Dallas Stars Free Agency So Far: Most Important Addition

After a very quiet follow up to perhaps the busiest four hours of free agency I've ever seen from the Dallas Stars, we can all sit back and start to contemplate just what all this means for the short and long-term future of the team. I'm still trying to find a way to accurate analyze and write just how cunning Joe Nieuwendyk was on Friday with the contracts he awarded; nearly every player -- with the exception of Fiddler -- has something to prove and isn't being overpaid to prove it.

Adam Pardy was a head scratcher for some, especially with his contract, but apparently he's a player that the Stars have had an eye on for a while now. This is becoming a running theme with Nieuwendyk and the Stars; they don't just jump at anyone and they have shown that they'll find a player they like, who they think has potential, and go after them. Alex Goligoski. Matt Fraser. Brenden Dillon.

Hopefully Adam Pardy follows the same path. I know that he was showing signs of improvement this past season and was gaining a reputation as a very decent third pairing defenseman.

We've already discussed at length the job Nieuwendyk did on Friday, but I'm curious to know which player the fans feel was the most important addition. Was it Sheldon Souray, who will provide some much-needed firepower from the point? Michael Ryder, likely to see time on the top line with Mike Ribeiro? Vernon Fiddler, a versatile winger who can play in every situation and does so with physicality and the ability to produce points?

Let's hear what you have to say.

Fiddler.

Just because he will help Ott very much and as much as I like that Ryder move, I was really happy when they made this.

Fiddler for me!

Fiddler-Ott-Burish line of nastiness and general anti-social behaviour.

Do it Gully, do it now.

Damn did we miss Nicklas Grossman
James Neal - 45 points. Alex Goligoski - 46 points. Nieuwendyk lost?

Then who is on your 2nd line with Benn and Eriksson?

For me, I'm inching towards giving Wandell a shot but I wouldn't be surprised to see Vincour there either.

To be honest I’m not sold on Ott going on the second line, I think he should stay in the place where he does his thing best. Being an ultra-pest.

I’d feel safer if we had a line full of evilness to put out against any line at any time, than have someone who isn’t really meant to be the second line centre anchoring our two best players.

…and anyway, who wouldn’t want to see a return of the “grumpy old men” line?

Damn did we miss Nicklas Grossman

Good point.

But I’d like to see Ott having a shot in second line. Because he might prove you wrong, it remains to be seen.

Stars also need to have a great faceoffs guy with as many line as possible.

I think you hit the nail on the head there:
Stars also need to have a great faceoffs guy with as many line as possible.

Joe did say they are going to try to get more out of Otter. AFAIK, two of Friday’s signings were good on the faceoff (Fiddler and Dowell), which gives us 4 now, but they’re all grinders that you’d expect to play on the 3rd/4th line. If one of them can play up, why wouldn’t you do that? Especially if there isnt anyone else banging down the door for that spot.

by Breg on Jul 3, 2011 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Thanks.

Since his new contract, I have been hoping that he will have his shot as a second liner.

I fully expect Ott to play on that 2nd line with Benn and Eriksson.

Only thing I can hope is that Gulutzan (can we call him Gully? I like Gully.) is not anywhere near as bad as Crawford with the random changes of the line combinations for no apparent reason.

He kind of has to or else I don't see the point in signing Fiddler.

Fiddler got my vote too, if only because he should help that awful PK significantly.

by Josh Lile on Jul 3, 2011 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions

The only way Vincour is on the NHL roster is if someone is hurt or traded.

Perhaps he’ll be the 14th forward, but right now you have:

Morrow
Ribeiro
Ryder
Ott
Benn
Eriksson
Fiddler
Dvorak
Wandell
Petersen
Burish
Barch
Dowell

Right now, I can see a fourth line of Dowell, Petersen and Dvorak. And Dowell is on a one-way contract, so he’s not going to be sent down unless Vincour or someone else severely outplays him.

For that final “2nd scratch” spot — and remember this is purely following the hypothetical of there being no injuries — I could see someone else getting that spot while Vincour gets more minutes and development in the AHL. He’s only 20, he needs to play.

