Dallas Stars Sale: Lenders Approve Plan, Sale Expected To Enter Court Soon
Finally, we have some positive movement on the sale of the Dallas Stars.
After months of negotiating with Tom Gaglardi and his bid to purchase the team the lenders involved with the sale have approved a pre-packaged bankruptcy plan that would take the sale through the court system and into a court-approved auction. Per various reports, the court filing could come as early as this week or could happen next week. In any case, the sale process is about to hit the court system -- something we've known was coming for a while now.
As part of this bankruptcy plan, Tom Gaglardi's bid is being used a "stalking horse" bid in order to start the process within the court system. There is a thought that his bid is good enough that other potential buyers wont' be interested in trying to outbid Gaglardi once the sale reaches auction.
However, there are reports that Chuck Greenberg is still very interested in making a push to purchase the team and there are others -- like Doug Miller and Billy Quinn - who could still be interested as well. Part of this process of the sale going to court is that Gaglardi's bid becomes public, allowing interested buyers to determine whether they would be interested in taking on his bid in auction.
Once the court filings are completed, it is thought that a new owner could be in place within 60 days. If there are competing bids, however, that time frame may lengthen. The lenders are looking to pay as little of this year's payroll as possible and are fighting to get this sale completed as soon as possible, perhaps leading to this lengthy negotiating term with Gaglardi as they put together the strongest plan and bid possible.
Once the sale hits court, expect the news cycle of the sale to remain about the same. This isn't like the Texas Rangers sale last year with deadlines being made and drama erupting in the court room. This will likely be just a methodic and slow a process as it has been - although hopefully we'll get more insight into the nature of Gaglardi's bid once the sale is in the court system.

I agree, I know next to nothing on this guy expect what I read here. I really hope that he is the owner we have been needing since Hicks took a dump on the STARS…
I think they had bios of him and Gallacher up at some point.
But it was so long ago, I can’t remember for sure. And I couldn’t find it doing a quick search in the archives. Maybe I’ve lost my mind.
Either way, I’m sure we could all use a refresher on who the potential owners are at some point. Depending on who wants to bid in the courts.

Yeah, we'll put together something like that.
Not a bad idea, considering how long this process has gone on for.

In general Gaglardi was viewed as a good owner though?
I know he has a hockey background. Can’t recall now if general consensus was he would be in position to spend closer to cap and would inject some much needed owner enthusiasm in this thing. Are we all on board with Gaglardi?
Waiting for the day GM Joe has a real budget
I couldn’t imagine a new owner not coming into this situation expecting to spend some money if you know what I mean. The Stars are a money making business when they are winning, so I’m sure he is fully prepared to do what is necessary to make this a winning franchise. Hicks did it when he gave 2 craps and it worked and made him money. Unfortunately, he wrote checks his body couldn’t cash, and started caring less about his sports ventures winning as much as writing them off as a tax break because of the lost revenue. Atleast that’s been my understanding of it.

At this point, any new owner is good news.
There’s no threat of the team leaving…so don’t worry about that. Gaglardi has a bit of a checkered background but he’s also been the one that’s fought through all this b.s. to get his bid off the ground. That’s worth something.

I was thinking that last year we were preferring Gallacher of Gaglardi, but both had goods and bads.
Seeing how long Gaglardi has fought for this though, I definitely support him now.

Less than 1 month!
This is certainly refreshing news by the way! I just ordered some tickets for my son’s 2nd birthday on opening night and for our 3rd annual Family New Year’s Eve game! I can’t wait to get my boy back in the AAC for some STARS HOCKEY!!!
Just wondering
Assuming Gaglardi gets the Dallas Stars, does he also then own the Texas Stars, or would they still be controlled by the Hicks’ boys. Trying to look up all of Hicks’ corporations and subsidiaries gets mind numbing after a while. I think Hicks Holdings LLC is the main corporation. I wouldn’t think it would affect operations in Cedar Park at all, just curious if we would see any changes down here, or if it just ends up business as usual.
That's a good question. I don't think that the Texas Stars are not part of this process.
Hicks Holdings LLC are separate from Hicks Sports Group.

That's what I couldn't figure out.
From what I’ve read, HSG is one of four parts of Hicks Holdings LLC. Some of the other entities are in real estate and equity ventures. So I guess it’s just part of the whole going into bankruptcy. Again, not a member of mensa here, so think I’m content just sitting back and seeing what happens.
The comments on TSN make me laugh
I love how the mention of bankruptcy has all of the lesser informed ‘fans’ shouting relocation and such.
Do the "fans" making the comments think that Gagliardi can buy the team and move it wherever he wants?
That is sad.

Most don't even seem to realise this is a step in the sale!
They see bankruptcy and just assume its the same case as Phoenix.
I'm not sure if it's fans so much as Canadians.
All of the southern franchises are going to die and every Canadian town with a population of 300 or more is going to have their own NHL franchise.
It's sad.
We’re going to have a post up here shortly that clarifies some things.

Hard to understand for NHL-inventing Canadians
For some parts I can understand the confusion of the TSN-readers, when the Article is just stating small facts and doesn’t clarify anything (for example that there is already an offer as a stalking-horse…)
The Dallas Stars are expected to file for bankruptcy. Sources say the purpose is to cleanse assets and ensure all outstanding liabilities are taken care of.
