient mystical artifacts imbued with the very power of God affords some suspension of belief when it comes to booby traps and cursed magical stones which are the basis of the entire movie (Temple of Doom admittedly being the weaker of the three). If you have no interest in believing the Shankara stones have magical powers for the sake of the film then that’s fine but that is McGuffin none the less. And they were simply sharpened metal disks not buzzsaws, and considering what Egyptians and Romans accomplished with limited technology and the fact that your talking about a knights with access to the power of God, one of which has lived forever in a cave by drinking out of a magical cup, I don’t see the booby traps as being the big sticking point. That’s entirely different from deliberately inserting the campiest of campy scenes where a completely unnecessary character winds up high in a tree, like a moron, and needs a bunch of monkeys to show him how to swing on vines. I love many movies that ask me to suspend belief when it comes to science fiction, mystical and magical devices and plot points. What I can’t excuse is taking a perfectly normal scene and treating the audience like a bunch of five year olds and producing fluff. I will cannot abide that sir.

I never cared for Temple as much as Raiders and Crusade

However, I probably could have forgiven anything in Crusade just to watch Harrison Ford and Sean Connery on screen together.

Raiders to me is the best one.

It doesn’t get much better than the Ark of the Covenant. The opening scene with the boulder, The map floor, buried city, nazis, the tomb of snakes, the final scene. Such a complex and wonderful adventure.

Yep.

Temple was the worst by far. And it was odd that it was the second movie made, yet the first of the 3. I’d go with Raiders too.

As far as Skull goes, I would rate it worse than Temple, but not by much. That’s why I don’t rag on it.

But you guys DO know that the intention of that film was to pass the adventures on to his son, right? Harrison Ford is done with the series. If there’s another, it will star Shia.

We will agree to disagree. Temple had it's good moments much more than Indy 4..

If it wasn’t THE first prequel it was certainly one of the first. Crystal Skull was much worse though IMHO.

Bite your tongue on Shia as Indy. Besides wouldn’t that movie be called “Mutt Jones: Seekers of the Insignificant Storyline”? Gee, I’m gonna be rushing out to see that one.

That being said, I respect Shia as much as I rag on him, for being willing to say this about Indy 4:

“I think the audience is pretty intelligent. I think they know when you’ve made (slop). And I think if you don’t acknowledge it, then why do they trust you the next time you’re promoting a movie…We [Harrison Ford and LaBeouf] had major discussions. He wasn’t happy with it either.”

“You get to monkey-swinging and things like that and you can blame it on the writer and you can blame it on Steven [Spielberg, who directed]. But the actor’s job is to make it come alive and make it work, and I couldn’t do it. So that’s my fault. Simple.”

Spielberg said this:
“I sympathize with people who didn’t like the MacGuffin because I never liked the MacGuffin. George and I had big arguments about the MacGuffin. I didn’t want these things to be either aliens or inter-dimensional beings. But I am loyal to my best friend. When he writes a story he believes in – even if I don’t believe in it – I’m going to shoot the movie the way George envisaged it.”

Even they know it stunk. Probably the only one who doesn’t think it stunk is “the man who can’t be moved”…Lucas.

Harrison Ford was in good spirits and the movie was okay until…

Monkeys and ants came… After that the whole movie is a mess… And Shia is Shi#… Can’t stand him.

I was waiting for an opening to unleash this:

While referencing Lucas’ meddling, here’s what Spielberg said of his own CGI altering of E.T.
"I tried this once and lived to regret it. Not because of fan outrage, but because I was disappointed in myself. I got overly sensitive to [some of the reaction — including parents who had been less than pleased with the guns in the film] to "E.T.," and I thought if technology evolved, [I might go in and change some things]…it was OK for a while, but I realized what I had done was I had robbed people who loved "E.T." of their memories of E.T." The director then took a survey of the audience to see who would like to see the original 1982 E.T. released on Blu-ray, sans the inclusion of the digitally remastered version. When the overwhelming response was in favor of reverting to the film we knew from our collective childhoods (puppet warts and all), Spielberg said simply, "Okay, done."