I think you're forgetting

That Vincour is somewhere between Fiddler and Dvorak in this chart. Dowell is an a-ok player, but he’s just not going to play over Vincour. Not unless he out of nowhere becomes a legitimate top six forward, which isn’t going to happen. He might play over Petersen or Wandell in the bottom six, but really I see this move as getting another physical part-timer, and one who can actually win a fight this time

When you think about what Joe did with the goalies last year,

with Raycroft having to battle for his spot with the prospects, this isnt that surprising. Joe likes [healthy] competition within the team.

by Breg on Jul 3, 2011 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

why do you think vincour is above dowell?

vincour = 2 pts and some decent looks but he’s 20 and doesn’t need to make the jump yet he wasn’t nearly impressive enough. dowell = a 4th liner who was able to put up 21 points. NONE of our 3rd and 4th liners put up over 20. most of them didn’t make it past 10.

by Henri Muroke on Jul 3, 2011 6:42 AM CDT reply actions

I was deciding between him and Ryder...

Souray very well could be the most important if he can bring the heat from the point like he has been able to in the past. But he is a risk until he proves otherwise. We needed scoring up front really bad after Brad left…so at this point I believe Ryder was the most important.

by coolcolin09 on Jul 3, 2011 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I voted Souray.

I think he’s got the most to prove to the most people…but if he does, he’s got the potential to be the best addition to the team. He can be that #1 or #2 defenseman that we’ve been needing—and we got him on the cheap. Yeah, he definitely has to prove that he’s still capable of playing at that level, and that he’s left the issues with Edmonton in the past. But if he lives up to his potential, for the price, there is no greater value in any of those signings.

by WingnutInStarsCountry on Jul 3, 2011 9:07 AM CDT reply actions

Did you listen to his interview after the signing?

He sounds like a player with a very, very big chip on his shoulder.

Also, Ryder seemed very surprised that Souray was called a “cancer” in the Oiler locker room. Said there were never any issues in Montreal.

Souray

at his best in terms of stats and size WAS Shea Weber. Course even if he’s totally healthy now..you do expect some skill degradation at his age. But if he’s healthy and not ‘done’ physically..dead legs or whatever..then maybe you get 10+ goals 20+ assists out of him. And he can hit. That would be huge.

That isnt a bad thing.

I don’t think anyone, career wise, is going to take Beltre over Chipper Jones. Shea Weber is a special player.

by Josh Lile on Jul 3, 2011 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Well Adrian Beltre is really not what you think he is.

Over the last ten years he’s been extremely durable and he’s sustained a level of production which has been at minimum very serviceable, and at best elite.

That’s not comparable to Souray’s profile, considering how he missed plenty of games even before last season’s shenanigans.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Jul 3, 2011 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Beltre is exactly what I think he is.

Souray is a guy who has had three extremely valuable seasons, and in the rest of his career he’s been a productive player when healthy. Even last year he was productive in the AHL. Thats the Beltre similarity.

Both guys have incredibly high peaks which are significantly higher than their career averages, but throughout their careers they’ve been good guys to have on a roster when healthy. And yeah, Beltre has had significantly less health issues than Souray over their careers. I didn’t argue that they were identical.

by Josh Lile on Jul 3, 2011 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions

For the first six seasons

of his career (1997-2002), it appeared that Souray was a highly mediocre player. He missed the 2002-2003 season.

Since 2003, and minus the lockout season, he’s had two extremely good seasons, two pretty good seasons, two seasons wiped out by injury, and a seasons killed by dodgy circumstance. That’s not all that far off from Beltre’s career profile, but if you include any of his first few seasons, it pretty much removes the comparison.

I suppose it doesn’t matter though – I think Souray, if healthy, can be a decent #2 type for the Stars this season, if the reports about his extra motivation are legitimately true.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Jul 3, 2011 11:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

In his first 6 seasons he put up GVTs of 5.7, 1.8, 3.3, 2.6, and 1.4 (in half a season). That isn’t mediocre. It’s about what you’d expect, collectively, from a league average defender.

by Josh Lile on Jul 4, 2011 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I remember talking even a year and a half ago

when his problems in Edmonton first started why the hell the Stars didn’t take a chance on him on re-entry waivers…but I guess they felt the risk was too big for even half what he was making.

