Who Should Wear The 'A' Now?

Hi, everybody. I've been reading this blog for a year now and finally decided to make my own account here. Late last night, I began thinking about who should be our new alternate captain and wanted to see what you thought. Although I am not quite sure how the alternates are selected or what role(s) they serve, I know that they should be chosen carefully.

With the departure of Brad Richards, we have lost not only our top center, but also one of our alternate captains. Although the void has been filled in terms of the roster spot, the leaders of this team have yet to be announced. I think that it is safe to say that Morrow will still be the Captain. Robidas and Ott will also stay alternates next season in my opinion. While some clubs only have two alternates, it seems to me that the Stars would name a third, if for no other reason but because of the depth of character on this roster. After looking at our roster, I have personally narrowed it down to three names: Mike Ribeiro, Adam Burish, and Loui Eriksson. All of these names bring something different to the role that we could use.

Ribs has been, arguably, our best playmaking center since he came over from Montreal. As good as Brad was with the puck, Ribeiro was a wizard. I actually think that he could have been our best center over Richards except for his apparent aversion to shooting the puck. For all his skill though, Ribeiro is not the strongest in his own zone and it remains to be seen if he can rally a team around him ala Brenden Morrow. He also has a less than stellar reputation in the NHL, from his time in Montreal. He would not be a huge emotional leader like Morrow, but he could potentially be someone to be counted on and who could deliver. His well-known chemistry with the Captain could also be helpful.

Burish has only been here a year but his impact was extraordinary. He became as some put it, the emotional leader of the team. I recall seeing some talk, mostly in jest I believe, of him wearing the C for this year. While that may be a bit of a stretch, as I think that Morrow is an excellent Captain, Adam's impact on the team is no less profound. His injury down the stretch seemed to take the heart right out of the Stars more so than losing Richards, Benn, or Eriksson did. However, Burish will not produce much on the scoresheet. He is very similar in style to Ott, who is already an alternate. Again, he is still relatively new to the team so perhaps they should wait a season before putting even more pressure on him aside from the defensive and pentalty kill specialist he already is.

Loui Eriksson is the third name that I thought of. Loui, as seen yesterday in Brandon Worley's post, is possibly the best player that the Stars have right now. His defensive game is fantastic and to me could earn him a Selke or Lady Byng trophy sometime in the future. Afterall, he's been named the League's Most Underrated Player according to his peers and he finished third behind Martin St. Louis and Nicklas Lidstrom for the Byng. Not too shabby in my opinion. He is very good offensively as well. The downside, however, is that he has been known to be fairly quiet. While avoiding the spotlight does make him hard to remember for the opposition on the ice, can he help inspire this team as well? I think that this career Star has striking similarities to former Star Jere Lehtinen. Both were excellent to way forwards and both were rather quiet. Jere was an alternate in the past (not sure of when exactly) and it might be wise to give Loui a chance to fill the void left by Brad Richards even further. He's my personal choice but what do you guys think?

It will really depend on the atmosphere in the locker room on who gets this pick, if they decide to name another Alternate Captain

You’ve got emotional leaders in Brenden Morrow and Steve Ott. You’ve also got Robidas, who’s the leader on defense.
If you want a vocal leader, go with Adam Burish. If you want a guy who you can depend on to score that big goal, and inspire other people on the team to play to his level, go with Loui.

I'd be okay with Burish

but I think he has to spend more than a year with the team to earn an A over a guy like Eriksson

by KBreezy on Jul 22, 2011 4:38 PM CDT reply actions

My thoughts exactly

Both players are deserving but I think Burish could use just a little more time with the team first.

My feeling

Is that you will see Robidas with the A, as he has been, as it should be…and Ott and Ribeiro rotating.

My opinion

For the 2011-2012 season, I see Ott and Eriksson with the As. I could see Ott and Burish as the alternates the year after that.

I think its going to be Robidas, for sure, and probably Ott or Burish.

I like Ribeiro but his play sometimes can go up and down depending on the competition.

Robidas and Ott already have A's

we’re talking the one that is freed up from the loss of richards

This is a good topic

I think Burish, Eriksson or Benn should get the 3rd A. Or maybe possibly RIbs. Benn will be captain of this team down the line and we might as well start now and put an A on his jersey.

Robidas already wears an A

So I would say Loui, or possible Ribeiro. I like the idea of Jamie Benn wearing it, but I wonder if that would be a bit too much pressure on him.

benn plains and simple

i believe he’s the future captain anyway so why not give your best player a leadership role now. he can learn from the others but still set the example with his performance on the ice and in the locker room.

by the way worst e-news ever...

Hard to argue with that

But even though Eriksson is not boisterous he can still be a quiet, inspiring leader.

give an "A" to benn....

groom him now, why wait? he can handle it, especially with gully coming into grow with the team. seeing as how gully and benn worked together in the calder cup run that year in cedar park, lets get that process underway, even if its on a rotation with otter, caveman (burd), robidas….

if i had to pick two tho, it would be benn and robidas. one from each side of the ice, one vet, one youngin, one worker bee, one skill player (not that benn doesnt work hard, but you get what im sayin…)

helps bridge the gap and the benn/gully combo needs to begin the growth…IMHO

go stars!!

Good Points

I personally want Benn to stay under the radar for another year so that he can school Doughty some more. I’d have added a poll to this, but apparently we have some very hateful trolls frequenting our site.

Hold on, our 2014 stars look like this!

Morrow-C
Benn-A
Eriksson-A
Grossman,Goose-A

This is fun! Try one out hahaha

by sundancekid on Jul 25, 2011 7:26 PM CDT reply actions

Wait, you forgot Benn

Benn might be in the running for an A so they can start easing him into the captain position in a few years. However Eriksson said he wanted to get into more a leadership position during interviews during the NHL Awards in Vegas, so I’m putting on my money on either. It really comes down to how they work in the locker room and how they can deal with media and their skill level.

Well don't forget

It wouldn’t be real smart to have your captain and alternate on the same line “maybe throws out Ribeiro”. Just like this past season when Steve Ott removed the A from his jersey because he was on the same line as Richards. I like the choice of Burish, Another possibility is Daley or Barch if you want to look at years with the team. Or Grossman too. Don’t be suprised also if Souray is in the running pending how his run this season goes.

Now playing his first season with the Dallas Stars as a defenseman #44 STUDLY WONDERBOMB
