Steve Ott Gets Warning For Lander Hit, No Punishment; Hiller Out Tonight

There are a couple of little notes coming out of Anaheim this afternoon that might be discussion worthy.

The first is that Steve Ott will play tonight and did not receive any supplemental discipline for his hit on Anton Lander Saturday. He was, however, (according to the Twitter account of Mr. Mike Heika), called by the league and given a warning, likely meaning that any further borderline action (or more) on Ott's part this season could be met with significant repercussions. Lander seemed to turn his face into the hit at the last second and we'd bet that was a significant consideration.

The second is that Jonas Hiller was unable to skate this morning. This means that rookie Finn Iiro Tarkki could get his first NHL start, or that Jeff Deslauriers could get the nod. Deslauriers is a name you might know from the annals of Edmonton Oiler goaltenders that didn't quite work out. He last played an NHL game in the 2009-2010 season, spent 2010-2011 in the AHL with the Barons and this season with Anaheim's affiliate: The Syracuse Crunch.

Deslauriers is 6-7-0 with a 3.86 GAA in the American league splitting time with Tarkki this year, who is 9-11-1 with a 2.86 GAA. Evidently the Crunch are not very good.

One final reminder: Tonight's game is on Fox Sports Ocho Fox Sports Southwest Plus, as are eight others. The channel numbers are as follows:

Time Warner Cable - Ch. 960 (requires digital cable box)
Charter Cable - Ch. 300
DirecTV - Ch. 675 (675-1 HD)
Dish Network - Ch. 441 (9579 HD)
U-Verse - Ch. 692 (1692 HD)
FIOS - Ch. 77 (577 HD)

If you have FiOS like me, don't be fooled by the fact that the guide might say "High School Basketball" or something as equally mundane on FSSW+.

Of course, you also didn't list him in the Game Day Preview

so nevermind.

Based on that picture

Deslauriers might be wearing the exact same pads tonight if he plays.

exactly.

they don’t really fit the “youth movement” that the stars are going for.

honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if they really were meeting us in LA...

to play against us. More likely headed East though.

Bouwmeester isn't old

At least not as old as Iggy…

Bouwmeester isn't old, but he isn't exactly worth whatever that giant salary is either.

He has basically been a good stay at home defenseman this year. The Stars need that, but not at that price.

"excused from practice" sounds like they showed up to practice, but then were told not to.

Of course, I have no idea what the case is. I haven’t even seen a source on this.

Just saying that “if” they are being traded, I would think LA would be looking to deal at this point.

no source, just saw it on twitter....

its a total rumor (the trade, not that they were held out or excused or what-not), just something i thought was interesting and we were discussing in the office. so i figured i bring it up here for some fun tuesday water cooler talk

by starshorns on Jan 10, 2012 2:07 PM CST up reply actions

As long as we keep it water cooler talk, it's fun...

but people start taking it so seriously.

I never believe a trade rumor until the team makes it official, or Eklund reports on it.

I'm really surprised Ott wasn't suspended...

After seeing the Jacques suspension video yesterday I thought for sure Ott would be suspended. Jacques didn’t injure his guy either…

The AHLer the Quackers have penciled in

Hasn’t exactly been stellar in the AHL – he’s gut a sub .900 SV%… So… in theory, we should be able to get a few by him tonight…

Carpe diem!

by dmoore44 on Jan 10, 2012 2:59 PM CST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure that

Bachman was also sub .900 SV% in the AHL when we called him up and he didn’t turn out too bad…

by Huw Wales on Jan 10, 2012 3:05 PM CST up reply actions

Fair enough

I just meant that a poor SV percentage in the AHL doesn’t necessarily mean they will let everything in.

by Huw Wales on Jan 10, 2012 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

Bachman has a .940 even strength save percentage. That isn't remotely sustainable.

He’s a solid backup goalie, but if you’re telling me that a particular team is calling up a goalie with a sub 900 sv% from the AHL I’m 99/100 times not going to be impressed.

I'm not saying hes going to be amazing

Just that you can’t just assume they will let everything in. There have been a couple of cases of rookie goalies playing in the NHL for the first time doing well. I just don’t want to tempt anything by assuming we will win because of a rookie goalie.

by Huw Wales on Jan 10, 2012 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not assuming he'll let everything in.

I’m assuming that he’ll be mediocre which is much more likely than not. If you can’t stop pucks in a lesser league there is no real reason to expect you to be able to stop pucks in the higher league. You might, but it’s a very remote possibility.

I agree

I just would prefer not to tempt fate or sound cocky because its a rookie goalie. Mathematically we should be able to deal with him.

You should be confident if Deslouriers is playing.

He sucks. They shouldn’t lose.

I'm not assuming Tarkki or Deslauriesis going to let everything in

But I am assuming that the Ducks forwards don’t play a very tight defensive game (especially with Gabby coaching them), a suspect D-Corps for the Ducks, AND someone not named Hiller or Ellis in net is a recipe for an interesting night…

Carpe diem!

by dmoore44 on Jan 10, 2012 5:05 PM CST up reply actions

I was thinking the same

If he’s going to be tentative about some injury then… that might not be a bad thing compared to someone wanting to make a statement with their big opportunity.

by Brad Gardner on Jan 10, 2012 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

Twitter news seems to be leaning towards Deslauriers getting the start...

But we won’t know until gametime I guess.

Jonas Hiller has been, arguably, the second worst starting goalie in the NHL this season.

Tarkki had a .919 sv% in Finland for the Blues, and now has a .916 sv% in the AHL. Two solid seasons in two professional leagues. Decent chance he won’t be any worse than Hiller has been this year, and if all things are equal I’ll take the rattled vet over the upstart trying to make an impression.

I think it's because Hiller isn't using the matte black mask anymore...

I think that gave him superpowers in years past.

Tarkki is a good goalie.

But he doesn’t have to shine tonight.

Trevor Daley is my cup of tea.

What would you have done if Tarkki started

With Selanne Hagman and Koivu up front?

I think one thing that works for our advantage is that Tarkki doesn't know the opposing team like Hiller does.

HIller is familiar with our shooters, their habits and plays. Tarkki has no clue. But it kinda goes both way – we don’t know Tarkki.

by iHorses on Jan 10, 2012 5:04 PM CST up reply actions

We don't really have to know Tarkki...

As long as we have good net presence and throw EVERYTHING (including the kitchen sink) at him, good things will happen.

Deslauriers has the best name to heckle

Just ask the folks in Cedar Park that tried to make it into a million syllables. Also best goalie fail I’ve ever seen in person. Went out to play the puck and basically assisted on a goal for the Texas Stars last year. Folks around me were amazed..it really WAS “All his fault” that time.

Almost 2 more hours to puck drop AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHH

Getting teased with a division change and then having the rug jerked out really hurts right now.

Game still not showing on FSSW+ on Uverse schedule … though it is showing on FSSW Houston.