I dont care how the Stars spin it....

Adam Pardy signing is still confusing to me….$2/million a year? That makes him our 3rd highest paid defenseman! He makes more than Goligoski does! We will see how he turns out, but I’m glad it is a 2 year deal.

Still think a trade is coming.

by Gregory Smith on Jul 3, 2011 10:04 AM CDT reply actions

Can't look at it like that

He also makes more than Benn too, but he’s on his entry-level contract. Goligoski will a heck of a lot more than $2 mil, fear not! People don’t need to stress over $2 mil for Pardy..even if it’s too much for him it’s still not much especially with being efficient with the rest of these signings as well.

Im not gonna do that. My point is….$2m a year for a 6th or 7th defenseman, who has never played a full season, or put up more than 10 points. It is an overpayment. Is it a huge overpayment? No, but still overpayment.

No you go look at every single free agent signing in the past 7 years, come back and write me a 15,000 word essay on what each payer brings to their team.

seriously, Antti Miettinen

he wouldn’t be too ridiculously expensive, probably sign for about the same 2.33 mill cap hit that he made last year, but that would be a decent cap floor cushion. He is a right hand shot that can play top 6 and is a bonafied 2 way player. This will allow Ott to stay down on the 3rd line and play the Steve Ott kind of game and keep our team very deep. Lets also hope that Glennie ups his game and is ready for NHL call-ups because his NHL salary of 1.65 million might force the team to use him as a call-up to stay above the floor.

Brad's agent is a dick

With brad giving NYR a bargain, it makes me wonder why exactly he wouldn’t except a trade. He wanted to play in NY so he took the deal when toronto and buffalo would have paid him more. Why not except the trade? I’ll tell you why. His agent is greedy and convinced him to let this go a couple days into free agency at least so they could create a circus and have the canadian news media publicize the Newport Group. He should have accepted a trade to the team he knew he wanted to play with to help out the team that he is leaving. That way he wouldn’t have screwed over buffalo la toronto and calgary who are behind on free agency now. That doesn’t sound like Brad Richards to me.

Yah you do make a solid point about that.

Im sure he would have accepted the trade at the deadline, but there was no point to accept it a week before UFA. It just does not make any sense when he really wanted to see what everyone had to say, its not like he listened to the Rangers and made his decision he took a full day, overnight. He clearly took his time, and some people are bitter that A) He isn’t staying in Dallas, B) That he was lost for nothing

Fiddler

As much as losing Brad hurts our scoring, the Stars biggest weaknesses last year were special teams and faceoffs. I haven’t seen Fiddler play very much, but if he’s as good at faceoffs and penalty killing as everyone says he is, he will be a huge improvement to this club.

You won’t need to put up monster goals if you can actually keep the puck out of your own net.

by LilEagle on Jul 3, 2011 1:39 PM CDT reply actions

Defense wins you games in this league.

Anaheim’s late 3rd period antics in those games last year proved that. Our defense was our achilles heal last year. Fiddler should help with the faceoff issue and now we have better depth at defense with an improved structured system. A legit #2 center would still be nice but until ownership gets settled in, I’m not getting my hopes up.

by RealDealNeal on Jul 3, 2011 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it actually works for both teams

and makes both of them potentially better. Not much better at all, but a little better.

Havlat has some good potential and still put up decent numbers despite not being around that great of offensive forces. He’s a speedy, crafty guy that I think will definitely put up better numbers with one of the better set-up men in the league as his center.

Heatley, on the other hand, could be an upgrade to MIN since. He isn’t the best skater in the world but he has great offensive positioning that could work very nicely with a healthy Bouchard (who is definitely more of a passing winger) and Koivu, who is one of the best two-way centers in the league while also being a good passer and scorer. They should probably benefit Heater as the three will probably compliment each other a bit more as a trio.

