Summer Movie Reviews

We recently had a fan post about good hockey movies. If you watched a new one, or re-watched an old one, let's hear your review. They don't really need to be hockey movies either.

I recently watched The Rocket. I didn't even know about this movie until the fan post. I must say this has become one of my favorite sports movies. Roy Dupuis was amazing as Maurice Richard. I had no idea there was that kind of racism going on in Canada, and the NHL at the time. Sean Avery plays the biggest goon in the league, playing for the Rangers no less. I'm not trying to give anything away, but I had to rewind his scene several times. The film also stars Vince Lecavalier as Jean Beliveau and Mike Ricci as Elmer Lach. Stephen McHattie was great as Dick Irvin too. Lot's of awesome, and at times brutal, hockey scenes. The Rocket was nominated for 12 Genie Awards (The Canadian Oscars), and won 9. I highly recommend it. I'm giving it 5 out of 5 Stars.

I also recently re-watched Miracle On Ice...the early '80's made for tv movie. Right off the bat you'll notice that Kirk Douglas was waaay better as Herb Brooks than the old guy in this movie. Also there is a lot of goofiness in the old version...but it was the early '80's after all. But it's still a good movie....especially for being a made for tv movie. But then again, Miracle was a Disney movie. So neither one has any R rated language or anything.  One cool thing they did in the old one is use footage from the games, including crowd shots and the commentary. They had some close ups, and some shots from the bench. But mostly they used the original game footage. This movie is a little longer than Miracle, and focuses a little more on the players, where Miracle is pretty much the Herb Brooks story. I'm giving Miracle On ice 3 out of 5, and Miracle gets 4 out of 5 Stars.

Here's a few newer movies I've seen this summer, but won't go into huge detail.....

13 Assassins-I love samurai movies, and this is the best new movie I've seen in a while. Great battle scenes. 4 Stars

The A-Team-This was a lot better than I thought it would be. 3 Stars

Clash Of The Titans-Again, better than I thought it would be. The special effects were slightly better than the old one lol. 2.5 Stars

Tropic Thunder-I finally got to this one. Holy crap that's a funny movie. It mu-mu-made me happay! 4 Stars