Also, the following is an amazing anecdote from Spielberg talking to Lucas.
"After [the screening of The Empire Strikes Back] was over, I said, ‘We’ve found our Indiana Jones.’ And George said, ‘Who?’ I said, ‘That guy right there, Han Solo.’ And George said, ‘yeah, he’s a great actor, but he’s identified as this character now in Star Wars.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, but he’s an actor! He’s supposed to identify with different characters.’ George had NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT, but then he said, ‘yeah, that’d be great’."

This is precisely why this man should never ever be in a Director’s chair!

This is why he is a lunatic.

I think way more people are upset with him over his treatment of the original trilogy than they are with the newer movies. Myself, I would gladly forgive him for Jar Jar if he would just give me the original trilogy, unaltered, in a shiny blu-ray format at a very high transfer rate. I think that is more than reasonable.

This is soooo weak.

Look at the timeline. Many of the changes early on were made to the actual movie release or are about as jarring as mouse breaking wind. You mean in 1977 during the actual release they changed one of the lines of audio to reflect a different character (mainly because Biggs was cut from the film entirely)?!?! Inexcusable!! You mean to tell me that in 1981 they added “A New Hope” to the opening text of Star Wars?1?! Oh the horror!! Wait, you mean in 1994 they converted the sound to THX?!?! Those inhumane bastards!!

Then you hit 1997 and all holy hell breaks loose. The Special Editions were the beginning of everyone hating him because those are actually massive changes! It’s completely just incorrect to try and say that Lucas has been changing them for years so none of us should be mad at the end result. The man in his current mental state is a plague on all of humanity. He must be stopped!

I got a slow start on that one the first time i played it through, because I didn’t really know what I was doing very well. I wound up getting stuck in a part, and since i didn’t save in an empty file every single time, I had to start the game over about 30 hours in.

Lesson learned. Take my time on the front end, explore the game and the format itself, and save often.

It's well beyond anything he can do.

Don’t get me wrong I appreciate him putting it together but there’s no way with 16 teams you can have 3 players for each forward position, a Utility, and two IR slots and then be able to still make moves to help your team during the season if guys falter. Especially in net. Drafting well is important in any fantasy league but if you are unable to overcome obstacles by managing the team during the year simply because there’s no real help available in FA then to me the league setup is flawed. Look at all the guys on IR right now across the league. There’s no one left in FA to fill those holes. You can’t change the team makeup mid season so it’s way too late to fix. It’s just a bummer.

Not trying to bash the league at all,

It’s just my opinion. I’m still playing and I’m still trying my darndest to turn it around. It’s just pretty difficult and I don’t think it’s because I suck as a fantasy owner. I just think in the future, like next year, it would be better to structure it a little bit differently.

Unbelievable. He needs to be gone. You just can’t do that and remain a starting kicker in the NFL. That was a chip shot. An automatic. Stover could still kick that in his sleep even at his age. You set that shot up 100 times with no wind just like tonight and Stover makes it 100 times. Un-freakin’-believable.

I noticed a couple this year though that he shanked from short distance but I never imagined in a million years he would miss a 30 yard chip shot in one of the most important games for our club in a decade. I’m hoping we’re exploring other options this off-season. If we can’t make any moves then would seriously consider paying Stover to come out of retirement just for short kicks like that. Just like he did for Indy a couple years back when we let him go (huge mistake).

After all the movie talk above, I got out my Blu-ray of The King's Speech and rewatched it this afternoon

Aside from the fact that we’ve been talking about it here, and I discussed it with a couple of friends at my birthday dinner, the last time I watched it I was sick and fell asleep during the movie. I decided it was time to watch it without falling asleep (I am sick this time too, but the deep hacking cough keeps me from sleeping too long if I do fall asleep). I’ve also done a great job while being sick going through my Netflix instant queue through my Blu-ray player and watching stuff I’ve added the the queue and haven’t gotten around to watching yet. Specially when it’s 3AM and I’m far from asleep because I’m coughing up my lungs again.