Who knows, though. I could end up being dead wrong. However, dealing Heater and his sorry attitude and $2.5M in extra cap hit for a player that should put up similar numbers is a plus for the Sharks regardless.

by GRees on Jul 4, 2011 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions

@Russotrib on Twitter just posted

that Heater and Setoguchi have been talking since the trade and they were talking about how great it would be to play on the same line. That could change things, as it could now be Heater-Koivu-Setoguchi. Who knows how its going to work out.

But in the end I guess who cares, haha. Don’t know why I keep going on about two teams I could care less about.

I'm not sure these signings were ever really about an individual

When you look at our top players last year, they performed. we had 3 guys in the top 25 in league scoring. That group is made up of somewhere around 14 teams. That’s not a bad performance. They weren’t super in the +/-, but they were more positive than negative. The key here is that we should have vastly improved our third and fourth lines as a whole, as well as the overall D-Corp. With this improved depth, we won’t have to worry about getting scored on all the time when the lower lines and pairings are out there. The question will be whether or not we can still score enough, but when ownership gets sorted out and we can (ideally) spend to the cap, we can fix the high caliber problem while already having our depth issues fixed. Most likely, no individual is going to come out of nowhere and blow us away, but at the end of the season we will be able to look back at the job these new guys did as a group and be pleased with it

Or Overpaying for Wisnewski.

second that

Joe could have done a lot to hurt this club with 11.25 million. All things considered there were no stupid signings, good terms and good dollar amounts. May have overpaid dramatically for Pardy and a little bit for Ryder, but still the total dollar amount we spent for what we got was reasonable in such a thin free agency when so many teams were just throwing gross amounts of money away on semi-decent players.

Lines for next year (at least what I'd like)

10-63-ryder (number?)
21-14-vincour/wandell
16-29-fiddler
vincour/wandell-petersen-dowell/dvorak

we all like Vincour, but I think he will start in the minors

Sceviour or Morin will probably be up riding the pine for the stars and Vincour will be getting some valuable minutes w/ the Texas stars. My guess is lines on opening night look something like this
10-63-73
29-14-21
38-23-16
17-Dowell-20
with Barch and Sceviour as scratches.

3rd and 4th lines might be a little interchangable, with the possibility of Burish and Dowell playing together and Dvorak has the possibility of moving up the line-up as well and might get a look with Benn and Eriksson even.

Ott's gonna get the chance to jump up. whether or not he sticks... we'll see. I expect

Morrow-Ribs-Ryder
Benn-Ott-Eriksson
Wandell-Fiddler-Burish
Peterson-Dowell-Dvorak

This keeps Benn on the wing, where the general consensus seems to be that he is more effective, and leaves the Ribs line as the only one that is relatively weak on faceoffs.

D pairings are much harder to determine, in my opinion, especially with Robi still being the only right hander. It also doesn’t help that I don’t have a real good feeling for how Souray performs in his own end, but his overall plus minus seems to say it’s not stellar. I also don’t know what the expectations are for Pardy, so I’d go:

Goose-Robi
Grossman-Souray
Fistric-Daly

I agree with that pretty much

I remember Robi and Goose started together when Goose arrived, then didn’t work well with Grossman because they are both left shots. Razor said on air that they weren’t that great together. Also Grossman needs to play with a right shot or left shot who can play right side. So I’d guess

Grossman-Robi
Goligoski-Souray(hopefully he doesn’t mind playing right)
Fistric/Pardy-Daley

Thei had some problems.

Also because of their size. It was one of them reasons to make sure they were in trouble against some attackers.

But then again, things like this can be fixed during the summer. After camp these players will know themselves better anyway.

Still I think it would be good to see in different lines.

How about Goose – Daley?
I know, they are both small, but if Daley will not be a pointmachine, he could become more like fast defender. That way Goose could have more rights in his game and Daley would make sure that defending side would be okay.

PP Goose- Souray. Other than that, right now would like to see Souray with basic defender, Pardy/Fistric, if he begings to feel good and play great, then these thing can have some new turns.

Might not be a good idea, nut one anyway.

Good times are here and Stars will take what belongs to them. Sooner or Later.
