You Vote: Top Dallas Stars Prospect
The other day we here at Defending Big D revealed our first ever prospect rankings for the Dallas Stars. It generated some great debate and I thought it would be interesting to see just who might be the top prospect in the Stars system.
Is it Jack Campbell, top pick in the 2010 draft and future cornerstone of the franchise?
Is it Scott Glennie, who is on the verge of breaking out into the NHL and is coming off a career year with the Brandon Wheat Kings?
Perhaps it's Jamieson Oleksiak, newest top draft pick for the Stars and the current scourge of college hockey.
Then there's a few of the later picks who have started to shine. Alex Chiasson is putting together a stellar career and Reilly Smith is an early Hobey Baker favorite for 2011.
There is no right or wrong here, but this should be another good debate to decide just who on the Stars the fans are looking forward to the most.
Side note: Check out the fan confidence poll, which closes on the 29th. It's the highest I've seen it in a good long while. Good to see.

This was much tougher to figure out than I thought.... I tend to agree with what you said in a previous post, B-Dub...
The top 5 are all extremely close.
In the end, I went with Campbell for a few reasons. It’s not because he’s closest to the NHL, or because he is producing a miniscule GAA (which obviously he isn’t). It’s because of the weight that Joe put on him when he drafted him over NHL ready defensemen. “Franchise goalie” were the words used. That’s heavy.
And goalies are the most important position in the game. While we have a great goaltender right now, in another 3 or 4 years we’ll be needing someone to start taking over. If Campbell is what Joe thinks he is, then he’ll begin that process.

Thats why I picked him too....
It seems he has more expectations on him than any other prospect. I think it is a close race between him and Glennie, but scoring wingers are an easier find than franchise goaltenders.

That's exacty why I picked him too.
Well said.

Maybe that's why Woywitka had that puzzled face after that goal....

It seems to me like the $5 million cap increase is going to do more harm than good.
There aren’t a lot of great FAs out there this year, and a lot of teams are going to have to purposefully overspend just to meet the floor.

oops... meant to put this in the other post about FAs
my bad

You're right though
I thought it was great at first because it meant we would have to get some new blood. Unfortunately it only means that everyone wants what’s out there and there ain’t much to go around. It kind of sucks. It’s like the league just mandated raises to all the FAs.

I've been looking forward to Glennie coming to the NHL for quite a long time now
I want to see what he can bring to the team.

I hope that changes this year.

I certainly hope that changes this year
He did have a great season with Brandon last year, without Brayden Schenn.

Brooks Laich re-signed
in Washington, six years $27 million. 4.5 a season…Which means in FA he would have gone for over five mil a year. Holy Schneikey…. Stars are going to have to way overpay to land guys..I don’t think anyone thought He’d go for more than 4.5 even in FA.

With mediocre FAs being so pricey, what are the odds of making some trades?

Oh...we'll be talking about this very soon.
It’s a great point.
The Stars have to spend money…but on who?
My fear is that they’ll be trading away some promising prospects in the process. And I like those guys…

It's either trade prospects or dearly overpay for FAs...
If this raise in the cap had taken place next season, it would have been perfect. We have a CRAPTON of RFAs and UFAs after next season, and THAT is where this money really needs to go. The problem is if we spend it all on mediocre players right now, (like the NHL is requiring us) we could lose some good people after next season.

It depends what you mean by best
Do you mean best 5-10 years from now? There’s simply no way of knowing. Or, do you mean closest to graduating? That’s more a factor of organizational depth than anything
I think it means:
Most Overall Promising & Potential
Like….the Stars could have drafted a center 4th overall, but who needs one more season in the juniors. But he’s so good, he’s immediately the top prospect in the system.
This is a game baseball plays all the time.

Reilly Smith
He’s been doing fantastic and hopefully this season takes another step and dominates on his way to the Hobey Baker.
What...just...happened?
I think Reilly Smith will really surprise a lot of people
he’s got some soft hands and ability to put the puck in the net. i just hope he gets a bit bigger.
just a girl who loves Miami U Redhawks and Dallas Stars.
